Mosque shooting in Christchurch NZ

crabb · 15/03/2019 03:32

Multiple fatalities reported. 300-500 people at Friday prayers when a gunman went in with an automatic weapon shooting for 5-20 minutes (varied witness reports). And another mosque also involved with injuries. Poor Christchurch.

The attack didn’t make mainstream news,

WHAT?! It's been all over the world news since early morning! I woke up with it.

So sad.....

White power and Neo-Nazism has shown itself in Australasia today. He had contact with Anders Breivik apparently.

bet he's an Incel too

Nowhere is safe.

My heart goes out to everyone affected.

Bloodybridget · 15/03/2019 22:53

I don't understand what you mean, it didn't make mainstream news, Persimmonn? It was the main story on all the television news programmes I saw this evening and the first item on every radio news broadcast. Sorry I haven't read the whole thread so maybe you are talking about something else?

brizzlemint · 15/03/2019 22:56

It's been on the news since I woke up in the night when it was still an ongoing act of terrorism so I've no idea what you mean Persimmonn - I was awake the rest of the night following it.

StealthPolarBear · 15/03/2019 23:11

I've just seen the first few seconds of the sodding video. Those people must have been twrridied

youngestisapsycho · 15/03/2019 23:13

I cant seem to find full details anywhere of the shooting on the other mosque... did the guy Brenton Tarrant do the shooting at both Mosques? And why is he the only one in court... who were the other 2 men and the woman who were arrested? It’s all so sad and tragic 🙁 My DH is from NZ. He can’t believe that something like this has happened there.

StealthPolarBear · 15/03/2019 23:14

2 mosques?!
I thought the same when they named the person, who were the others

MadCatEnthusiast · 15/03/2019 23:23

I think the reason Tarrant was named was because he posted the livestream from his account? He did the two mosques it seems but none of the others have been named or anything.

It happened in Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Mosque.

AnyWalls · 15/03/2019 23:31

Something that has been on my mind - was it the same shooter in both places? News reports state them as being 3.5 miles apart. Did he manage to go from one to the other or were there two shooters?

AnyWalls · 15/03/2019 23:32

Oh sorry, crossed posts here.

MadCatEnthusiast · 15/03/2019 23:35

He's the main one. 3 more are in custody currently but I agree, he can't have done it by himself no matter how fast he drove without being caught

AnneOfCleanTables · 16/03/2019 00:19

One of the newspapers showed a breakdown that said the same terrorist did both. He drove from one to the other.

youngestisapsycho · 16/03/2019 00:20

Also, wasn’t there bombs found in 2 cars?

brizzlemint · 16/03/2019 00:25

Please can we do no notoriety and not name the terrorist?

MadCatEnthusiast · 16/03/2019 00:28

Yep, car bombs were found too.

Here are live updates www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2019/03/christchurch-terror-attack-saturday-live-updates.html

As ever, Donald Trump is minimising the amount of white nationalism

brizzlemint · 16/03/2019 00:33

The white nationalism that's he partly responsible for?

powershowerforanhour · 16/03/2019 00:35

Scumbag probably pleased with the number of human beings he killed. How soldierly...mowing down people who are barefoot and at prayer.

MadCatEnthusiast · 16/03/2019 00:40

He’s definitely not regretting it if he’s showing supremacist hand signs in court

dontevenblink · 16/03/2019 01:19

The police commissioner here has just said this: (taken from Stuff NZ news website)

"Brenton Tarrant has been remanded to the High Court for the April 5, when he will face charges as the result of the current investigation. He currently faces one charge of murder but is likely to face more.

Bush is joined by representatives from the agencies working on the ground including: Victim's Support, City Council, Civil Defence, Fire and Emergency, and the Defence Force.

Bush says the intervention of the public during the attack may well have saved further lives. He thanked them for their bravery.

Bush notes that the ramming-car arrest of Tarrant was "non-compliant" and officers put themselves in danger given the IEDs on the car. He has thanked all officers involved for their bravery.

Bush says the two people arrested but not yet charged were arrested at a cordon. Bush said police were still working to ascertain whether there was any connection between this "couple" and the attack.

Another member of the public near the scene with a firearm has been released.

Police representatives responded to criticism concerning the timing of the police response. Bush said the arrest took 36 minutes from the first emergency call"

dontevenblink · 16/03/2019 04:11

I don't live in Christchurch anymore, but in a small town on the North Island, but just seen that our local hospital has been put on lockdown due to a threat 😕 They havent released anymore info though. DH drove past about an hour ago and said there were police everywhere. What is going on with the world?? Our small local mosque had police outside last night, and is absolutely covered in flowers today.

MaitlandGirl · 16/03/2019 05:27

We’re in NSW and have been watching the news coverage and it’s horrendous. What ever happened to a place of worship being a safe place?

There an interesting piece in the Sydney Morning Herald today, entitles “Broken white men and the racist media that fuels their terrorism”. The media has to change, but at this stage I’m not sure if it’s possible or if it’s all gone too far.

crabb · 16/03/2019 05:52

I’m in NSW too @MaitlandGirl, and was home yesterday, so watched the rolling coverage on ABC all afternoon in horror. The thing that got me was the vulnerability of people praying in a mosque, kneeling, no shoes. Not expecting anything but the sermon. And then that. No words.

I too am impressed at How Jacinda Ardern has handled this situation. I just heard on radio 4 her emphatic statement that "NZ's gun laws WILL change" and in my mind I contrasted it with Trump's reaction to all the mass shootings in the US : how he basically couldn't give a shit, and his enslavement to the NRA. I think she has pulled the country together really effectively and demonstrated a very meaningful combination of emotion and mettle.

What is Zuckerberg saying about the fact that his beloved child FB is the host of the terrorist's footage and manifesto? clearly it is not fit for purpose.

Any comment from Yaxley-Lennon on this vile white supremacist terrorist act? or Hopkins?

Elllllle · 16/03/2019 08:53

If you don't name and inspect/challenge/understand these people, their lives and motives, isn't it a bit like burying your heads in the sand?

LifeIsToughMate · 16/03/2019 08:56

I don’t live in Christchurch, but I do feel extremely emotional about this.

As a Muslim it feels really violating that this would happen in a place of worship.

I just am very confused as to why was the victims sooo exposed like this. Why did it take sooooo long for police to arrive ?? Why wasn’t there police in the first place in such a crowded gathering. And why was this man not reported by the people he was posting and live streaming to??

Was this preventable and is this a result of complacency?

I’m not blaming anyone I’m just trying to think whether this could be preventable in the future and Whether we should be campaigning for some changes like :

1- change in arm laws
2- tighter security in mosques during busy hours
3- that those who knew of this attack and didn’t report (over social media) he watched... as they obviously are cold blooded...

I am just struggling to get my head around how comfident he was in what he was doing.
