According to a friend who is a firefighter, it is not unheard of for fire-damaged buildings to be pulled down before evidence/bodies have been recovered.
That, I presume, is a decision for the engineers.

Belindabelle · 17/06/2017 15:23

I believe they know that up to 400 have died and they are trying to work out the best way to handle this information because they don't want riots on the streets when the security services are already so over stretched given the recent terror attacks.

They won't be able to hide the death toll because too many people are asking questions but they are trying to delay. However as time goes on people are getting more concerned and suspicious.

MonkeylovesRobot · 17/06/2017 15:23

Anyone have a link to the therapist pseaking please? Google isn't helping me out. Was it joanne stubley?

RhythmAndStealth · 17/06/2017 15:23

British Red Cross are there Carrie. RBKC have asked them to do an appeal for funds, and they are there at the scene

I do think they should have considered bring in some folk from the army right at the start (given that they don't seem to have anyone else, bizarrely). I don't mean large numbers of armed troops, but guys who are specialist in disaster relief and co-ordination.

It wouldn't be right to do it now that it's turned angry, as now it would look like it was being done for suppression of protest. But if they'd been sent in straight away I think it would have worked and made a huge difference.

RhythmAndStealth · 17/06/2017 15:25

Do you mean the ones they send in when there's been e.g. A landslide or an earthquake elsewhere in the world Statistically?

CoolCarrie

The Red Cross were there from on Wednesday.

MonkeylovesRobot · 17/06/2017 15:26

" The overwhelming feeling was of love, unity, and solidarity. Every corner of St Clements Church and Rugby Portobello Trust was taken over by agencies there to help: a makeshift housing office, a lost relatives bureau, the Red Cross, and a doctor and nurse station to name a few."

From a GP who went on Wednesday.

Jesus, what a load of weird suspicious conspiracy theorists on here. Isn't is perfectly obvious that they have to use the term missing until they account for people, rather than just speculate. And exactly what are 'they' trying to cover up? It is now widely known about escape routes, the sprinkler system, the cladding etc so how on earth are they covering up.

RhythmAndStealth · 17/06/2017 15:28

Feel free to keep on Truckingalong then

lobsterface · 17/06/2017 15:28

BRC have been there from day one

lobsterface · 17/06/2017 15:30

I don't think there's a conspiracy trucking but I do think the full extent is being downplayed. 600 people in the tower they think - if 400 got out we'd be hearing "sadly 30 are missing but we know at least 400 got out which is a miracle given the quick spread of the fire"

RhythmAndStealth · 17/06/2017 15:30

58 peopled missing, sadly presumed dead.

Kensington and Chelsea council and the tenant management organisation did not respond to more than 130 offers to put up displaced residents of Grenfell Tower and its neighbouring blocks, a volunteer who came to assist in the relief efforts has said.

And also

I know that the emails were received (verified by phone), but I don’t know if any action has been taken. Hearing that people are still sleeping on the floor, rather than at least spending the first few days with host families is heartbreaking and outrageous. For example, I offered to host six people. Never heard from anyone, and I doubt if any matchmaking was done between the local offers and the people in need. There is no lack of volunteers or of offers to help – just lack of coordination and organisation. Would be happy if you could support any efforts to resolve this terrible mess and make sure everyone has a proper bed tonight.

I've heard two similar stories on twitter, Why is it all so disorganised?

StatisticallyChallenged · 17/06/2017 15:30

now saying 58 missing presumed dead

RhythmAndStealth · 17/06/2017 15:30

That may change.

*An inquest allows the family members to speak, and allows for family members to appoint their own expert witnesses, rather than the government.

An inquest gives more power to the family and less to the government.

That is what the lawyer from the Southwark case said.*

YY.
The lawyer from the Southwark case said that was the big difference between the two.

However, TM said that the families would be heavily involved in the inquiry & would be able to shape the direction.
Also (importantly) that the govt would pay for the families' legal representation.

I don't think this will be allowed by anyone to be a whitewash tbh.

Statistically my grandad was army and was sent in to help with aberfan. So it definitely (years ago, anyway) is/was possible

dotandstripe · 17/06/2017 15:40

I totally understand why they can't confirm the numbers but 58 seems really low considering how many were living there. Do they have over 500 people who got out safely then?

SinglePringle · 17/06/2017 15:40

Apologies for slightly indelicate question but the 58 missing, presumed dead - is that on top of the numbers already released or in addition to? So, 30 plus 58?

megletthesecond · 17/06/2017 15:40

The police spokesman on BBC news is asking for residents who escaped to make themselves known. They know believe 58 people are missing.

StatisticallyChallenged · 17/06/2017 15:41

No, 58 includes the 30
