What is the most likely solution?

OP posts:

@somerville

passports will be checked when travelling to GB , this will stop the illegals

Somerville · 28/11/2017 21:38

this isn't just about having fences and walls, there are such things as policemen and customs officers etc.

You must be being purposefully goady, Martina, no?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/11/2017 21:39

France and Belgium

France and Belgium are both in the EU

The EU relies on its external borders - like the one that will between NI and I

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 21:40

tsAllGoingToBeFine:

I'm saying we can have free movement between UK and ROI, but not between UK and EU - ie. Irish passport holders yes, others no

^yes, the EU did casue this mess by not allowing us to control our own borders" - so now you do want borders? I'm really confused. *

you feign confusion like the typical Remainer

Look at my post above

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/11/2017 21:42

So an Irish sea border then?

The solution that is unacceptable to UKGov / DUP / NI unionists and probably Scotland

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 21:44

Somerville@

that's hardly an argument, just calling 'goady''

if people are going to smuggle drugs or whatever they'll do so regardless, walls won't stop them , that's why we have other methods

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 21:45

@it'sall

but Ireland is not in Schengen so some kind of extra check is already in place, most of you guys keep forgetting this

cathyclown · 28/11/2017 21:46

Still no workable and mutually acceptable solution. Hmmm.

I am hoping that the summit on the 15th December will knock a few heads together.

Everyone knows that if Brexit goes ahead, the only real solution is a border somewhere in the Irish Sea. A majority in NI voted against Brexit, but are lumped in with the overall vote in the UK, where many do not even know they exist at all!

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 21:46

@itsall

nonsense, one has to show a passport when travelling on plane from NI to UK already - but its not a border

Scotland??? what about them, they are part of the UK which voted to Leave

GladAllOver · 28/11/2017 21:47

I'm saying we can have free movement between UK and ROI, but not between UK and EU - ie. Irish passport holders yes, others no

So you would have a hard border with passport control at the ROI /NI (UK) border.

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 21:47

cathy@

that's how democracy works my dear

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/11/2017 21:48

one has to show a passport when travelling on plane from NI to UK already - but its not a border

What about goods? Services?

Scotland??? what about them, they are part of the UK which voted to Leave

Scotland voted Remain. Hmm

Julie8008 · 28/11/2017 21:50

It seems like Remainers want a hard border and zero immigration more than Leavers do. I voted to take control, not build the wall remainers keep shouting about. The EU has to take responsibility for creating a union that cannot cope with countries leaving, its acting totally incompetent in saying other countries have to clean up its mess.

Illegal immigrants wont be stopped by border walls. Its the legal immigrants we also voted to stop. And they can be deported when they come to the UK. We dont need a wall to do that.

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 21:51

Scotland voted Remain?? What are you talking about? It was a nation-wide vote, and the result was Leave , that's all that matters.

services? This is where the work permit system comes in handy

goods - can stay more or less the same

Julie8008 · 28/11/2017 21:51

one has to show a passport when travelling on plane from NI to UK already - but its not a border

NO you dont.

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 21:52

nonsense, one has to show a passport when travelling on plane from NI to UK already - but its not a border

The last time I travelled on the car ferry from Belfast to Stranraer I didn't show my passport. So I suspect the plane requirement is more to do with aviation security than immigration control.

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 21:53

you need to show photo Id - this basically shows your credentials

and I mean your previous post was excellent, ie 2 back

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/11/2017 21:54

I voted to take control, not build the wall remainers keep shouting about

How do you propose taking control with no borders?

The EU has to take responsibility for creating a union that cannot cope with countries leaving, its acting totally incompetent in saying other countries have to clean up its mess

The EU is going to.be absolutely fine after Brexit. The UK is the one creating a mess by screwing up an international agreements with an EU member state.

Julie8008 · 28/11/2017 21:55

You DO NOT have to show a passport flying from NI to anywhere in the UK.

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 21:55

the Id requirement can be used on ships as well

Julie8008 · 28/11/2017 21:55

you need to show photo Id - this basically shows your credentials

Photo ID yes, passport NO.

cathyclown · 28/11/2017 21:55

Martina,, you said this - "nonsense, one has to show a passport when travelling on plane from NI to UK already - but its not a border"

So why would an Irish Sea border be a problem then?

There would appear to be a level of ignorance here that I have never experienced before.

But maybe some are trolling for a reaction with no firm solutions. Because there are none, unless Brexit is revoked, or the border is in the Irish Sea somewhere.

Some interesting but totally rubbish suggestions coming out now. With no back up as to the actual operation of same. But anyway.
