The express have an interview with the man who has come forward with the possible sighting, as soon as he got home and realised the importance with what he had seen he reported it.The portuguese police told him not to speak to the media in fear of jeapordising a good result but days on the man has now broken his silence in a bid to track the kidnappers.

WendyWeber · 07/05/2007 13:22

His story was in the Sun on Saturday, though so it's been out there all the time (didn't include the "vicious-looking man" detail then though)

He saw them 8 miles away, 8 hours later - Express item

Thanks I am rubbish at linking.

the reports of a child being seen on thursday night are just that, reports and nothing more. they've come from local journalists who claim to have sources close to the police, but the police have not confirmed anything, neither have they confirmed that it is a brittish person. Someone said on midday news on five live just now "this happened on thursday night, and since then there have been hundreds of phonecalls, and hundreds of little girls have been seen, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they were madeleine".

I think that in a case like this people seem to have this need for knowledge, and in the absence of formal confirmation of what is going on, the media grasp at snippets of information and, to a certain extent, make up the details as they go along. "police are investigating whether it could be a brittish person" well they would be. portugal has a huge expat community, so the idea that it could be a brittish person is not beyond the relms of possibility. "police are investigating reports of a man seen dragging a child towards a marina on thursday night", someone might have seen it. it could have been some rich boat owner dragging his stroppy, tantruming toddler towards his boat, or could have been someone trying to carry their drunk partner back home to their villa close to the marina, but if seen late at night, and with a bit of imagination, it could be imagined that it was a child, you know, someone could think "child gone missing, wait a minute, I saw some bloke dragging someone towards the marina on thursday ... could have been a child ... come to think of it they did look small and helpless ..." and then they get on to the phone to the police, or the media, and before you know it police are "investigating". and especially when continued appeals are put out "if you saw anything, however insignifficant", people will think and think whether they saw anything and might remember the smallest amount of detail..

fgs this is all pure hearsay, undoubtedly sensationalised by the British press for want of somethign constructive to report. Let's leave the Portuguese police to do their job and keep the family informed. imho This is no place for such speculation and discussion of potential witness statements.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 07/05/2007 17:22

press conference in about an hour apparently.

VoodooMama · 07/05/2007 17:30

yeah, bbcnews24 at 6pm, they say the police are going to make a further statement.

worryingly they had a sexual crimes 'expert' on who said lots of UK paedophiles/sex offenders operate out of portugal and the algarve.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 07/05/2007 17:36

that sounds very scaremongerish though don't you think? although my dh did say "it was probably some sex offender driven out of the country by the news of the world".

VoodooMama · 07/05/2007 17:39

a UK bloke would find it easier to abduct a UK child, a blonde girl would look noticeable with a dark skinned mediterranian-type, and a UK bloke sould listen in on the parents more easily to follow their movements, even 'overhear' details about the kids etc, I think a portugese speaker of English would struggle with the couples accents, IYSWIM,
wonder why they kept the search within 5km and immediately had a 'sketch' of a suspect?

dinny · 07/05/2007 17:44

just so tragic - am praying this little girl is found safe.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 07/05/2007 17:45

from what I heard on bbc, the sketch was based on what people had told them about a man acting suspiciously around the complex on the night she was taken, but the journalist they spoke to said the sketch was extremely vague, with no facial features at all. but he did say that it's almost unheard of for the police to make statements about these things, so the lack of information doesn't necessarily represent a lack of progress. I think we've just got too used to hearing every intimate detail in this country, and almost see it as our right to know, which in fact, it isn't.

spudmasher · 07/05/2007 17:47

I have just watched the appeal from the mum on the bbc website.
She was so brave and got the message across excellently.
I was very impressed by her fortitude.

VoodooMama · 07/05/2007 17:48

yes, I agree with that 'rule' as it doesnt necessarily alert the criminal, and wont compromise any future trial.

VoodooMama · 07/05/2007 17:49

they are a brave couple, the family have gone out there to support them, they are keeping smiles for the two younger children.
Please may they have some good news tonight.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 07/05/2007 17:53

when those prostitutes were murdered in ipswich, I was that the media published the name and address of a suspect that had been arrested before he'd even been charged. and as it happened, he was released without charge, but I bet people will remember who he was and what he was associated with.

the family are holding it together amazingly, if it was me I'm not sure I could go on national television like that.

Enid · 07/05/2007 17:54

stop

it

quietmouse · 07/05/2007 17:58

fgs - can't you give it a rest?

Xenia - I won't re post it but was your 11.30 post really, really necessary?

Some of the things being written on here are so heartless and pure speculation. There is no point to any of this imo.

I missed it, why was it a shambles nurseyjo?

Nbg · 07/05/2007 20:08

They've said that they won't disclose any information for safety, they're not saying for definate that she has been kidnapped and they are doing everything they can

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 07/05/2007 20:08

didn't see the actual conference but saw on news24 - no update, no new information, and pretty much no answers to journalists' questions.
