footballers giving up pay for nurses!

saralou100 · 19/04/2007 09:45

started by west ham skipper, nigel reo-coker, premiership players have been asked to give up 1days pay in an appeal, mayday for nurses...

out of 556 premiership players, just 71 have signed up to this!

an average premiership wage is £12,300 per week... with some of the top clubs players earning up to £100,000 per week.

of the 4 top clubs (chelsea, liverpool, arsenal and man utd) only 4 players have signed up. chelsea and liverpool have no takers!

readigs entire squad have signed up.

their arrogance is something to be ahamed of!

why do it then if you think your getting a bad deal?

noddyholder · 19/04/2007 10:30

I think nurses do work extremely hard for their money and never really get rewarded financially although I know it is supposed to be a vocation etc But footballers earn a fortune and it wouldn't even show in their wages!Definitely not green eyed monster though as I couldn't really give a monkeys what people earn as I have enough

nogoes · 19/04/2007 10:32

The government have messed up big time with nurses. No one wants to go into the profession because there are so many graduates without jobs! The government will be laughing if they think that premiership footballers are going to cough up their salaries.

noddyholder · 19/04/2007 10:32

There have been nurses who have sat up all night with me while I vomited and cried and cried and vomited and I wish i would come into some big money as I would love to do something for them. When you have really needed the nhs and seen it at close quarters you really appreciate it and see what they really do day to day.Footballers are in a position to do this and it is a pr exercise too I am just surprised more didn't want to improve their image by doing something good

saralou100 · 19/04/2007 10:33

my sister who works as a secretary in the nhs is paid more than me

as the link says, their are men painting white lines earning more

undervalued and underappreciated

when nurses finally got their biggest pay rise a couple of years back ther were cries that we were taking money away from patient care (ironic really when were providing that care!)

but nursing is a vocation. it's a thankless job and you would have been well aware of that when you decided to do it.

and tbh I don't think 18 k is all that bad - you would earn less than that working in Mcdonalds, but I don't see anyone starting a charity for the poor burger flippers.

noddyholder · 19/04/2007 10:33

Kittypants if everyone took that attitude we would really be in the s**t!

Lllllllllllledodgy · 19/04/2007 10:34

I really think it is the government's job to pay nurses more and if that means really high taxes on alcohol and cigarettes then so be it or maybe knock some of the money that gp's get since they don't do house calls or much out of hours work anymore. I think expecting footballers to donate some of their wages to another proffession is a bit of a cop out. I do think footballers get well overpaid but nurses are not a charity.

Gobbledigook · 19/04/2007 10:34

Hmmm, they earn a lot of money, it's true, but I don't see why they should feel obligated to do this.

It's entirely up to them which charity they support - I'm sure many of them already give their time and money to help charities.

I don't think they should feel pressured into supporting this one if they don't want to.

I support charities and have DD set up. I'm not going to feel bad if I don't put money in a box being shaken in my face while I'm shopping. This is the same imo.

Hmm, will see what everyone else said now!

nogoes · 19/04/2007 10:35

Your sister is very lucky then SarahLou because when I worked in the NHS the A&C pay scales were notoriously low, my sister works in the NHS as an Administrator and is on £15k.

kittypants · 19/04/2007 10:35

yes i know,i didnt mean it to sound rude(although reading back it does-0,i know what i meant.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 19/04/2007 10:36

and another thing to consider might be that if premiership footballers were to give up some of their salaries to give to nurses, the government would simply be able to take away that proportion of money and allocate it elsewhere.

noddyholder · 19/04/2007 10:37

I thought it was just a one off charity type thing.I don't think it is anyones responsibility to make sure nurses are properly paid apart from the govt but they aren't doing it and I see nothing wrong with a bit of goodwill.

zippitippitoes · 19/04/2007 10:38

michael owen has had 150k of medical treatment paid for by his club since last years world cup injury

his club is trying to get the money back for it

they have had over 2.5 million paid to them in compensation for his wages but that isn't good enough

Spidermama · 19/04/2007 10:39

Absolutely right noddy. Spending time amongst nurses when my son was ill restored my faith in humanity. These are good people.

They don't do it for the money. I would imagine < sweeping generalisation alert > that people who are money focussed aren't the caring types anyway and would make rotton nurses. It's still scandalous though that we take advantage of the fact that these people do their job out of love for others in need by paying them badly.

It's not footballers fault and fwiw I don't think they have an easy job either.

colditz · 19/04/2007 10:40

burger flippers don't have to go to college for 3 years to do their job. Burger flippers are not at constant risk of infection or assault. You can get a job as a burger flipper even iof you have a criminal record. burger flippers can walk out of a shift they cannot cope with without being hauled to court for 'Dereliction of Duty'.

That's why nurses deserve more money than burger flippers.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 19/04/2007 10:41

but who is going to get this money? how many nurses are there in the country, and will they actually see any of it? or will it be means tested and will the junior nurses be more eligible than those who work in positions of more authority?

I just don't see it as being at all workable tbh.

saralou100 · 19/04/2007 10:43

yes i knew what i was getting myself into

i don't expect anything in return (except chocolate maybe, lovely people give us chocolate )

i'm always hearing people saying we eserve more, and heres an opportunity, for one day to do that

thank god the general public feel differntly... well done to the 1700 that have made ther pledge!

nailpolish · 19/04/2007 10:44

this sort of thing gives nurses a bad name

it leaves a bad taste in my mouth

im a nurse and i dotn want charity, thanks v much

no one forced me to do this career, im not a martyr or a saint, for petes sake

i agree that footballers should reduce their wages so that ticket prices can be reduced for the man in the street

i also dont think its the players fault, good on them being rich and talented, its the clubs that are the baddies

saralou100 · 19/04/2007 10:44

wannabe, i believe it's a hardship fund to help those in fiancial need.. it's not for everyone!

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 19/04/2007 10:44

I think the government should look at how many nurses they want and need because it is strange that on the one hand they are paid to go to college and on the other there is a shortage of jobs. I think being paid to go to college is quite a bonus for nurses. Health authorities then close wards and don't have jobs for them at the end.

Nursing is a cost effective way to get a degree and move into another area.

nailpolish · 19/04/2007 10:45

saralou i hate the way nurses take gifts of choc etc, it annoys me, sorry

if we want to be taken seriously we need to stop bloody whinging and and taking charity in whatever form

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 19/04/2007 10:46

but saralou who is going to get the money? will you see any of it? I sincerely doubt it.

nailpolish · 19/04/2007 10:47

zippi - htats so true - LOADS of nurses do the degree not having any intention of nursing as a job

its also the most useful too there is for travelling

nailpolish · 19/04/2007 10:48

TOOL
not too
