Trump's "Muslim ban"

bananaleaves · 28/01/2017 15:45

I can't believe he's actually done it, these changes are happening so fast, even green card holders are not allowed to reenter the country if they leave.

But muslims from Saudi Arabia are fine? Hmm

BTW why aren't the Muslim community speaking up?

Look at this link

muslimscondemningthings.tumblr.com

It is a 712 page list with links, which an American teenager produced , of Muslims condemning Islamist terrorism and extremism.

Hope you read through it carefully and learn from it

Lorelei76 · 29/01/2017 21:14

I'm sick of the "why not protest against xyz" - these protests go on all the time, the press often doesn't cover them.

originalmavis · 30/01/2017 00:00

Family Brits and Americans are bloody protesting. And if they are Muslim.

originalmavis · 30/01/2017 00:03

Haha - joint nationality Brits wont get banned. So just the usual shite not being able to pre check in (oops computer down!), extra checks at the airport, looooong holdups, extra vetting for British citizens, no dual citizenship, just for being born on a Bad Country (YES BRITISH AIRWAYS- YOU!!!).

FlorisApple · 30/01/2017 00:23

Maggie, I would be urging your Dad to get citizenship as soon as he can, because this racist shit is contagious, and who knows what will happen.

I'm 42 and I don't think I've ever been this fearful about what the future holds for the world. I am just in despair. Trying to focus on the emerging resistance in the US, but even that is scary; people I know will be targeted, possibly lose their jobs in universities and national parks, some will lose the health insurance that literally keeps them alive. I'm not exaggerating, it's that serious. Sad

The whataboutery is coming from people who think what Trump is doing is right but can't quite bring themselves to say it. It's pathetic.

More than ever, this country needs massive investment in education and skill development. We are trying to get on and stay on two boats at the same time. We can't stay decent humans and back Trump. We can't stay in the EU but can't tie knots with Trump's USA.
We need a population that can dissect the current politics or whatever is left of it, surgically. We need a massive improvement in education sector here. I doubt it will happen though. Not the Tory target in a million years.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 30/01/2017 12:55

I hope this encourages people a bit.

I had signed up to go to a meeting of a new activist group that has formed due to concerns over the Trump cabinet appointments.

As of Thursday 50 people had signed up to go.

Over 300 people turned up.

This is in North Alabama as well, not some Democratic stronghold and the people who showed up were mostly white, middle aged and elderly, and mostly looked middle class (for what that's worth). There were quite a few Muslim women in hijabs. There were not many black people as Al Sharpton was speaking at a local church that is also forming a resistance group which had unfortunately been postponed to be at the same time as our group meeting. People from the NAACP were there though so we can join forces with them.

theothercatpurred · 30/01/2017 13:38

It's a grave error to dismiss all this as Trump being a crazy loose canon making things up as he goes.

This was planned, make no mistake. Trump's in it for the power and money, but behind him are a group of right wing evangelical Christian Fascists-in-the making, including the Vice President, Pence.

They are currently busy reorganising the power structures at the top to make themselves less accountable and more empowered to just make decisions without involving what we would consider due process

This isn't going to go away simply by getting rid of Trump, sadly. This is a power grab by some really scary people.

I'll post some links later - must go do tax return now!

originalmavis · 30/01/2017 13:41

I think it shows us that we just can't discount the gobshites as, well relatively harmless gobshites. Farage, Hopkins... I'm looking at you.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 30/01/2017 13:48

TheOtherCatPurred I have read people's opinion that the Republicans are using Trump to get their most unpopular things through. Once he's served his purpose they can impeach him to great acclaim and Pence/Ryan can take over. Obviously they will seem rational after Trump so we can probably look forward to a second Pence term, and then Ryan running after him.

Bannon has been appointed to the National Security Council. He is Trump's chief strategist and extremely right wing. Meanwhile the military joint chiefs of staff membership of the council has been downgraded giving Bannon more influence.

Lorelei76 · 30/01/2017 13:49

Mysterious
That's good news
However I still feel, there wasn't that big a difference in voter numbers for him or Hillary. Do you think there are non voters who regret not having voted? Maybe they thought trump wouldn't get in?

