Chancellor George Osborne will introduce his eighth budget at lunchtime today - he's expected to announce fresh spending cuts of £4bn, as well as a radical shakeup for schools in England, with every school becoming an academy by 2020, effectively ending local authority control. He'll also announce new funds to finance a longer day for secondary schools, with heads able to bid for funds for additional school activities and overtime pay.

Join us here to watch live at 12.30pm - and do let us know what you think of his announcements here on the thread.

Just for secondary I think?

If it's for primary then I might as well pull DS out and home ed now. He's ASD and wouldn't handle an extra 5 hours a week.

"Bet the money for the disabled is going to be spent on back-to-work schemes, or some kind of centres workhouses to replace benefits/independent living..."

Yes. This. But as some of us cant walk and they are taking away Mobility cars (even adapted ones) very fast (at least in Scotland) how the jeff are we supposed to get to the 'centres'??? Maybe we will be made to move into them? Sew some sort of badge on our jackets?

You can force new teachers to work the same hours as private schools. It doesn't kill private school teachers so why should the state schooler ones finish earlier?

RoseDog · 16/03/2016 13:13

Oh he mentioned that ridiculous V&A museum they are building here in Dundee, someone has to support it I suppose as no one in Dundee gives a toss!

I'll get dps thoughts on the oil and gas cuts when he gets in from work in the oil refinery...

coffeeisnectar · 16/03/2016 13:13

I'd be totally against a longer school day. Teen leaves here at 7.30 and often doesn't get home til 6pm. My youngest has stuff going on after school which would be impacted greatly by being forced to stay and do activities. She chooses to stay and play netball and do cross country two evenings but she also loves swimming and we would have to cancel her classes if this were to be enforced.

And if homework was still in place then our kids would be facing a 7-8 hour school day, possibly two hours of travelling and homework on top? Stuff that!

Downstairs
I think it is just secondary, but my post above was partly to illustrate that DC from Reception age onwards in Pre-Preps are currently doing the hours that some people up thread find so unacceptable for their Secondary age kids!

coffeeisnectar · 16/03/2016 13:15

DG don't private schools get substantially longer holidays than state sector? And considerably better pay? and probably working conditions? Teachers don't clock off at 3pm. They still have hours of marking and planning to do at home and they rarely leave the school before 5pm most days anyway because they have meetings, planning, meeting parents etc.

PixieChops · 16/03/2016 13:15

I think DC is actually in love with GO. The way he's looking at him is like he's eyeing up a sausage sandwich.

DG2016 · 16/03/2016 13:15

£115m more for the homeless.
Recent stamp duty changes will also apply to "large investors".

coffeeisnectar · 16/03/2016 13:18

Embroidery Surely prep school kids have much better facilities than state schools? Most schools already offer after school clubs, activities and sports. However, a lot of secondary school kids are doing activities out of school and when you add in the travelling they do, it's unfair to expect everyone to think it's fine, just because some parents think it's fine to inflict 9 hours of school a day on their 7 year olds.

EmbroideryQueen · 16/03/2016 13:18

Coffeisnectar

I'm sorry you might be faced with a longer school day if you don't want it, however there are lots of kids at Public a senior schools who wouldn't leave the school until 9pm (though granted if they are day pupils they probably live close by).

I can only assume the govt are trying to emulate the Public / Private school system?

DG2016 · 16/03/2016 13:18

0.5% extra insurance premium tax - so those of us sensible enough not to buy on flood plains have to support those foolish enough to go for the house with the view over the Thames.

blimey thats a bit harsh,im sure they teach more pupils per class than private for a start, and i would guess their job is more demanding than private in many ways

X posted, sorry, will reply again!

:o at sausage sandwich

BungoWomble · 16/03/2016 13:19

Has he said anything yet about funding this extra hour and finding staffinf for it when teachers are already leaving? Or how teachers are going to find the time to lesson plan for an extra hour? Did the schools get any warning about this change, let alone consultation?

The rabbits just got pulled out of a hat.

I'm distinctly dubious about these people promising more support for anything at the low end of the social scale. You usually find that, like with the junior doctors, they're giving one amount upfront and secretly taking it away twice. Liars and spinners. Haven't they noticed that no one believes 'we're all in it together' any more?

TM is like a nodding dog from the Churchill advert.

coffeeisnectar · 16/03/2016 13:20

My youngest will simply not cope with those kind of hours. 9pm? When do they get to just relax and wind down? That's like a form of torture.
