Thread 6.

OP posts:
Wordsaremything · 16/01/2016 18:53

When it's active and we have a link, I wonder if it can be made a mumsnet 'sticky' ?

Wordsaremything · 16/01/2016 18:54

Great Will. So impressed with her response. I'm a very recently ex Graun reader.

Bienchen · 16/01/2016 18:58

So glad the petition has been lodged, I am no longer resident in the UK, so I could not help on this one.

Whilst I am not disputing Widows experience, it is just one person's experience. During the last 3 years in Germany I have not experienced any groping. I have however found that the stations have become a much more unpleasant experience. Please let us get back to the topic of mass sexual assaults in Cologne and other European cities and what we can do to avoid repeats.

Some more food for thought for German speakers.

This link deals with how feminists are great at being blinkered by e.g. likening the recent mass assaults to Oktoberfest.

Me too. Although I have no allegiance to any papers, I read them all and more. Smile

emily are you denying that the way Islamic extremists treat women (no matter what the politicians say) will influence public opinion more or less than words spoken by a feminist speaker or a politician?
Do you acknowledge the way women are treated by Daesh? In the name of Islam? Listen to this www.bbc.co.uk/news/34898778
If you want to get angry with anyone tainting Islam - get angry with the extremists...their actions are doing more harm than any words.
And what widow described - whilst unacceptable -is nothing like the scale of these assaults.
Followed by a cover up, denial, minimising.

Followed by women being told to modify their behaviour.
I really cannot understand why you cannot see the full implications of this.
Why anyone who cares about the rights of women can stand back and not take action.
Assaults already took place surely we don't need more...and of a different kind...to me it seems they were intending to intimidate than anything else...

(I will say again I am not blanket immigration, I have had friends who came from very similar backgrounds as the refugees (a number of years ago now). My long term DP is Arabic (born in the EU) ... )

unlucky83 · 16/01/2016 19:09

And fantastic news on the petition Grin ...will sign as soon as we get a link ...and share ....
Have we got the cologne 2016 gif etc or do I have to search though the old threads?
Do we want to post it in chat or even AIBU to raise its profile on MN ....
I'm so pleased ...well done everyone who's worked so hard on this and been brave enough to get it started.

The attacks in Cologne are familiar to Turks and how Turkey is moving backwards on women's rights amongst others in this excellent article by an imprisoned turkish editor:
www.welt.de/politik/ausland/article151074131/Frau-Merkel-hoeren-Sie-auf-den-tuerkischen-Kerker.html

I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful Turkish au pair many years ago. Lower middleclass background but father allowed all his daughters to have an education, including attending university. I have visited Turkey and stayed with her family; I wonder how likely this education would be for her now.

Cellardoor1 · 16/01/2016 19:14

I wonder what the media response will be to the attempted stoning of 2 trans women in Dortmund by North African men. Trans rights seem to rank higher than plain old women's rights at the moment. One things for sure, I bet trans women won't be told to stay inside or disguise their appearance to keep themselves safe from attack

HelenaDove · 16/01/2016 19:15

Surely culture and race are two different things and should be treated as such.

e.g. I dont recall any Irish or Italian person saying it was anti Irish or anti Italian to criticise and object to the Magdelene laundries. Because it was a criticism of how it was seen to be ok in their culture to commit false imprisonment of women and girls simply for falling pregnant outside of wedlock . This was victim blaming too because in many cases these pregnancies were a result of rape and abuse. And even in cases where it wasnt rape women were punished simply for having sex. But it wasnt racist to object to this.

My DM is Italian and i had many clashes with her as a teen due to the beliefs of the Catholic religion.

I objected to its treatment of women. That does not make me racist and i havent heard anyone get called that due to objecting to the culture of the Catholic religion.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 16/01/2016 19:22

because she doesnt care one whit!

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 16/01/2016 19:27

The poor trans women have said they are too scared to go out anyway.

hefzi · 16/01/2016 19:27

Sorry - just darting back in to say I've clicked the link etc and then clicked the link that generated: apologies - I'm currently off sick, so not regularly checking my email, and wasn't on Mumsnet to see the message giving me the heads up to get in there and do it Apologies for holding you all up Blush

Huge thanks to all those who have devoted their time and effort to this Flowers

I will circulate it round all the lists I am on workwise (so some of you may get it twice or more Grin) and also link to it from various work Twitter accounts on Monday.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 16/01/2016 19:29

you have to click the link in your email, it generates a lot of links!

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 16/01/2016 19:32

girlrising.com/about-us/index.html#what-is-girl-rising

just had this pop up on my Fb page, looks really interesting!

hefzi · 16/01/2016 19:34

Will I clicked the one that came back as a result of clicking the first link in the email and filling out the form- is there another one too? (will go back and look!)

emilybohemia · 16/01/2016 19:36

Unlucky, I'm saying the way they will see it is influenced by the medium they receive the information, so the way politicians or media present the information influences people.

The extremists won't suffer from the action you want to take. Refugees and Muslims will suffer. Or immigrants. All the other public attack victims you dismiss because the scale wasn't big enough and the attackers weren't brown will suffer. The Ku Klux Klan say they represent Christianity but obviously they don't.

I don't think the men in Cologne did that in the name of Islam.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 16/01/2016 19:39

I dont know hefzi I just know there are a few!

unlucky83 · 16/01/2016 20:11

emily so a woman who escaped the clutches of Daesh relating her experience is 'how the media portray' the extremists?
Daesh are very good at using social media to 'promote' themselves and their beliefs -they don't the mail or guardian to help them.
Actually one good thing that may come out of what happened in Cologne is if enough fuss is made maybe changes to the laws on sexual assault in Germany - which will improve things for all future victims -whatever the skin colour of the victim or the perpetrator.
Just wondering why you consider the skin colour of the men perpetrating the assaults is relevant? I don't.
Do I think ....
Are all people with brown skin muslim? No
Do all Muslims have brown skin? No.
Are all people with brown skin bad? No
Are all people with brown skin good? No
Are all people with white skin good? No

Are all people with white skin bad? No

and I could go on ...
I think if anyone is danger of racial stereotyping it is you...

I said before I do have issues with sections of all religions/cultures that treat women as lesser beings -whatever religion or skin colour or ethnicity.

And if this debated openly and honestly -and therefore isn't allowed to be hijacked by the far right (other extremists) - it will actually better for refugees and immigrants. Admitting there is an uncontrolled criminal element and chancers who have come along too and weeding them out will help genuine refugees - especially the females.

Hiding it and not talking about it will just continue to tarnish the honest, honourable, male refugees.

Hopefully the petition will be live soon.

It will be interesting to see how it goes..

VertigoNun · 16/01/2016 20:35

I will feel a lot better once the petition is out. I have a lot of anxiety for the future of women in general and if the far right take this out on all refugees. If this petition doesn't do well at least we tried.Flowers

Idoniamaud · 16/01/2016 21:00