Valentine2 · 30/01/2017 13:52

theothercatpurred
I am waiting for you to post these links please. Thanks

TheMysteriousJackelope · 30/01/2017 18:59

The comments I have seen from people who voted Trump or for one of the other candidates show that they are happy with how things are going. I have heard rumors of people regretting their votes on Twitter but I haven't seen it.

Lorelei76 · 30/01/2017 19:06

Thanks Mysterious
That's the impression I'm under too, people are happy with it
This time last year I was en route to the US
We saw stuff about Trump in the media and I wasn't worried
It seems like a lifetime ago, not a year.just all the stuff bubbling under that I had no idea about.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 30/01/2017 19:13

Lorelei76 While there are people happy with Trump, the people who are not happy are extremely angry and concerned. They can see how our rights could be eroded. That business with CBP ignoring the order of a Federal Court Judge and turning four high ranking senators away when they came to demand detainees be able to see their lawyers really bothers me. The people at the meeting I went to yesterday were grimly determined to be in this for the long haul. It isn't just Trump, it is Pence trying to establish a theocracy, DeVos trying to gut public education, Pruit trying to hogtie the EPA, Puzder trying to stop minimum wage increases, Bannon being on the National Security Council - a political appointment that even George W Bush refused to make as he refused to put people's lives on the line for political reasons.

Most of the people at the meeting I attended had never been involved in activism before. I think our local Senator and Representative are in for a nasty surprise this week as people start phoning their offices.

originalmavis · 30/01/2017 19:19

Is there a logo yet? I'm thinking the nice environmental 'resist' would make a nice t-shirt.

EnormousTiger · 30/01/2017 21:55

So many people rich enough to take flights. I've relatives who have never been on planes.

Whilst I of course think the dramatic temporary measure was not well thought out it does make you see why Trump and brexit won - that people rich enough to buy flights and go abroad have absolutely no idea about the pioverty and very different life of those who could never take a flight as they don't have the money - two different worlds.

We need now to seek to understand each other, listen and bridge the gap. Communication is what will achieve that.

TheElementsSong · 30/01/2017 22:10

So many people rich enough to take flights.

Hmm
Chippednailvarnishing · 30/01/2017 22:16

So this is just a rich people's problem? Hmm

So the rich people protesting about Trump the muslim ban and the bombing of Yemen is something we should just accept?

DorcasthePuffin · 30/01/2017 22:24

*So many people rich enough to take flights".

Do you know, when my family were desperately trying to flee Nazi Germany, they faced a terrible problem: the UK wouldn't accept them unless they had sufficient money to support themselves without jobs, and the Nazis wouldn't let Jews take any money out of Germany.

So many people with money, right? ! I have relatives who couldn't afford to catch a bus into town, let alone a boat from Hamburg to Southampton!

StarUtopia · 30/01/2017 22:58

This was my point..

Poor people in the US and UK genuinely feel aggrieved at the way they feel immigration has affected them. I don't think it's disadvantaged them as much as they think it has, but it's true their situation has in many cases worsened over the last decade or so. The only views they hear are those of people who haven't been affected, telling them they're wrong to feel the way they do and the extreme views of people who agree with them.

And seriously come on. Let's be honest. In the main, most posters are well off, white Londoners, who live in their own rather unique bubble.

I'm not saying Trump is right at all. However. I also am one that finds it someone ridiculous that we are up in arms about this, but no one batted at eyelid when Obama did the same to 11 countries back in 2011, or when women are stoned to death, or gay men toppled off buildings etc etc.

Again, two wrongs don't make a right and we are civilised (hopefully) enough to be the bigger person here. But (and this is a big but), Trump has merely put a temporary ban on for 90days whilst he finds out what's going on (pretty crap, but no one died) There are plenty of appalling actual things happening in the world that all these liberals choose to ignore and not stand up for - but are willing to stand up against Donald Trump.

I also agree with the poster above - this was all planned and goes much much higher than Trump - try the Rothschilds!!!

DorcasthePuffin · 30/01/2017 23:07

The Rothschilds? Care to explain further?

Eatingcheeseontoast · 30/01/2017 23:09

StarUtopia

The Obama banning situation was entirely different, not least because it wasn't drawn up on a Friday afternoon and not communicated to any of the relevant parties. It was in response to a specific threat and wasn't a ban.
