Mosque shooting in Christchurch NZ

Multiple fatalities reported. 300-500 people at Friday prayers when a gunman went in with an automatic weapon shooting for 5-20 minutes (varied witness reports). And another mosque also involved with injuries. Poor Christchurch.

Yep lost exactly, this just doesn't happen here. That's what they were saying on the news, people moved here because they thought NZ was safe for their families, and then they get caught in this.

crabb · 15/03/2019 06:05

The Australian connection seems to be confirmed. PM Scott Morrison confirmed it while not naming names at this point, although his name is out there already.

Kia kaha Christchurch. Arohanui ❤️

40 dead (so far). Many more seriously injured, including children.

If it was going to be anywhere over here, it would be Christchurch. Auckland is so multicultural immigrants are pretty much the norm, Dunedin is mostly either families who have lived there generations or students, Wellington is a combination of the two. Christchurch has a huge immigrant population and a huge white-elite population, tensions are high there.

Dreadful news to be waking up to.

Does anyone know if that is a final or a provisional number of fatalities?

One extra bit of nastiness is that (it seems) one shooter was streaming what he was doing. Footage has been rapidly taken down by everywhere with any standards at all, but it may still be discoverable online. (I don't think a DC would find it by accident, but I thought people might want to be aware.

crabb · 15/03/2019 07:19

The 4 in custody is now down to 3. The police commissioner is due to give another press statement, maybe there will be more information then.

I feel sick. My country. I don't have any words.

brizzlemint · 15/03/2019 07:32

If it was going to be anywhere over here, it would be Christchurch.

I was thinking that, I have immigrant friends in Christchurch and they emailed saying much the same Sad

Pieceofpurplesky · 15/03/2019 07:37

Terrorist not shooter.
Awful news to wake to. What a world we live in.

PrivateIsles · 15/03/2019 07:39

Oh beautiful Christchurch Sad
This is just unspeakably awful. After all they have been through already - as a PP said, not that long ago either. We have not long come back from our regular trip to NZ to see my DH's family, it's just the last place you dream anything like this would happen.

Jacinda had it so right they in her speech: "they are us". Kia Kaha Christchurch.

GrouchyKiwi · 15/03/2019 07:50

My cousin just shared a drawing of two women hugging, with the words "You should have been safe here." They should.

Zoflorabore · 15/03/2019 07:56

I've been up most of the night and the death toll initially was "multiple" then 27 and then 40. Sadly I expect it will rise :(

Sanguineclamp · 15/03/2019 07:57

I had the same thoughtCurlyWurly. What sort of person could sit down and plan such a hideous act together? Utterly sickening.

AuntieStella · 15/03/2019 08:05

'Terrorist not shooter'

Both.

NZ govt say this murder rampage is being treated as a violent terrorist incident.

What happened was a mass shooting, so 'shooter' is also an accurate term for this kind of murderer. Especially as the footage i was mentioning when I used the more specific term, is of the shooting, not of the placing of the bombs (or any other part of the criminal attacks).

My intention was not to minimise.

And there is now a greater mention on the British news of the existence of the live-streamed footage.

AuntieStella · 15/03/2019 08:06

Oh fuck, death toll now 49

And about 40 hospitalised casualties

IceRebel · 15/03/2019 08:07

Total number who have sadly lost their lives is now 49 Sad Such a horrific attack.

ColeHawlins · 15/03/2019 08:15

Migrants and refugees have chosen to make New Zealand their home and it is their home. For the person who perpetuated this violence it is not."

It's a nice sentiment, but she's basically saying "racist terrorists aren't welcome here" which is a) the minimum she should say anyway, and b) a bit ineffectual in the aftermath of forty murders.

littlebillie · 15/03/2019 08:16

Those poor souls attacked in a holy place. RIP and peace be with you New Zealand

These hate agendas needs to be stopped on the platforms. This was summed up on Twitter about the rise of hate

"The victims are not just Muslims, but also Jews, immigrants, refugees, Blacks, Sikhs, Latinos & women (they really hate feminists). It's a zero sum absolutism. No grey area. Just like ISIS. These groups are rising in the US & Europe. They have mainstream elected messenger
ay attention. Take this extremist ideology & terror threat seriously. Be wary of politicians, academics & media heads who give it a platform and spout it under the guise of "free speech" and fighting "political correctness." Look out for each other. Love each other. "

ColeHawlins · 15/03/2019 08:20

Do the security agencies of Aus and NZ cooperate?

Maybe we need a new global agency. It seems nowhere is safe.

Sandsnake · 15/03/2019 08:29

Bastards. Bastards. Bastards.

They probably see themselves as some sort of heroic warrior figures, yet they’ve gone and murdered a bunch of unarmed civilians at prayer. Fucking cowards.

Lots of love to all affected and to the Kiwis reading this. Must be horribly shocking for you Flowers

GrouchyKiwi · 15/03/2019 08:29

NZ's security agencies are in a group of five. I'm not certain what they all are but I'm pretty sure that Australia, the UK and the US are a part of it.

GrouchyKiwi · 15/03/2019 08:30

Maybe Canada is the fifth.

GrouchyKiwi · 15/03/2019 08:31

Ah yes. Here's the Wikipedia article.

ColeHawlins · 15/03/2019 08:35

Thanks. So that's quite a lot of cooperation already.

It's just so awful that anyone, ever, slips through the net and does such evil things.

dontevenblink · 15/03/2019 08:43

As well as those killed and injured, my heart goes out to those first responders who went through so much in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake, especially with the ctv building, and now they are going through this. The staff at Christchurch hospital are amazing, my dc were born there and I have several friends who are nurses there, and my heart goes out to them tonight. Sending aroha. Kia kaha Christchurch.
