Grenfell Tower tragedy continued

RhythmAndStealth · 14/06/2017 23:17

Twelve people confirmed dead with that number expected to rise significantly.

Many others injured and distressed. People have lost relatives, friends and their homes.

250 firefighters in attendance, risking their lives in an unprecented fire and it's aftermath. Other emergency services and NHS staff working hard to help survivors.

Many questions to be answered.

Flowers to all those affected and everyone helping.

Not to take anything away from this thread (but as we are talking about HA's).

DH and I had the most awful experiences with HA's, to the point we were so belittled, bullied and threatened, DH felt suicidal. Not going into the details here, but our experience of HA's have been truly awful, and I can easily imagine what the residents of Grenfell Tower went though (in terms of complaining) and being ignored.

Attitudes to tenants have to stop!! The social class divide is ever widening, and it's so sad.

MelinaMercury · 15/06/2017 18:49

Oh Thierry, I had thought of your post earlier about your friend and her Mother.

I'm so sorry that she is gone and that you have had to go through this. Flowers

Albadross · 15/06/2017 18:50

Obviously this will out me, but I'm going to be on the Victoria Derbyshire show tomorrow morning with others who've experienced losing everything in a fire - the focus will be on giving the victims some advice in the aftermath - I'm hoping maybe some of them will see the show and know they won't be forgotten after the world moves on.

There'll be a lot of promises but if my experience is anything to go by, the chances of them meaning much, in reality, are slim. Remember the PM saying 'nobody will be left out of pocket' after the riots? Most of that money never made it to those in need. They promised the emergency services would be better prepared and properly funded, but there are still people searching for loved ones with no help - just as there were with the recent terrorist attacks.

I posted a thread (and I posted on the previous thread but wasn't sure it was allowed, sorry MNHQ) about a group I've set up for people with similar experiences because I can't just sit back and not do anything tangible.

I really feel for all the people in the other 4,000 tower blocks across the UK watching it too. Imagine how it must feel going to sleep after this happening. At least maybe they might do a big push to make others more safe as well, although I read many of them have this 'cladding' too. :-(

Thierry. I'm so sorry. Your post made me cry again. Such devastation in a few words Flowers.

Only one person who died has been named by family.

Daphne22 · 15/06/2017 18:56

The laws that be have already relaxed the rules on building and most house owners make their houses far too big for the plot they sit on. Tower blocks are built higher and higher to house more and more people. Lives come before keep throwing up homes on every tiny space. Of course the health and safety goes out of the window with such a rush in house building. It's not right to live 24 stories up in the clouds and even worse for children, it's no way to live even for a flippin animal! This could happen in any high rise, they all need knocking down! It should be illegal to build Tower blocks, the rich wouldn't like it. London has been a nightmare recently and I for one don't want to hear anymore 'Lessons will be learned' What does the hell that mean?

WomanWithAltitude · 15/06/2017 18:58

Sus1san2 - that is one of the most despicable posts I've ever read.

WallisofWindsor · 15/06/2017 18:59

Trending on twitter: #white man's Beko fridge explodes- Daily Mail blames Beko
#black man's Beko fridge explodes- Daily Mail blames man and proceeds to splash his photos ( including holiday ) on front page.
Like, really Shock

It is political in that MPs are our representatives in government. They are the ones who can insist on improvements to fire safety regulations. They are the ones who can improve tenants rights so HAs and LL can be properly scrutinised by those at risk from poor H&S.

When we say it mustn't happen again, we said that after Lakanal. Yet some recommendations weren't followed and some were only half measures in the first place (such as sprinklers not recommended as retrofitting due to cost).

ODFO Susan. That post is awful - you should be ashamed.

CivQueen · 15/06/2017 19:00

Sus1San2

'There's such a thing as work! Create it!'

What a fucking ignorant thing to say. You have no idea do you?

WomanWithAltitude · 15/06/2017 19:00

Poor people were placed in substandard, overcrowded housing. A building that was allowed to become a death trap. Dozens, if not hundreds killed in the most horrendous of circumstances, and you are saying they should have worked harder in order to afford a better home?

Words fail me. You may be comfortably off, but you are seriously lacking when it comes to basic humanity.

RhythmAndStealth · 15/06/2017 19:02

Oh God Thierry I am so sorry Flowers

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/06/2017 19:02

@Sus1san2 WTF?! In what universe is that an appropriate post on this thread, seriously?!

Christ, even Katie Hopkins behaved better.

CaveMum · 15/06/2017 19:04

Thierry I am so, so sorry for your loss Flowers

user1496484020 · 15/06/2017 19:04

Sus1San2. I'm actually speechless. Because all I can think of in response to you are a lot of expletives.

BossyBitch · 15/06/2017 19:06

Sus1san2, so what's the going rate for basic humanity then?

FWIW, I'm reasonably wealthy (six figure salary, successful in a professional career, been on an overseas posting for the last 5 years), but I'm not a monster - and FFS, if the value of my shares fell by 50 percent as a result of the government finally introducing humane social policies, I'd be happy dancing naked in the street. That would be because, like most people, I'm capable of basic empathy.

Not going to say what I'd normally respond because it would be very insensitive given the circumstances (those familiar with internet terminology may be able to guess).

quencher · 15/06/2017 19:07

I have been quiet on these threads but I can't take user..,, any more. What's your agenda on these threads, seriously!

Catminion · 15/06/2017 19:09

Sus1San2

What a vile post. Many of the people at Grenfell work. No normal wage will get you a family home (even a bedsit) in inner London either to buy or rent in most cases.

Sorry, but cash is needed now, no more old clothes.

WomanWithAltitude · 15/06/2017 19:09

Sus1san2 has basically saiD that the lives of those who rent are worth less than those who don't. And that they have themselves to blame for not working harding enough.

I've reported the post. What happened to making parents' lives easier?

There are parents out there right now searching for their missing children. Parents who had to throw their children from windows. Those parents matter.

Sus1San people in the local relief effort have said they have received so many donations in kind that they are overwhelmed.

So they are gratefully and respectfully asking people not to donate goods at the moment, so they can focus on distributing clothes and supporting the victims.

Oh and shame on you.

Go there, heaven forbid speak to people.

I think they have enough to deal with. It's not their responsibility to educate someone like that.

I am so angry that this has happened in 21st century Britain. There are no excuses. If building regs were complied with, then they are inadequate and the government is responsible for not taking action to improve them, despite many requests to do so.

If building regs were not complied with in any way, the organisations responsible should be held to account.

Prosecutions should be brought, because this was preventable.
