Mosque shooting in Christchurch NZ

Multiple fatalities reported. 300-500 people at Friday prayers when a gunman went in with an automatic weapon shooting for 5-20 minutes (varied witness reports). And another mosque also involved with injuries. Poor Christchurch.

And why was this man not reported by the people he was posting and live streaming to??

Presumably because they were in shock/traumatised rather then evil supporters. I suspect he was showing off to sick supporters though so I'm not convinced.

brizzlemint · 16/03/2019 09:14

If you don't name and inspect/challenge/understand these people, their lives and motives, isn't it a bit like burying your heads in the sand?

Inspect, challenge and try to understand but the names worthy of remembrance are those who were murdered and injured.

LifeIsToughMate · 16/03/2019 09:40

“Presumably because they were in shock/traumatised rather then evil supporters. I suspect he was showing off to sick supporters though so I'm not convinced.”

I can’t get My head around it either

ElliotBoy · 16/03/2019 09:56

I am in NZ and today I spoke with a Muslim colleague. They'd been contacted by officials and advised to stay home because more attacks are expected.
It feels surreal, as though we have been catapulted out of innocence headlong into horror.

gettingtherequickly · 16/03/2019 10:20

Absolutely sickened. On my Facebook feed there is a comment under a news report about this and links to Rotherham South Yorkshire and amongst the comments is someone saying "buy this man a pint".

Far right radicalisation is a huge problem globally.

Elllllle · 16/03/2019 10:41

brizzle I feel like it is a bit naive to think you can fully understand without naming and knowing. Also a bit gimmicky - I dislike campaigns like that generally as they distract from the real issues? I'm very glad his picture and live feed have been removed generally however.

Colourpencils · 16/03/2019 10:51

@persimmon stunned that you didn't think it made mainstream news?? There was rolling coverage literally ALL DAY on BBC1 news. R4 discussing it for a very good part of the Today programme - are you living under a rock Hmm

GrouchyKiwi · 16/03/2019 11:17

Maybe Persimmon isn't in the UK?

Colourpencils · 16/03/2019 11:25

True but we are not in NZ are we and saturation coverage here - quite rightly might I add.

Colourpencils · 16/03/2019 11:25

I'm in UK obvs

Persimmonn · 16/03/2019 16:07

Sorry, I might be living under a rock. I didn’t have the tv on all day and was only reading news headlines sporadically, and it wasn’t top headline on my google search.

Colourpencils · 16/03/2019 19:04
Hmm
FenceFuckery · 16/03/2019 19:29

I’m in NZ and you can’t move for coverage - quite rightly. Two main tv channels went straight to breaking news on Friday and dropped all regular programming, and ads, for the rest of the day. TV3 have pulled advertising from all News shows for the rest of the weekend.

We are also working through removing all advertising spots from ‘inappropriate’ clients for the next few days across all platforms.

cdtaylornats · 17/03/2019 09:49

Facebook says it took down 1.25 million copies of the stream.

As usual knee jerk politicians are demanding Facebook "does something".

What I wonder? How is Facebook to know if it is live video or a film? Should it censor news reports?

brizzlemint · 17/03/2019 14:53

As usual knee jerk politicians are demanding Facebook "does something".

The bandwagon is usually the right place for politicians to choose to be as far as many voters are concerned.

LifeIsToughMate · 17/03/2019 15:05

I’m just so depressed over how the impact of this horrific event is diminishing before any real change has happened...

ThisIsNotMyRealName1 · 17/03/2019 18:43

LifeIsToughMate - police were at the first mosque within six minutes of the first 111 call, within 30 minutes they had the POS in custody.

ElliotBoy · 17/03/2019 19:24

Lifeistough I'm unsure what you mean. Are you in the UK?

Here in NZ it feels as though we're just beginning to comprehend the enormity of what has happened.

This is the beginning and I am confident, given the strength and utter integrity of our Prime Minister, that big changes will be asked, and big changes will come about.

ElliotBoy · 17/03/2019 19:25
  • big questions
PrivateIsles · 17/03/2019 19:33

Elliot I think Jacinda is doing such an amazing job, and she certainly seems to be speaking very decisively about what actions will be taken. We were over in NZ in the run up to the last election and I remember thinking it would be great if she were elected, but it seemed unlikely then, I can't remember if that's really how it was or just how it was portrayed in the media.

NZ is a country so dear to my heart, my DH is from there and we lived there for many years, so to see this happen there is really devastating.

There was an academic from Massey on BBC news saying that basically, "these days" with social media, these things can happen anywhere in the world... but that it could be in NZ is very difficult to comprehend.

Tomtontom · 17/03/2019 19:33

Coverage has greatly diminished in the UK. Many people have become cold to terrorism, if it doesn't affect them (or suit their rhetoric) they turn a blind eye.

There's also an issue that many don't realise the scale of the attack relative to NZ's population.

It saddens me that the deaths of so many has become normal, just another news story.

LifeIsToughMate · 17/03/2019 20:03

Elliot I think New Zealand is doing a great job. I’m in the UK yes.

I just feel convinced that this is a global issue that needs global change. The attacker isn’t alone and wasn’t acting alone, he stated he got his blessings from certain group leaders.. I feel this is going to start a huge ripple effect of islamophobic terror attacks on places of worship.

I really was expecting more discussions on TV programs on how to combat hate speech and islamophobia.

Thisisnot I heard it took 37 minutes before he got caught !

ElliotBoy · 17/03/2019 20:10

OK thanks for explaining.
Yes I understand it may not be of great interest to news outlets outside of NZ other than the oh look what just happened. I am a journalist, I get it.

It's so raw and painful here. Personally my faith is in sterling leadership and the general goodwill of New Zealanders.

ThisIsNotMyRealName1 · 17/03/2019 20:39

I don't understand LifeIsTough - is 30 or 37 minutes not quick enough for you? At the time he was taken into custody he was mobile, ie driving a vehicle in the streets of Chch. It's not like on TV here, we don't have street cams on every corner.

Our first responders, all of them, have done very good work in the worst situation, as have many "Joe Public" folk as well.

ThisIsNotMyRealName1 · 17/03/2019 20:42

Here in NZ there is no diminishing going on; if anything it's becoming more and more evident how every life in our country has now changed.
