story here

Poor little girl. It says he's been sectioned, shame he couldn't have gotten help sooner...

You quite clearly know nothing about either this case in particular or mental illness in general. So why make these utterly ridiculous statements?

I've been feckin sectioned before now. Thankfully I only tried topping myself.

I don't want to give him a free pass (and I'm hoping than when he's in his right mind he's going to be utterly devastated by what he's done) but you don't manage to 'get yourself sectioned'. You don't connive to lose your temper with your baby girl and then when the cops arrive go 'I'm mad as a box of frogs me, officer, put me in the mental hospital'

bobbysmum, you don't know what you're talking about.

bobbysmum, you talk a load of rubbish

some criminals may claim insanity , some mentally ill people do things, that in their right minds they wouldn't dream of doing. The two are completely different.

bobbysmum07 · 06/06/2007 19:46

"You don't connive to lose your temper with your baby girl and then when the cops arrive go 'I'm mad as a box of frogs me, officer, put me in the mental hospital'"

You must be joking. People do this all the time.

You're being sectioned for whatever happened in your life has nothing to do with this.

Bobbysmum, you don't 'get yourself sectioned'. That's the frigging point.

Yeah. That's what most murderers claim. Well, according to my dad who's a detective with 30 years on the job.

tissy · 06/06/2007 19:49

yes it does, but I can see there's no point arguing. Mental illness is in many ways far more devastating to the sufferer and his/ her family than physical illness. It can and frequently does make people behave completely out of character. Your attitude is one of the reasons why people with this sort of problem fail to seek help; they are afraid of being branded "mental"

bobbysmum07 · 06/06/2007 19:50

Course you don't get yourself sectioned. You just have to convince someone you need to be.

tissy · 06/06/2007 19:52

since when has a detective been an expert on mental illness? I'm not surprised that murderers frequently try it on, but that is why we have courts and expert witnesses. If we relied on the police to diagnose mental illness, we would be far worse off!

lisad123 · 06/06/2007 19:52

But he was sectioned when the police attended the house, not after he had spoken to solictor.
Mental illness is hard to understand and very hard to deal with. Im sure the mental health proffessionals assessing him have seen enough fakers to know if he is ill.
Poor girl

tiredemma · 06/06/2007 19:52

Bobbysmum- im actually speechless at your attempt to try and understand mental illness.

You cannot even try to understand what it is like for say, someone suffering from 'command schizophrenia'. I met a woman recently who suffered this - she too killed her young baby as voices told her the baby was going to kill her if she didnt kill it first.

Try and do some research if you are going to suggest such things, some people unfortunatly suffer from the most horrendous mental illnesses.

I can imagine a lot of criminals try and claim insanity but think the whole point is that this was totally out of character for this man, who had - apparently- been a lovng father up until that point and this was totally out of the blue.

tissy · 06/06/2007 19:53

you have to "convince" two people, one of whom must be a doctor, and both of whom MUST have considerable experience in mental health. It's not that easy.

bobbysmum07 · 06/06/2007 19:54

So this 'command schizophrenia' just suddenly came on him, did it? With no prior warning or history?

Give me a break.

yeah, and because he's one of those 'selfish-rich' he's bound to be in cahoots with a good lawyer who also happens to be a psychiatrist and can get the wheels moving.

The fact that your Dad's been a detective for 30 years makes you an authority on mental health issues, does it?
