What a pair. Her endorsement speech yesterday was just bonkers - words just fail me when it comes to Donald Trump.

Is this the best America has to offer?

You sound like some of our servant class of MPs in Parliament who wanted to ban Trump.

Well I don't wish to ban him from the UK - although it's more than a little ironic that he spreads his empire over here in such an aggressive way, running roughshod over the rule of law and anyone who opposes him.

He is a thick arrogant buffoon though - like many of his ilk, he's entertaining, but he really wouldn't be any good as a US President. He hasn't even been much use at anything except self publicity.

wasonthelist · 24/01/2016 22:53

OK, I give up, if you are seriously claiming that Fox News isn't total arse, you aren't worth bothering with, because you have no grip on reality, bye.

claig · 24/01/2016 22:54

'running roughshod over the rule of law '

No he doesn't, he appealed in a court of law. He instructed his lawyers to appeal.

'He is a thick arrogant buffoon though - like many of his ilk, he's entertaining, but he really wouldn't be any good as a US President.'

Well nearly 40% of the millions and millions of Republican voters think differently and have placed him top by a huge margin among all of the Establishment candidates.

ExitPursuedByABear · 24/01/2016 22:55

Okaay

So Fox News is real news.

claig · 24/01/2016 22:56

'if you are seriously claiming that Fox News isn't total arse, you aren't worth bothering with'

The fact that you claim that tells me you don't know what you are talking about.

claig · 24/01/2016 23:58

FatherReboola, we were talking about conservative Glenn Beck earlier and I said I thought he was a phoney conservative, an Establishment creation to counter conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and steal his clothes in a more palatable form. Now he has endorsed Cruz over Trump, as expected because Cruz would lose to the Democrats, but he has gone even further and said that he prefers Democrat Bernie Sanders to Trump.

"Beck said he had never endorsed a presidential candidate in his 40 years of broadcasting, but he made an exception because of the urgency of the moment…

…He said he even prefers Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a self-proclaimed “democratic socialist” running in the Democratic presidential primary, to Trump.

“Honesty, faith and truth are basic requirements. And quite honestly, I have to tell you, this probably isn’t going to go over very well, that’s why I like Bernie Sanders,” he said. “Bernie Sanders is like, ‘Yep, I’m a socialist.’

“I can actually sit at a table with a man who says, ‘Yes, I’m a socialist, and yes, I don’t like what we are doing, we should be more like Denmark,’ ” he added."

Something is bothering me about this whole Trump thing but I couldn't work out what. Somebody upthread mentioned it. I wrote yesterday about the very successful broadly social models that we live by in West, which have been incredibly successful for their citizens. Even if we get rid of the political class/elites, or Trump does, the issue of these social models and the pull factors that they create for world destabilisation will remain. The book 'The Spirit Level' shows us that broadly 'equal' countries do best (on mental health, crime, health and obesity, etc.). World inequality, for whatever reason(s), is with us, and this fact of inequality will continue to create instability, especially as the West continues to develop at its current rate and other countries don't. Trump, or anyone, can't do anything about this.

claig · 25/01/2016 08:53

"Glenn Beck endorses Cruz: Trump win is 'snowball to hell'"

money.cnn.com/2016/01/23/media/glenn-beck-ted-cruz-president/

Beck is probably nearly finished now. Lots of conservatives will now see through him and realise that he was conning them all along.

I don't really think that the inequality gap matters much. Madonna, Elvis and Trump will always earn far more than a factory worker. That is part of a free society. What matters is that ordinary people's wages and standard of living are rising and that hasn't been happening because iof globalisation and shipping of jobs abroad which favoured metropolitan elites and did not favour ordinary people.

