What is the most likely solution?

I mean, just put a border there, what's the prob?

Phuquocdreams · 27/11/2017 18:37

Martina, are you serious or are you doing a parody of a stupid Brexiteer?

Maryz · 27/11/2017 18:39

Oh ffs. The ignorance is astounding. Try reading a history book. Start with Wikipedia if you are too lazy to look further.

This is nothing to do with the EU not wanting Britain to leave, it's to do with the fact that the British government made commitments via the GFA which they are now intending to deliberately renege on.

I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you are uneducated rather than being deliberately obtuse and trying to cause a bunfight Hmm

LivLemler · 27/11/2017 18:48

That's a joke, right Martina?

I'm actually serious here - can't really see what the problem is. Think of the border between France and Belgium of 20yrs ago, before Schengen, no probs - that's how it will be between UK and ROI.

Martina888 · 27/11/2017 18:56

LivEmler: No it's not a joke, please tell me why you think it is

Maryz: The GFA talks about 'cross border co-operation' and that there can be even if we have a border - there's no provision in the GFA for the UK having to hand over NI

Martina888 · 27/11/2017 19:01

is someone actually going to tell me why having a border is such a bad thing, or will you all just keep beating around the bush, talking about Mugabe etc....this has nothing to do with him

Do you know what the Good Friday Agreement is, Martina?

Ifailed · 27/11/2017 19:06

Have you bothered to read anything in this thread? It's a border between the EU and the non-EU. Which bit don't you understand?

SergeantFredColon · 27/11/2017 19:11

Remember all those bombs and things in the 80s Martina?? They may have had something to do with the border. But sure just stick it back up it’ll be grand.

Martina888 · 27/11/2017 19:12

no point banging on about the Troubles or adding wiki links - that is a separate topic from the past

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 19:12

It's also a border that traditionally has caused decades of violence, as the legitimacy of that border is disputed.

Martina888 · 27/11/2017 19:13

the Troubles will not start up again just becasue of Brexit

SergeantFredColon · 27/11/2017 19:13

Yes but do you not think there’s a risk of it starting up again if there was a border?

Whizziwig · 27/11/2017 19:13

Martina, why don't you actually read the thread? There are many, many posts explaining in quite simple terms exactly why the border between NI and the ROI is absolutely nothing like the border between France and Belgium!

Martina888 · 27/11/2017 19:13

do you have any evidence that the IRA are planning to reform in case of Brexit?

SergeantFredColon · 27/11/2017 19:14

Oh that’s okay then Martina thanks.

Martina888 · 27/11/2017 19:15

well, I'm unlikely to read all 300 posts of this thread - just don't have the time for that - so let's start over!

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 19:16

Not only disputed, but paramilitary groups repeatedly attacked Unionists or British in order to 'voice' their dissatisfaction. In response, Britain and Unionist paramilitary groups attacked Irish, or NI nationalists.
It's not just a simple border. If you cannot comprehend that, well, I question your intellect.

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 19:18

Martina - the IRA, or versions of it still exist. Unionists haven't suddenly changed their ideology either.

Martina888 · 27/11/2017 19:18

yes, but that's in the past - times have changed and there's no real evidence out there of the Troubles re-starting, so like I said, this whole border charade is merely a disingenous attempt by the Remainers and EU to try and leverage the UK into staying in
