What is the most likely solution?

Teresa May needs to grow a backbone. She must be kissing Prince Harry's feet at the moment.

Who thinks she'll still be pm by the time the royal wedding comes around?

Whoyagonna · 28/11/2017 20:03

Varadkar is a bit of an unknown quantity in this. Enda Kenny would have done whatever the EU told him to do. We haven't seen much of Varadkar when it comes to tough negotiations. I wouldn't be willing to place a bet on what he will do.

Maryz - so you have 'I buy my suits from the local charity shop Corbyn'?

Theresa May is cruel and unfeeling. She seems way out of her depth to me.

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 20:11
Cathy: Same would need to apply to all other EU/UK imports and exports surely?
no, just have a special deal between UK and ROI and if the EU want to reject this idea then the onus is on them

Whoyagonna · 28/11/2017 20:11

Kermit the frog could have gotten that issue involved.

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 20:12

whosafraid:

sure it's a hard Brexit with the EU - and just a continuation with the Common Travel Area with ROI

So should we open a book on this?

Hard border no surrender
Special Status for NI, border in Irish Sea
Free movement of goods, but not of people (joke)
Brexit delayed forever mutually agreed (another joke)
Anything I've forgotten here?

There will be a solution, but what it is, I cannot see yet.

SixInTheBed · 28/11/2017 20:14

Ends Kenny's greatest legacy might just indeed be getting the Border Issue/ GFA firmly on the agenda. He was a wily politician and used the fact that he was often underestimated by his opponents to his advantage .

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 20:15

Maryz:

no, there'll be no trade area in the Irish Sea or on NI border - Ireland can freely trade with UK - but we (the UK) will control all our laws and immigration policy as determined by the Ref

Martina, that would require a border on the Irish Sea.

Unless you have another solution. We are desperate for a good and practical outcome here.

Whoyagonna · 28/11/2017 20:17

I think Britain is going to have to try for a hard border. With an exception (God only knows what) for Irish land border.

RavingRoo · 28/11/2017 20:18

The only way it could work is like Northern Cyprus - where those born or living in NI get ROI residency (and vice versa). It doesn’t have to be more complex than that really.

Julie8008 · 28/11/2017 20:18

Its sounding like the EU are getting the bribe money they want and we will move onto to trade talks. A virtual border will sort the issue and everyone apart from remainers will be happy.

Martina888 · 28/11/2017 20:20

it's the Ukraine model that we should be looking at - like I said above, trade area between ROI and UK but external control of EU immigrants coming into EU , if the EU don't play ball then we'll go for medium border

Whoyagonna · 28/11/2017 20:22

The UK is not stupid or ignorant enough to ignore the Irish question. They've been dealing with us for 800 years. Any eejit would have had to realise that was going to be a major issue. Even if it was Theresa May. I'm utterly surprised at how UN-vocal SF have been on the whole point. And I'm wondering why. When the DUP went into power in Westminster, I was also expecting mania, but nothing. Perhaps SF are all on Valium now or something lol.

Cathy says : Martina, that would require a border on the Irish Sea.

No, it wouldn't , what are you on about - the 'border' as such would be done with work permits which you'd need to show if getting a job and getting transport into UK or NI but not for Irish passport holders

coffeclub · 28/11/2017 20:24

Perhaps Teresa May will bribe bung the DUP another few billion from the magic money tree to encourage them to go along with a hard border.
