Chancellor George Osborne will introduce his eighth budget at lunchtime today - he's expected to announce fresh spending cuts of £4bn, as well as a radical shakeup for schools in England, with every school becoming an academy by 2020, effectively ending local authority control. He'll also announce new funds to finance a longer day for secondary schools, with heads able to bid for funds for additional school activities and overtime pay.

Join us here to watch live at 12.30pm - and do let us know what you think of his announcements here on the thread.

I'll be very interested to come on and see what other people make of it all. I feel.. wary of all this schools stuff.

SunshineOutdoors · 16/03/2016 11:53

And a bit sad about more cuts, suspecting that they won't be hitting the less vulnerable and more well off so much.

gillbowden · 16/03/2016 11:56

The 'school stuff' is appalling. As a student teacher and a parent I can see no upside to the proposals at all. I can hardly bear to watch.

ThreadyPants · 16/03/2016 12:18

Longer hours? This is getting crueler and crueler.

feellikeahugefailure · 16/03/2016 12:24

It's starting, grab something firm...

coffeeisnectar · 16/03/2016 12:38

School day to be extended by an hour apparently. When most secondary kids have an hours travel due to the fucking awful school selection system, when are they actually meant to be kids or do any activities. And the poor teachers who barely get any time with their own kids will have their work load added to.

Toofat2BtheFly · 16/03/2016 12:39

CamboricumMinor · 16/03/2016 12:41

It's because he's trying hard to reconcile what he is saying with what he really knows is right but is choosing to ignore.

coffeeisnectar · 16/03/2016 12:42

Our economy is growing faster than any other economy in the world.

Remember this when we get told we need to make cuts.

seasidesally · 16/03/2016 12:43

ChemistryHunt · 16/03/2016 12:44
