I've not seen a thread about it at all, but surely there must be?

Donkey Oil. I’m pondering now on why secrets are kept by our Gov and to protect whom?
Far too many secrets are kept purely to protect establishment figures or cover up cock ups. There is no need for it. If people have been put at risk they have a right to know. We are not the governments children, we are their citizens and they should be straight with us.
I won’t be around in 30 years but if I am I will be making a huge fuss and waving my Zimmer frame in protest. I await the report of the chemical experts with interest.

DonkeyOil · 21/03/2018 17:38

Couldn't agree more, nursy. It should be an adult-adult dynamic, but so often we're treated as not being able to cope with details about things which are absolutely our concern and affect our lives. Whistle blowing and public disquiet seem to be the only things which will eventually ferret out the truth. That's not the way it should be. The trouble with disseminating information on a 'need-to-know' basis is that they think no-one else needs to know, and that we shouldn't worry our pretty little heads with such serious matters.

And if the authorities don't know, surely better to say so, than fumble about trying to convince people that it's all under control, when I just don't think it is, by the look of what's been going on over the past couple of weeks.

.....and Completely off. The point of the thread but any young Mumsnetters still round when this is released, Mark my words. He was killed!

The Hutton inquiry, which reported in 2004 that Kelly's death was suicide after he cut an artery in his wrist, has come under scrutiny from doctors who claim the medical account is improbable

Five doctors who made an application to the Oxford coroner to have the inquest reopened have been told Lord Hutton made a ruling in 2003 to keep medical reports and photographs closed for 70 years. "This is a revelation," said Michael Powers QC, a former assistant coroner and expert in coronial law. "I can't think of anything that would justify these documents being treated any differently."

70 years for a suicide Hmm nothing to see here, move along.
I suppose it is the same for his work colleague, who just happened to take a one way walk to the woods also.

This one worries me UK to ask EU leaders to expel Russian spies from own countries www.theguardian.com/world/2018/mar/21/uk-to-ask-eu-leaders-to-expel-russian-spies-from-own-countries. We are doing a pick me dance, asking EU to side with us and shun Russia.

We are leaving the EU, due to the will of the people. Russia is large, fairly scary and very close proximity to Europe. If I was Europe, I would keep my friends (EU members) close, enemies (Russia) closer and the STBExW (us) at arms length. We seem to be after full on cold war.

It is very sad that three people got poisoned, but this is turning into a political fiasco. Who poisoned them, how, why etc. seem to be right down the list of priorities. We know the outcome before the enquiry, though there is the remote possibility of it being another suicide.

So, what do WE gain from cold war?

Hi pestil and nursey I have nothing useful to say but wanted you to know you're not just talking to eachother .

"

pestil when you say
So, what do WE gain from cold war? do you mean that the UK is provoking a Cold War for reasons of it's own ?

( I'm not firing on all cylinders today ,and off out into garden to clear head /make or break me ,but will be back ! )

Thanks Lametts
It’s all gone very quiet. Apart from trying to get EU to make condemnatary statement re Russia.
Restarting Cold War? I don’t know. We keep saying we have to be friends with Russia ( especially, it seems, if they are writing cheques) I think the situation seems to have morphed into the U.K. asserting our validity as a world player. Which seems to have provoked the right noises but then everyone has carried on as normal. ( a long congratulations call Trump to Putin with no mention)

pestilentialboundary · 22/03/2018 14:48

The Russians seem to be quite pissed off with us twitter.com/RussianEmbassy/status/976791964514271232

7Days · 22/03/2018 15:04

Wild speculation alert:

Something I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere (Probably because it's insane).
Is it plausible that the Skripals poisoned themselves? The rest of the family was dead. Maybe they knew they were next and wanted to draw attention to dodgy goings on. The dosages seem calibrated. There is/was speculation that the precursors were carried by Yulia. The chain of events is not clear at all, and any traces they've publicised shadow very closely just their own physical movements.

