Blue

On the whole I agree with your DH. The left/feminists have been trying to minimise this, because it is non white men, so politically uncomfortable for them. The thrust of the argument on this thread is that we will deal with the issue head on. The multiculturism argument ignores the women. The feminists and the likes of Emily have been either silent or minimising

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 08:52

To fit this in

I call the government to integrate sexual harassment and misogyny in the Hate Crime legislation.

You have to remove the same characters from this:

On New Years Eve, women across the EU were subjected to mass assault.
UK women must be free to travel, work and live without intimidation, hate or sexual violence.
We ask the government to debate and enforce measures to promote and uphold women's rights irrespective of religious/cultural traditions

Maybe

On NYE women across the EU were subjected to mass assault.

UK women must be free to travel, work and live without intimidation, hate crimes or sexual violence.

We ask the government to debate and enforce measures to promote and uphold women's rights irrespective of religious/cultural traditions

?

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 08:54

Or

On NYE women across the EU were subjected to mass assault.

UK women must be free to travel, work and live without intimidation, hate or sexual violence.

We ask the government to debate, amend hate crimes and enforce measures to promote and uphold women's rights irrespective of religious/cultural traditions

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 08:56

Can you please check the character count now with your preferred new version? Or edit it again?

fourmummy · 15/01/2016 09:00

blyebolt that was exactly it but yours said it more eloquently. Never saw that one coming.

LumelaMme · 15/01/2016 09:03

YY to this.
Except... (pedant hat on) shouldn't there be an apostrophe (Year's)? Honestly, I'm not sure, and I can't see where to lose a character.

Sorry I buggered off last night: I'd just had enough, my brain had fused, I felt very miserable, I had two DDs stressing about different things and getting tearful.

I think men sometimes have much more delicate feelings and sensibilities than we expect, so 'mass assault' is better (it also doesn't focus so exclusively on the sexual aspect either - women shouldn't be robbed just because they're women!)

Pinkchampchoccies · 15/01/2016 09:03

"The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (c. 65) is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom which protected men and women from discrimination on the grounds of sex or marital status. The Act concerned employment, training, education, harassment, the provision of goods and services, and the disposal of premises." wiki

Multiculturalism is at the heart of Europe / EU. There must be social cohesion. People from different cultures must be able to live and work together. This is under threat when women are no longer able to go out alone and feel confident that they will not be targeted and harassed, belittled or hated for being female. People who emigrate to Europe or from European countries that haven't go a great track record for equality must adhere to the basic concept that women have equal rights and are not lesser beings. shouldn't have to be spelled out in this day and age

In the aftermath of the mass assault on NYE, German and Austrian politicians have suggested women don't go out alone at night or attend communal gatherings such as Karneval alone as their safety cannot be assured by the state.

This is sexual discrimination.

LumelaMme · 15/01/2016 09:04

Soz, Polenta, I'm a feminist - and I'm flaming!

polentapies · 15/01/2016 09:10

Well so am I Lume but the 'established' feminists have been very visibility silent on this. and have taken quite a kicking on Twitter due to the silence

I think it is stronger with 'hates crimes'

On NYE women across the EU were subjected to mass assault.
UK women must be free to travel, work and live without intimidation, hate crimes or sexual violence.
We ask the government to debate and enforce measures to promote and uphold women's rights irrespective of religious/cultural traditions

If we remove 'promote and' we should have enough space to make it New Years Eve ? What do you think?

Right, I'm off to the gym - back in a bit

Pinkchampchoccies · 15/01/2016 09:11

I love this reader comment in response to the Migrant Bogeyman article Guardian:

"it feels like open season on refugees and migrants"

But it looks like open season on women and girls."

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 09:15

Yes remove promote. We need a new thread.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 15/01/2016 09:20

It Summed it up Pink.

Olivepip59 · 15/01/2016 09:22

fourmummy · 15/01/2016 09:25

New Year's Eve should have an apostrophe - and looks better than NYE

Pinkchampchoccies · 15/01/2016 09:26

We could go on forever but how about:

On New Year’s Eve, women across Europe were subjected to mass assault. UK women must be free to travel, work and live, without experiencing sexual violence or other hate crimes. We ask the government to debate and enforce measures to uphold women's rights irrespective of religious or cultural traditions.

venusinscorpio · 15/01/2016 09:31

Agree that you should put the apostrophe into New Year's Eve - you could take the 's' off hate crimes to make hate crime - don't think it's strictly necessary?

Other than that, sounds great.

venusinscorpio · 15/01/2016 09:33

I liked intimidation, more punchy. But that version is fine too.

Pinkchampchoccies · 15/01/2016 09:33

yy to taking the s out of crimes

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 09:34

I like intimidation too.

Pinkchampchoccies · 15/01/2016 09:35

I have to go and won't be back for a good few hours.

Pinkchampchoccies · 15/01/2016 09:37

just before I sign off...

can we just double check what is exactly meant by

We ask the government to debate and enforce measures to uphold women's rights irrespective of religious or cultural traditions.

In a way the assault of NYW did not represent a tradition ....

Pinkchampchoccies · 15/01/2016 09:38

and were not religious...!

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 09:41

It's a catch all. Posters described being spat at by Men at school. There are posters on mn who have complained they were not allowed by employers to manage groups of Men because the men objected to her being a Woman. Others have said similar about training and interviewing. The culture is Women are beneath Men.

We need to get sex description to be equall to racism.

Personally I think disability discrimination shy also be on the same level too. another thread