Trump will change all that which is why the elite are so terrified of him. Trump's main support comes from the working class not from rich, establishment types who are all trying to topple him from pole position.

fourmummy · 25/01/2016 09:05

'I don't really think that the inequality gap matters much. Madonna, Elvis and Trump will always earn far more than a factory worker'

That's true when considered internally in terms of social organisation; I was extrapolating from research done on individual countries to compare the technologically advanced westernised nations, which offer an excellent quality of life to their citizens, with nations which have not or do not want to adopt our models. Capitalism, science, social safety nets, secularism (the 'social' models), etc. have all given our citizens an unprecedented standard of living. These will always be a pull for other nations even when you remove our politicians from the equation. This 'pull' creates worldwide instability. It's not our fault if other societies don't want to adopt our methods - but it'll always be a factor even if the elite are gone and we have a bunch of 'honest' politicians in their place. I think deep-down we all know this, which is why people vote on populist, short-term measures. I really do hope that someone comes in who can sweep aside the rot - but I don't know if Trump is convincing enough. One thing that's sure is that we are all clutching at straws and hoping for change.

claig · 25/01/2016 09:11

When you say "pull", are you talking about immigrations where people from poorer countries or war-torn countries want to move to richer countries for a better life?

Populist politicians will just control borders and not allow such high levels of economic migration. The current political class is against the populists.

The whole lot are against Trump which is why Trump may lose. But if he wins, the panic among the ruling class will be like nothing we have ever seen because people will be "going to the clink" and Trump will expose the corruption and who ripped the people off.

shebird · 25/01/2016 09:14

'Well nearly 40% of the millions and millions of Republican voters think differently and have placed him top by a huge margin among all of the Establishment candidates'.

What is the demographic of this 40%?

White
Pro Gun
Anti Mexican, anti Muslim or anyone that's not a white redneck like them
Anti women
Thinks the world starts and ends in the US of A

OP posts:
claig · 25/01/2016 09:20

The key thing about Trump is he is not a "politician", he hates even using that word to describe himself, he is not one of the "political class". He intends to clean up the "political class" and expose all the backhanders, the lobbyists, the "puppets" as he calls them, and the corrupt elites who worked for the advantage of crony capitalism instead of the people.

Trump is the fox in the henhouse. As a famous UKIP candidate, Winston McKenzie, once said over Farage "there are feathers everywhere". Only this is the United States, the most powerful country in the world and this is Trump not Farage, a billionaire who is tough as steel and has shown it by how he has handled everything thrown at him by the elite during this campaign. His crowds are huge, he mocks and insults all of the great and the good and the crowds laugh their heads off and cheer. When the elites tune in to Trump rallies to see what the hell is going on, they realise that their entire game is up.

claig · 25/01/2016 09:31

shebird, at the moment the demographic is mainly white and working class because it is a Republican nomination contest. But wait until the real election starts. Then you will see Trump's cross-party appeal.

"HOWARD KURTZ, MEDIABUZZ: If you are the nominee and you are not just trying to appeal to republican primary voters, will you tone down your rhetoric a bit? Will you reach out to minorities more?

DONALD TRUMP: Oh absolutely. I think I am going to do great with the African American minority. You know if you look at minorities, the African American poll came out - I was at 25%. No republican has been above seven or eight percent. I am going to do great witht eh African Americans. I think i am going to do great with the Hispanics. I think I am going to do great with the Asians. Howie"

Trump's biigest fans on the planet are the Stump for Trump sisters and they are black. Here they are stumping for Trump like only they know how. They are an internet sensation and very funny. They have even joined Trump on stage in front of thousands at Trump rallies. Their motto is "stump for Trump, baby"

Lweji · 25/01/2016 11:19

It's funny when claig the bot sort of ends up talking to himself.

Trump is the fox in the henhouse.
You are probably right there, but not sure that's the right image you want to give of him. Particularly when the henhouse are all the voters he's been managing to trick with his demagogy.

It would almost be worth having him elected just to see the disappointment in those trumping for him.

It's certainly worth asking: what has he ever done for the American People, the black population and so on?

claig · 25/01/2016 11:26

I'm not a he, but keep trying to evade the issue.

Stump for Trump! Trump 2016!

claig · 25/01/2016 11:29

BBC have what seems like an Establishment hit piece on Trump tonight on Radio 4 at 8 pm

They call it "Trump and the politics of paranoia"

Smell the panic! Trump 2016!

shebird · 25/01/2016 15:06

So Trump has got this far in business without cronies, lobbying and backhandersHmm He might not be a politician but he is certainly part of the elite and he is very much a capitalist. I really don't believe he is any different from the rest.

