Surely I’ve got this wrong? She’s actually allowed back to the UK after joining a terrorist group abroad?

Anyone just a tiny bit worried about what might happen if she does return?

@SonEtLumiere I work in counterterrorism, so I’m innately familiar with the complexity of security. Rendition is not a practical reality for the UK. I have never advocated for leaving her there, if you rtft.

She is not litter, I know it might be easier to suspends one conscience by reducing her to that, but at one time she was a vulnerable youth taken in by an abhorrent ideaology.

why this young woman is being held to such a different standard than the male jihadis that have returned to the UK

In what way is she being treated differently? Some male 'jihaddis' returned & they were arrested. If Begum returned she would be arrested and treated the same. She is wanting special treatment.

Thankfully her return has been halted for now and the Supreme court will get to have its say, after a very long time

@SonEtLumiere You call me a twat for talking about the options that are being considered? Delightful. If you don’t want the government to consider all options, then you advocate for a bad policy making dynamic.

I clearly indicated that I believe she should be brought back as it’s the safest option in terms of lifelong monitoring, and I believe there are viable threats to escape or swap if she is tried elsewhere. Nice try though.

There is no other option than bringing her back and putting her in jail here. Every other option is downright unethical and criminal and we can only get away with them by bullying other, weaker countries.
UK should take responsibility of its terrorists FFS. Why is this so hard to understand?

The ignorance is stunning: we are aware you know, as professionals, that everyone is a cognitive opening away from potential radicalisation. You clearly have no idea of how many hurdles and limitations there are to counterterrorism policy and the framework that ALL options are considered within. Thankfully, we all do our job with absolute attention and care to protect people like you who think so little of us, and call us names.

Dervel · 31/07/2020 22:42

I for one am very grateful for all of those who work sub rosa. If people cannot be convinced on compassionate grounds Begum is a real life resource of someone who was radicalised at an early age. Getting top psychologists involved to interview her and understand her and what happened may give us priceless insight on how to prevent the same happening to other vulnerable young people.

I think she should stay where she is. If and when Syria deports her then a decision can be made about whether she is allowed back here. She has joined an enemy organisation therefore is a threat to British security. It is not the same as other crimes.

Butchyrestingface · 04/08/2020 19:59

She's a terrible person.

She should never see the light of day again.

Lock her up and throw away the key.

Yadi yadi yada. Fine. Great. Whatever. So send her back from whence she came and let them deal with her.

Except in this case, she came from the UK.

She is not Syrian. She has never set foot in Bangladesh. Why the hell should THEY have to deal with OUR mess??? It defies all reason.

ZiggeryZaggy · 05/08/2020 07:29

She was a child. Someone’s daughter and someone’s mother. A mother whose children died. Sad She was not responsible for the Manchester bombing on any other. Just a silly child who had no real idea of what she was getting herself into.

As young Muslim girls who very likely had somewhat restricted and controlled lives, I dare say it was perhaps less a case of diehard religious zealotry, than the romantically-tinged idea of running away to marry a handsome warrior - and all in the name of Allah, which made it not just all right, but positively virtuous.

If anything, I suspect that they’ll either have been even more brainwashed while there, or else the brutal realities of their lives will have made them regret the move bitterly.

But how anyone can tell what is really going on in their heads, I don’t know.
As a U.K. citizen, like it or not, it’s our duty to have her back, and to suck up the hefty costs of surveillance, benefits, and imprisonment, if it comes to that.
