And now Germany - an axeman has attacked people on a train.

He appears to be known as Ali Sonboly. It is not clear why some parts of the media are calling him David instead (that appears to be his middle name).

Apparently at least 7 of the 9 killed yesterday in Munich were immigrants & the gunman had links to the massacre by Norway's Breivik. Breivik's purpose to save Western Europe from immigrants is just as dangerous as Islamic extremism.

GarlicStake · 24/07/2016 01:49

A couple of memes are going around, to the effect that terrorists are extremists. Not muslims, not racists, not blacks, not irish and not morris dancers. The unifying feature isn't their religion, their politics, the colour of their skin or whether they speak arabic. It's their overwhelming sense of being attacked by society and entitled to take revenge.

We need to remember this, and remind other people as well.

The other unifying feature is that terrorist are nearly all male.

Helmetbymidnight · 24/07/2016 06:45

Stidw, so you think it was a right wing terror attack?

The evidence doesn't seem to suggest that - it says he was obsessed with brevik - along with many other killers esp high school killers.

The idea of 'Saving the west from immigration' is stupid/horrendous/sick etc but (at the moment) it is NOT as dangerous as Islamic extremism.

shins · 24/07/2016 08:22

I know people would like the facts to fit whatever narrative they have but in this instance it seems to be neither an Islamist attack nor a right wing white supremacist attack. Sditw, most of his victims were of immigrant stock but so was he. I'm usually loathe to say " oh he was mentally ill" and ignore other glaring elements of an attack but this really reminds me more of a US style school shooting than recent attacks in Europe.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2016 08:38

immigrant stock is a horrible phrase!

People often don't fit into neat little boxes. One thing the horror of the shooting in Munich shows is the danger of jumping to conclusions and assigning people into categories.

It also demonstrates that there will often be copy cats and people who are easily influenced who then act on their own.

Helmetbymidnight · 24/07/2016 09:11

I think the copy-cat/contagion thing is huge.

We often hear on mumsnet, that 'you're probably never safer' than AFTER an attack- unfortunately this isn't proven at all.

reporting does have to be so careful -and it is a fine line. I remember was it rolling stone magazine put the Boston marathon attacker on the cover? - he looked cool - these losers are attracted to notoriety...somehow/ how? We need to tackle that too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2016 09:23

absolutely agree with you on that.

shins · 24/07/2016 09:39

I'm sorry if the phrase offends you, it was merely descriptive. I'm really struggling to see what's horrible about it.

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 24/07/2016 12:26

I think "2nd generation" would probably work better :)

Apparently the apartment block he lived in was mainly immigrant families, so that a large chunk of victims who turned out to be 2nd gen (as he was) could just because it was a particularly multicultural area?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2016 12:27

in my mind it brings to the image of labelling people like cattle. Though I do recall now the term that 'she comes from good northern stock' so it might not be as horrible as I first thought.
Sometimes idioms don't travel well.

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 24/07/2016 12:28

Stock makes me think of rolling stock.

shins · 24/07/2016 13:36

Of insert town/county/country of origin stock is a phrase in common usage. A quick google throws up uses of the phrase "immigrant stock"in recent papers published by the Carnegie Foundation and Stanford University. Is most definitely not "horrible" nor does it refer to cattle or railways. Thanks.

shins · 24/07/2016 13:37

("it is" I mean)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2016 15:30

as I say, Language is a funny thing and can have different implications or connotations in different regions.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 24/07/2016 17:31

And another incident, machete in Reutllingen.

One woman dead, suspect arrested.

Dontpokememon · 24/07/2016 17:47

One woman dead, two wounded, suspect in custody. Police have identified the suspect as a Syrian refugee who had been involved in previous incidents:

www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jul/24/man-with-machete-kills-woman-in-southern-germany

But let's be careful not to use words like "stock", 'cos that's simply unacceptable.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/07/2016 18:00

Well it is because as people said 10000 times people are more likely to be radicalised if they are denigrated by society.

Plus one attack doesn't make it right to use offensive terms in general. Unless you are a racist.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2016 18:01

very sad about another violent incident.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/07/2016 18:01

Love how people are almost happy that there has been an Islamic attack since they were wrong about the first one.

And believes that the attacks absolve them of the need to consider what language they are using when discussing innocent people.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/07/2016 18:02

It is indeed very sad.

WidowWadman · 24/07/2016 18:04

Couldn't have said it any better *Fanjo

Dontpokememon · 24/07/2016 18:04

fanjoforthemammaries

"Plus one attack doesn't make it right to use offensive terms in general. Unless you are a racist."

This is the third murderous attack in Germany in one week, and the second by a recent asylum seeker. Are you having trouble counting?

"Well it is because as people said 10000 times people are more likely to be radicalised if they are denigrated by society."

Awww... boohooo for the poor denigrated murderers.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/07/2016 18:06

Several attacks don't make it right to use offensive words in general about a whole group of people.

If you're saying I am sympathetic to murderers then that is simply laughable and ridiculous.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/07/2016 18:07

fanjo, some people just seize every opportunity to have little nasty digs. Even when something horrid has just happened.