OP posts:
claig · 25/01/2016 15:49

shebird, you are right, he has probably done al that. He says in his speeches and live on the debate floor that he wrote cheques for some of his opponents, for Senators and all sorts. The National Review magazine, the learned Conservative think typers who think they represent the Conservative Establishment, came out against Trump with an issue called "Against Trump" and Trump said in typically politically incorrect fashion that one of the National Review contributors came to him "like a dog" begging for money.

He says 6 months ago he was part of the Establishment as long as he was writing cheques out, but as soon as he said he was standing, they all turned against him.

I don't think he is Establishment now. The reason is that the FT and the Guardian and the BBC and the entire political class are all in meltdown at the prospect of a Trump presidency becuase he is too big to control, too rich to be bought. There is one sure way you can tell that soeone is not part of the Establishment and that is on the issue of global warming. The Establishment are all bar none pushing it and doing kumbayas on it, but Trump says "global warming is bullshit". That is why they have all been told to stop Trump.

It is possible that Trump has tricked real conservatives. If you see him in a kumbaya, arms aloft, togetehr with the political class saying what they say "global warming is the biggest threat to humanity" etc (the usual spiel), then you know that the people have been tricked and the elite have won. if on the other hand he keeps flying in the face of political correctness, tweeting that global warming is a scam, and saying things they wish he wouldn't say, then you know he is with the people and that the elite are on the run.

We will find out in 2016, in the event known as Trump 2016!

claig · 25/01/2016 15:55

Trump'srallies are packed, Trumpites do the hokey-cokey at work, on the train and on the bus, millions tune in to the live rallies and the next debate is on Thursday night. It's all stations Trump, the people are behind him, the elite are in meltdown.

He has threatened he may not do the debate on Thursday night if Fox put up Megyn Kelly as one of the interviewers.

The Stump for Trump sisters are with Trump, and all people of goodwill are too.

The world is watching, Trump 2016!

Mistigri · 25/01/2016 16:05

What's notable about Trump is that while he has the strong support of a particular subset of voters (non-evangelical republicans who are sufficiently politically active to vote in caucuses), his support base is very narrow. He's very unpopular with independents and democrats. The fivethirtyeight website has some good articles about this.

Trump can fool some of the people some of the time, but not enough of them for long enough to make it into the white house.

I can see Trump's appeal - he has a lot in common with the French national front leader - but if he's the eventual candidate then he is sufficiently disliked by a majority of voters for them to line up behind an "anyone but trump" candidate (as happened in the recent french elections).

claig · 25/01/2016 16:14

Good points, Mistigril. But that is what the Establishment pundits have been saying from the beginning of his run and he has topped the Republican polls now for 6 months.

The African American poll came out and showed that Trump had 25% support among African Americans, compared to the usual 7 or 8% that all other Republicans ever got.

Wait till Trump starts wooing Democrats and the rest of America. I think he will do it. Hillary is not very popular among young millenial women who tend to prefer Bernie. Hillary needs the black vote but with Trump as high as 25% currently, she may not do well enough.

Trump hasn't even started on Hilary yet, he tells everyone. When he does, it will be like nothing we have ever seen. Remember he is not politically correct, he will tell the truth, that is if Hillary has not already been indicted by then.

batshitlady · 25/01/2016 17:38

I think you need to prepare yourself for disappointment Claig. I seriously doubt Trump will be allowed to stand, win, or do very much.

claig · 25/01/2016 17:47

'I think you need to prepare yourself for disappointment Claig'

Thanks, batshitlasy. Already prepared Sad

I'm used to it unfortunately. Sad
The People's Army was a damp squib Sad

UKIP stuffed full of stooges Sad
Establishment having a right laugh Sad

All hopes are now on Trump 2016. Hope springs eternal. Smile

batshitlady · 25/01/2016 17:55

Do you remember the optimism, relief, and the hope that Obama once represented post Dubbya? ........All a fantasy...

He (Obama) promised to end Bush's wars, bring the legions home and sort America out - - and did none of it. made it worse in fact...Trump is aiming to do the same thing. The establishment will have its way...
