Tidal surge in E Anglia & Kent - possibly 2-3 metres

That's the worst possibility but still, it's very flat on the E Anglian coast, a small surge would go quite a long way.

Hope everybody there is ready to go if they have to!

We just had a neighbour at the door to say that DD1's nursery school is likely to be closed tomorrow - but will have to check in the morning.

winds are quite high here but have been all day.

bambi06 · 08/11/2007 20:36

theyre putting up the flood barrier on the thames in london tonight..that says something ..no?

dizzydance · 08/11/2007 20:36

Hi Katymac, WW they are just telling you to keep up with the forecasts and ring the floodline if you are worried. I am more worried about my family that are actually in Gt Yarmouth. We are just keeping up to date with the news ATM. The sea doesn't look to bad at the moment although we are also right near the river Bure.

ShowOfHands · 08/11/2007 20:36

"Tidal River Yare from Thorpe St Andrew to Breydon Water
Status : Severe Flood Warning"

That's where I live. Our house is right on the river. We're inland a bit but looks like we're in trouble.

Shoite.

Katymac · 08/11/2007 20:39

Where are you Dizzy I'm kinda between Rollesby & Acle

fullmoonfiend · 08/11/2007 20:46

blimey. Hope everyone will be ok.

Might be an idea to hunt out house ins forms, important paperwork etc and put them somewhere, erm high..

fullmoonfiend · 08/11/2007 20:47

SoH - I was just thinking about you....will you be ok?/

dizzydance · 08/11/2007 20:52

Katymac I am in Caister on sea

ShowOfHands · 08/11/2007 20:53

Hey fmf my lovely. How goes it? How's you and yours?

I have no idea whether we will be okay. We live in a three storey town house so I'm moving all important stuff upstairs. We live on the first floor mostly but all of our wedding presents are in the garage (we rent, waiting to have our own house so we can unpack them) and our piano is in the dining room (ground floor). How exactly does one carry a piano up the flippin' stairs?

Got no food in.

Katymac · 08/11/2007 20:54

Hiya........so who do we mutually know?

I know the head of Caister First/Primary (?) School

I never shop at Tescos at Caister (I go t o Stalham)

fullmoonfiend · 08/11/2007 20:55

I'm sure it will be ok. I think everyone is so conscious of not being blamed if something does happen and they didn't warn people sufficiently IYKWIM.

Still, kind of glad to hear you have 3 stories...

Katymac · 08/11/2007 20:55

Trying to work out where you are SOH

dizzydance · 08/11/2007 20:56

Do your children go to that school?

Katymac · 08/11/2007 20:58

No the one in Martham

dizzydance · 08/11/2007 20:59

Oh wondered how you knew the head. My ds used to go to that school.

SaintGeorge · 08/11/2007 20:59

Having gone through the floods this summer, can I just offer the following advice, although I hope no one needs it.

Get documents etc together along with a torch, fresh water, any essential medications, basic foodstuffs. Put them upstairs NOW. Prepare a supply of formula feeds if you need them.

Ensure nothing is on the floor. Even if you only get water in under the house, the damp rises through floorboards and carpets incredibly fast. Put anything you can up on higher surfaces, stack on the sofa if you have to.

If you have access to sand bags (bags stuffed full of soil from the garden will do), stack them against air bricks.

If water breaches the house, turn off the electricity at the mains immediately. Lifting any floor coverings and removing skirting boards at this point if possible can stop a lot of damage.

ShowOfHands · 08/11/2007 21:00

I'm in Thorpe St Andrew so not as dire as the coastal warnings but the river's tidal and breaks its banks quite frequently anyway even if there's the slightest surge.

Going to sleep on the balcony and keep an eye on rising water levels. DH's grandma has a narrowboat that's moored at Brundall. Maybe I should move into that for a few days.

fullmoonfiend · 08/11/2007 21:01

Keeping everything crossed for you river-dwellers x

Katymac · 08/11/2007 21:02

Hi Showofhands - I'm just down the A47 from you

Dizzy - I'm in childcare and we discussed the Out of school club that has just opened. Are you a dancer - or is that just you nickname?

dizzydance · 08/11/2007 21:05

Just my nickname. BTW it has just started chucking it down here.

ShowOfHands · 08/11/2007 21:07

Ah the A47, worst A road in the country running from nowhere to precisely nowhere with 73 sets of roadworks at any given time and more often than not a 40mph speed limit.

Was it you who opened a nursery? Am I inventing things? It's highly possible. I have canoes in the garage, might just get them out in anticipation.

Katymac · 08/11/2007 21:07

Oh - just checking DH is a dancer

suedonim · 08/11/2007 21:19

I hope no one is affected by this, it sounds scary.

Fio, I immediately thought of you. If you live where I think you do, I don't ever recall that area flooding and I'm ever so old. Mind you, 1953 is before even my time. Plus you have all the new defences in now - that's the latest of three sea wall since I were a lass!

whomovedmychocolate · 08/11/2007 21:21

I really hope the weathermen have got it wrong this time. sssssssssss

whomovedmychocolate · 08/11/2007 21:22
