I've just read on the net about the 2 year old who was sexually assulte and murdered. why does this have to happen? I'm very upset as i'm sure you all will be once you hear/read about this. Have a look at \link{http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_yorkshire/6356009.stm}

So executing people would make it better, Bo?

hunkermunker · 14/02/2007 11:48

It's like smacking a toddler when they smack their baby brother.

"Smacking is wrong!"

"But...Mummy...? Er..."

LittleBoSheep · 14/02/2007 11:48

People who rape 2 year olds will never "address" why they did it, they wanted to so they did - taking her life in the process.

Give them 20, 30, years and you know what...if they wanted to do it again they would.

oliveoil · 14/02/2007 11:48

Sadam was evil but his execution was a disgrace. And his victims families wanted him alive to face more trials.

(dh disagrees with me on this one as well)

I think life should mean life, not some wooly 15 year cop out.

bundle · 14/02/2007 11:50

littlebosheep, I'm not even interested in executing the "right" (ie definitely guilty) people.

bundle · 14/02/2007 11:51

oo you want to smack your dh round t'head with copy of daily mail. or makeit the telegraph, it would hurt more

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 14/02/2007 11:52

Of course no one life is worth more than another, that is a ridiculous suggestion. But the nature of the killing indicates a greater level of callousness and brutality. How bad do you have to be to be able to do that kind of thing to an innocent baby? They are not all the same.

bundle · 14/02/2007 11:52

they're not all the same and the punishment should reflect that

oliveoil · 14/02/2007 11:52

I think paedophiles will want to attack again, therefore they should be IN PRISON and not out on licence or whatever they call it.

I would not want them killed.

Most have been abused themselves remember. Does not excuse the crime but is a reason for it.

And on that light note, I am off for some lunch.

oliveoil · 14/02/2007 11:53

bundle - he is a right wing liberal .

mumto3girls · 14/02/2007 11:53

Personally I agree with Olive Oil then..although I completely sympathise with everyone on here's initial gut reactions.

Ian Brady is slowly rotting away in a Max Security hospital and can't even win the right to starve himself to death. He hates his life (what he has) and yet cannot choose to end it. I think THAT is justice. If he was killed then, yes we wouldn't have to pay for his upkeep, but his actual punishmne twould be very short-lived.

hunkermunker · 14/02/2007 11:53

It's what you were saying though, GOH. You want someone to be executed for their crime in one instance and not in the other.

LittleBoSheep · 14/02/2007 11:54

Saddam's execution was terrible...they way it was handled...the method of execution.

Plus I have some reservations on the USAs reasons for being in Iraq.

BUT in the case of someone who commits a barbaric crime like this, people like Brady & Hindley where it is supported by strong DNA evidence and a strong case - the death penalty should apply.

Not for revenge, not as a deterent but we obviously cannot afford to imprison people indefinately in the style to which they are increasingly becoming accustomed and lets face it they will never be released to become trusted members of the community.

bundle · 14/02/2007 11:56

lbp if it's not to act as a deterrent or as revenge...erm...what is it for? to free up space??

LittleBoSheep · 14/02/2007 11:56

OO - I thought the "pedophiles have been abused themselves" was not in fact believed to be true any more.

mumto3girls · 14/02/2007 11:57

LBS - surely what you have just said is that people should be executed for economic reasons???

hunkermunker · 14/02/2007 11:57

How would you do it? Refuse them leave to appeal?

The US has Death Row.

You think it costs nothing to keep people there?

hunkermunker · 14/02/2007 11:57

What, in all cases, Bo? No, no paedophile has ever been abused

LittleBoSheep · 14/02/2007 11:58

Would I rather my tax money was supporting a nonce in prison or the health system?

bundle · 14/02/2007 11:59

HmmHmmHmmHmmHmm

The death penalty seems like the easy answer for people who commit horrific crimes - one injection and then it's all over? No. Locked up and the key thrown away - no release and no comfort items like TV etc. Food and water and a tiny cell for the rest of their lives.
Human rights? They forfeit theirs when they kill/torture others.

oliveoil · 14/02/2007 12:00

nonce?

lol

that reminds me of the sketch in Phoenix Nights with Peter Kay

surely no-one uses this term in a serious manner?

hunkermunker · 14/02/2007 12:00

A death penalty case in the US costs more though.

You think it wouldn't be that way here?

TaylorsMummy · 14/02/2007 12:01

fgs, i can't believe some of you people think this bastard is actually worth paying taxes for.

Any animal who can do what he did to a little girl dosen't deserve to live and have money paid out to keep him comfortable.

this country is a joke. people are so keen to be pc and going all about human rights - what about the rights of this little girl and her mother?

If that was my daughter I'd kill him myself. In fact I'd kill him if I got the chance even though it wasn't my daughter and happily serve time for it
