For those of you who are interested - and don't want any arguing - the news update according to Sky

  • police are now looking for a man seen in a white van
  • they have an e-fit of him
  • also want to interview an american who lives locally who owns a white van and hasn't been seen for the last few days
  • reward of £1.5M has been offered by the News of the World

Pinkchick - just wanted to say I thought your post was brave and hope this isn't too painful for you re: bringing back bad memories.

Haven't really joined in any of the Madeleine threads and I'm not normally a 'rubber necker' but this has really got to me and I just want to wake up in the morning or come home from work and find that she's been found and is OK.

Whoooosh · 15/05/2007 21:27

Wannabe mentioned the press had said this-again I am sure pure speculation but what do we know?

toomuchtodo · 15/05/2007 21:27

agree with wanna's post

ScaryHairy · 15/05/2007 21:28

Wannabe is not "sticking up" for Robert Murat. She is sticking up for the main principle underlying decent systems of justice - innocent until proven guilty - and she is right.

You have convicted Robert Murat on the basis of speculation and rumour. I don't believe for a second that the Portuguese police have said what they found, if anything, on his computer - that is simply not how they operate.

The police might - in due course - find the evidence to justify charging him but for the moment they clearly have not. The last time I looked, being deemed creepy, having a glass eye and being a bit too helpful did not mean you deserved to have your life ruined.

Wordsmith · 15/05/2007 21:28

Trial by Mumsnet. I don't know where you're all getting this information from - or is it just speculation? Do you really care that these are real people you're discussing? Or do you just enjoy being tricoteuses? Jeez.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 15/05/2007 21:28

erm no i didn't - quietmouse mentioned it but think that someone mentioned further down that it was in the portuguese press.

morningpaper · 15/05/2007 21:30

How can we have threads like this and yet I get told off for libel!

Wordsmith · 15/05/2007 21:30

Exactly MP

amidaiwish · 15/05/2007 21:31

morningpaper, get on the thread about Verity at the baby show - she is the new nutter re routines, sleep through by 2 weeks and porridge at 17 weeks. no cuddles. own cot day 1.
you're needed!

Scootergrrrl · 15/05/2007 21:31

Ah that's because you're a nasty horrid journalist like me and we deserve everything we get...

anniebear · 15/05/2007 21:31

surely such a thing, huge story on the news. press etc is going to be discussed and yes, even speculation

Imagine if there were no posts on it...now that would be strange!

ScaryHairy · 15/05/2007 21:31

Agree, MP.

Whoooosh · 15/05/2007 21:31

I agree to an extent.
But if it were my child,I wouldn't give a shit (and so shoot me,nor do I now)if Robert Murat has his life disrupted.

I wouldjust wantmy daughter home safely-quite frankly-sod anyone else.

niceglasses · 15/05/2007 21:31

Yep, really think you should be careful and back off a bit. Its okay perhaps to discuss this in private with friends, but be careful on an internet forum, as we have found...........and really, the man is innocent until proven otherwise.

toomuchtodo · 15/05/2007 21:32

some of this thread is verging on the "voyeuristic" to me

too many people getting hysterical about something they know very little about

let the police do their work, MN isn't the place to speculate who's guilty or not

Whoooosh · 15/05/2007 21:33

Sorry Wannabe-didn't search though all the messages......

paulaplumpbottom · 15/05/2007 21:33

I agree we should be careful

debbsyandsonn · 15/05/2007 21:33

Come on now ladies we all need to calm down this is a positive thread

QM. Could you link to the reports of him (Murat) having child porn on his computer, please?

tiredemma · 15/05/2007 21:35

Where in the press is the information that he had child porn on his PC - link please

curlysmum · 15/05/2007 21:35

yes what about Rachel Nickell's so called murderer that was trial by media and that fella can't remember his name has never got a job again, no friends , etc , the police are usually keen to pin it on someone quickly in some case's , I think its terrible what a soap opera almost Sky have made this into. I think the Police should now be left to do their job without the interference from Sky and just publicise the McCanns appeal's etc as this is just turning into a media circus.

glassslipper · 15/05/2007 21:35

I've avoided posting on these threads for a while because I think the ethos has changed.

I stand by what I said below. Innocence until proven guilty is the main principle of a civilised justice system. Without it you might as well go back to Salem and have a real witch hunt.

I hope that Madeleine is found safe and well and that whoever has taken her is found, tried and sent to prison. I am horrified by the case but I have no wish to speculate on snippets of information which may or may not be true.

I dont consider myself a rubberncecker, just a concerned parent who thinks 'there but for the grace of god' and hopes that this little girl is reunited with her parents. I also hope that no-one elses life is unnecessarily ruined by such an appalling tragic situation.

mumemma · 15/05/2007 21:35

Can't we get back to the title of the thread - "news updates - a new positive thread".

It can't be long before the forensic results come up with something - he will have to be ruled out/called in for further questioning/charged. - he can't stay a suspect indefinitely. John O'Connor, ex-Scotland Yard was talking on BBC News earlier and said that in the UK we arrest people for the slightest thing (confirmed today by a separate story on the police and government targets) and in the majority of other countries, including Portugal, they really have to have concrete evidence before arresting and charging someone.

paulaplumpbottom · 15/05/2007 21:35

I haven't heard that anywhere
