And now Germany - an axeman has attacked people on a train.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp I actually do sympathise with paedophiles, I feel extremely sorry for them, however possibly not so much with child molesters.

PickledCauliflower · 19/07/2016 00:06

Well, if I ever find myself sitting on the train with an axe in my head - I will consider if counselling is needed for the offender before I scream.
Am I allowed to scream?
Maybe it's best that we just don't talk about these atrocities at all - in case we offend anyone.

SemiNormal · 19/07/2016 00:08

PickledCauliflower - I'm not quite sure I understand your comment at all. I don't know who you think is offended but for the record I'm not. I don't understand why you would think people can't talk about these atrocities.

PickledCauliflower · 19/07/2016 00:21

I was being a bit arsey.
As long as the bloke with the axe is feeling ok - never mind anyone with serious head wounds.
I believe there are people who are seriously ill who commit crimes - they need help. There are also murderers who plan acts so that they can hurt as many people as possible - too many to mention.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2016 00:21

We'll probably never know his motivations because he hasn't 'kind of lost his life' - the police have shot him dead.

emilybohemia · 19/07/2016 00:24

People are expressing horror at the attack but recognising this was a child in pain too, pickled. I really think that is ok.

PickledCauliflower · 19/07/2016 00:25

Sadly - I don't think they had much choice.

SemiNormal · 19/07/2016 00:27

We'll probably never know his motivations because he hasn't 'kind of lost his life' - the police have shot him dead. - Fuck, sorry, I didn't know that. I have kind of been avoiding the news the past two days after Nice and what has been going on in Turkey, I find a break from the news does me good (but I still get sucked in anyway .....)

SoleBizzz · 19/07/2016 00:27

As long as it isn't an axe hurting you or your loved ones eh Twisted. Apt username btw.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2016 00:28

I think that in less troubled times, police would try to to deal with someone wielding an axe without having to use fatal force.

SemiNormal · 19/07/2016 00:29

SoleBizzz - was there really any need for that rude comment? Why can one not feel sympathy for the victims AND sympathy for young lad?

stareatthetvscreen · 19/07/2016 00:29

i'm with twisted and errol i think you're right

PickledCauliflower · 19/07/2016 00:29

I think if someone is wielding an axe in any situation - there is a good chance that the police will shoot them.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/07/2016 00:32

Jesus, why so much sympathy for an axe attacker and so little for his victims? Grim.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2016 00:39

The sympathy for the victims injured by this person goes without saying - it's a horrible incident, both for those who were injured and those who witnessed it and were treated for shock. Does that leave no room for compassion for a boy, the same age as my daughter, who has died? ( I think some posters were unaware of that, it may not have been known in the original report)

YouAreMyRain · 19/07/2016 01:12

He's 17, a refugee from a war torn country, he travelled to Germany as an unaccompanied minor.

It's fairly safe to assume that he's been through trauma, he's separated from his family. I have sympathy for him. He's been let down by a lot of grown ups, foreign policies etc. Poor kid. He's dead now, it's a tragedy.

I also have a huge amount of sympathy for the four victims and their families (14 others treated for shock - I have sympathy for them too)

Compassion is very important. Without it the whole world would be constantly at war, charities wouldn't exist etc

NickiFury · 19/07/2016 01:29

What a load of shit on this thread.

NotNob · 19/07/2016 01:36

The regressive left views on this thead make me feel physically sick. Perhaps you've incorrectly understood what has happened. Someone has taken an axe to innocent people on a train. You feel empathy for this complete scum?! You should instead feel ashamed of your misplaced feelings. Unbelievable.

BathshuaSpooner · 19/07/2016 01:37

Sorry, so sorry for the victims. Flowers

DancingDinosaur · 19/07/2016 01:44

Lets have a bit of sympathy for the people who were attacked by someone with an axe now eh? Because, like, they were attacked with a fucking axe. Maybe in time I could feel something for the 17 year old, depending on what facts come to light, in the meantime 4 people have been injured because someone attacked them with an axe. Right now thats where my sympathy lies. Anything else is just too soon.

Just5minswithDacre · 19/07/2016 02:59

What a load of shit on this thread.

This.

The focus belongs on the victims.

Some posters are being incredibly crass.

sportinguista · 19/07/2016 05:38

The experience of being a teen in Afghanistan is hugely different to being one in the west, both IS and the Taliban are present there and they both recruit very young boys. At the age of this boy you are considered to be a fighting man and may well have been within that organisation since early teens. I read an article about one such boy who had started off in the local Taliban and then progressed into IS when they moved into his area because they paid better at the time and had more perks. I imagine indoctrination follows. However traumatised it does not take away from what he has done. I worked briefly in probation and some if the accounts if offenders childhoods were harrowing, but unfortunately it didn't change what they had done and the effect on the lives of their victims. They also had, had access to counselling and help within the system but many reoffended over years. You have to remember that there are also others who have truly horrible childhood experiences who do not go on to offend.

My sympathies lie in the main with the victims who will probably never be able to forget what they have been through.

TheNewStatesman · 19/07/2016 06:03

"What an unpleasant post."
Unpleasant post for unpleasant times.

How pleasant do you think it was being trapped in a train carriage with someone trying to hack at you with an axe?

BTW, folding money says he's almost certainly older than 17.

BertrandRussell · 19/07/2016 06:24

""What an unpleasant post."
Unpleasant post for unpleasant times."
Nothing like adding to the unpleasant times, eh?

sportinguista · 19/07/2016 06:41

BBC are saying that main victims were a family from Hong Kong who were tourists. Apparently the perpertrator was heard to shout Allu Ahkbar so it looks like another lone wolf attack. Not something that can be predicted. It seems that a combination of mentally vulnerable individuals and radicalisation by those that would seek to use them may be going on. Stopping it could be hugely complicated as it might be those who don't show up on watch lists. I suspect once we know more about the background to this it will become clearer in the sense of motivations and any connections. Without having security guards on public transport all the time it's hard to see a way if stopping it and then anyone trying to do this would simply find other ways.
