I am back from studio.

We're there mass attacks in Birmingham?

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 29/01/2016 00:20

Well my Labour MEP has never got back to me. Given the response of MEP Mary Honeyball to comments on Cologne it seems to me that the party line is it is racist to mention the events of NYE as anything outside the more general problem of patriarchal violence that happens all the time anyway, or something..

Sounds familiar.

CalmYoBadSelf · 29/01/2016 00:27

My Tory MP replied today. Agreed that assaults were disgusting, heart goes out to victims, etc. Then goes on to say how we are helping strengthen outer borders of Europe, support EU countries who are struggling with numbers and how we will take people in from camps

No mention of petition or early day motion from him

MariscallRoad · 29/01/2016 00:34

German authorities have started confiscating jewellery, valuables and cash from refugees entering the country to make them fund their stay. Switzerland has same laws.

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/germany-follows-switzerland-and-denmark-to-seize-cash-and-valuables-from-arriving-refugees-a6828821.html

TheNewStatesman · 29/01/2016 02:24

VertioNun--nope, it seems that there was some of the usual noisy, mobbish revelry going on on Broad Street on NYE.

So when Jess Philips compared the two, I guess she was saying "Cologne was not exception, it was no worse than what happens on NYE on most years"...? I guess. I am not in the UK so have to wait for someone to put QT on YouTube before I can watch it!

januarybrown1998 · 29/01/2016 06:51

mariscal Flowers for counting and for that Spiegel article which is one of the best I have read here. If you don't mind I'll quote it on the petition thread.

The Heroes project is interesting.

. In their view, the assaults reflect a bizarre understanding of honor. "I'm afraid that the perpetrators felt that women who were wearing Western clothes and were out alone at night had no honor. This is precisely the attitude we want to prevent with our work.

GraceKellysLeftArm · 29/01/2016 07:21

Holy cow. Norway have released figures on testing (dental and wrist bone-fusion x-rays) on people claiming to be unaccompanied migrant children.

90% found to be lying.

Even I as a sceptic am shocked at that figure!

Jess Phillips is an embarrassment to women and has come across as "a bit thick".

januarybrown1998 · 29/01/2016 08:11

"We should tell them not to be patriarchal"

Dear god.

I will be emailing her today with links to threads here, a guide to tarrush gamea in very small words and a request to publicly refute her ignorant claim.

They weren't heckled in Cologne. They were digitally penetrated by gangs.

kesstrel · 29/01/2016 08:17

That Heroes project is reminiscent of the anti-tarrarush movement in Egypt. Very interesting article here:
ema.revues.org/3536

Don't be put off by the synopsis in French at the beginning - the main body of the article is in English

januarybrown1998 · 29/01/2016 08:36

kesstrel that's also a very heartening article.

Although it is also horrific that it has taken so long to be exposed.

VertigoNun · 29/01/2016 08:43

Jess Phillips must have exclusively read the Guardian. Sad I normally like her.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 29/01/2016 08:49

words fail me

ffs while baiting and heckling is of course very wrong and should be challenged but it is not what was happening in Germany

Jess Phillips is meant to be the future of the Labour Party. she is an embarrassment to herself and the party, which I had suspected before but now that has been confirmed

LumelaMme · 29/01/2016 08:57

From the article linked above:
Is it acceptable to lower our standards on emancipation in deference to foreign customs?
The answer has to be no. Otherwise the rights of ALL women are set below the rights of SOME men.

The SOME men are not even all migrant/refugee men, because not all of them hold sexist views.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 29/01/2016 08:57

More embarrassing was when asked about EU referendum she sighed that she really doesn't care. I understand the need for politicians to reflect the electorate but think that is going about it the wrong way!

LumelaMme · 29/01/2016 08:58

Seriously, Sonya?
Who the hell elected her?

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 29/01/2016 08:58

(In answer to Enthusiasm's post.)

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 29/01/2016 09:02

I mean that the general public , including me, are under informed on the issues surrounding EU membership.

I have in the past shook my head and decided it all gets a bit complicated. Then again that's why I don't think id be suitable as an MP!

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 29/01/2016 09:03

She came across as very unprofessional and not very knowledgable

The party is a complete mess

Inkanta · 29/01/2016 09:04

Jess Phillips!! What a let down. Hmm

DespicableBee · 29/01/2016 09:05

I can't believe people are engaging with Emily
She never answers questions, so why bother asking them

DespicableBee · 29/01/2016 09:07

Sonya what happened in Birmingham