I don't know. Nothing about this makes any sense at all.

pestilentialboundary · 22/03/2018 16:03

No idea is insane 7days, I have seen it speculated.

nursy1 · 22/03/2018 17:56

So, DS Bailey has gone home. He says he will probably not return to a normal life :(
There is also apparently some one else being treated as an out patient.
Boris has retreated a little bit from the Nazi comments having had a few things pointed out to him. Amazing how many forget the sacrifices the Russians made in WW2. It was very wrong of him to make those comparisons.

pestilentialboundary · 22/03/2018 18:11

Boris also forgot that the Russians boycotted the 1936 Olympics.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 22/03/2018 18:31

Boris is an idiot. Totally inevitable cock up that happens when you decide Boris Johnson is a good idea for foreign Sec. So much for that role keeping him out of actual trouble.

counterpoint · 22/03/2018 19:59

Maybe because Boris ( the Turk) has disgraced the U.K. with his Hitler vomits, I feel the agenda here is to distract Russia from its main recent roles in supporting the Kurds (against Turkey's ethnic cleansing) and from supporting the Greek and Cypriot gas finds (against further Turkish invasion) and therefore May&Boris are acting to destroy Europe!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2018 20:17

7Days that really is wild speculation. I think that we don't need to fill the news void with our imaginations.

Grim news from the court of protection case today eh. It’s clearly a massive diplomatic incident, but on a personal level, just so very sad for those affected :(

nursy1 · 23/03/2018 00:16

Perhaps they haven’t tried to wake them up yet. However It sounds like the Skripals will not recover.
It’s really sad that nobody has come forward to enquire after them, I know the family are dead but not a friend? Or a neighbor?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/03/2018 07:01

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43489457

Note it says that the PM says there is knowledge that the russians have produced novichok within the last 10 years and that "In a statement following an evening of talks in Brussels, the European Council of EU leaders agreed "there is no plausible alternative explanation"."

It must be a very compelling case indeed for such a statement to be made.

I think they have, nursy. I think Mr. Skripal is on good terms with his neighbours, from what I've gathered from the local paper, and from a friend (of mine) who is in regular contact with an immediate neighbour of his. And I read some days ago that friends of Yulia in Russia had been speculating that the Skripals were already dead, because no-one had been allowed to see them. I think friends are very concerned, but not much they can do?

pestilentialboundary · 23/03/2018 08:31

Independent has a small bit of info on the Skripals.
A consultant treating the victims at Salisbury District Hospital said that Mr Skripal was unable to communicate in any way, but said his daughter was unable to communicate in any “meaningful way”.
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/sergei-skripal-yulia-nerve-agent-brain-damage-health-hospital-salisbury-a8269056.html

Meanwhile the EU has recalled its ambassador to Russia. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43489457 Looks like we are going for the cold war option. Wonder when we will decide to not send a football team. The we are not going to send politicians and other important people on a fun freebie trip, is hardly a sanction.

pestilentialboundary · 23/03/2018 08:36

The Sun on Sunday had a sensational story about Yulia having a boyfriend in the secret service. Also claim she worked in the US embassy www.thesun.co.uk/news/5838665/boyfriend-of-poison-victim-yulia-skripal-was-russian-secret-service-agent pinch of salt may be required

viques · 23/03/2018 08:42

Donkeyoil I felt so sad when I heard that on the news. No one has come forward to enquire about them. Not a friend. Not a relative. No one. For either of them. A judge has had to assume responsibility for making decisions for them including whether or not to provide blood samples for analysis. The whole situation is increasingly bizarre and surreal.

I had not realised there was also a fourth victim, another police officer, who luckily was only affected enough to warrant outpatient treatment.

nursy1 · 23/03/2018 08:51

Donkeyoil no-one allowed in to see them

That’s a bit weird. I’m not surprised people are speculating. Being barrier nursed or being in a coma is not a bar to having visitors, it’s usually encouraged. Whatever this nerve agent is perhaps it’s not broken down in the body yet however they must consider police officer ok as would not have discharged him home.

pestilentialboundary · 23/03/2018 09:03

The Russian consul has asked how they are and to visit. They have been ignored.
