Yep, British politicians and public appear to have no interest whatsoever and I don't think they will until it happens here. Back to the 'I'm alright jack ' mentality that seems to prevail these days.
I posted an article about the backlash in Germany and the only people to comment were a couple of right leaning relatives. Complete silence from all my so called liberal friends.
Have also written to my MP (a female QC), no response as yet. All very depressing.

Moreshabbythanchic · 13/01/2016 07:54

Liesel I didn't receive a reply from my mp either, they really don't give a shit do they. I have emailed him again to inform him of my disappointment in his disinterest.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 13/01/2016 07:57

VertigoNun Whichever judge handed down his 'sentence' should be sacked.

2016IsANewYearforMe · 13/01/2016 07:57

Fantastic Swedish woman speaking on r4 right now.

Namehanger · 13/01/2016 07:59

They were talking about it on Radio 4 this morning. Only caught the end.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 13/01/2016 07:59

ItsJust It seems the only way to get an MP's attention is for a crime to be committed against one of his own family. If his 3 or 13 yr old had been raped, then we might see some action.

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 13/01/2016 08:01

Thinking about the WEP woman last night what is so depressing is that by bringing the debate back to the violence that exists in all societies against women there will be a 0% chance of doing anything about it.

IhateMondaymornings · 13/01/2016 08:02

I wrote to my MP on Monday night. I am eagerly awaiting his response.

2016IsANewYearforMe · 13/01/2016 08:04

No response from my MP.

emilybohemia · 13/01/2016 08:04

GraceKellysLeftarm, what do you mean about the ratios? That asylum seekers commit more sex crimes? I think you're wrong. Supposition based on racist assumptions masquerading as concern for the victims of Cologne.

Olivepip59 · 13/01/2016 08:06

Paula Bila (?) on Today was fantastic. Unlike Stickholm police spokesman Kohe Lauder (??my writing abysmal) last night who said effectively, re migrant sex crimes 'we don't say where people come from, it's not relevant and not something we talk about. That's hard, but that's how it is.'

Have some scattered ideas which I'll try and organise this morning.

In the meantime, thanks to all who are contributing positively.

We are intelligent, articulate and angry women who are waking up to the mess our politicians and policies have created and who have real and legitimate concerns for the future of equality in our society.

ItsJustaUsername · 13/01/2016 08:08

Not necessarily asylum seekers emily, but immigrants, yes. You saw the stats posted on previous threads as we all did. Not to mention the large scale cover ups and lack of reporting of these crimes meaning the figures are probably much higher.

rumbleinthrjungle · 13/01/2016 08:08

I can't paste the link for some reason but Alison Pearson in the Telegraph this morning - finally a woman journalist speaking out!

RufusTheReindeer · 13/01/2016 08:08

One assumes that women are going through the same dreadful situations that the men are both in their home country and their travels to "safer" countries and indeed in refugee centres

Where are the swathes of criminal, sex assaulting women?

I think (and have thought all along) that some of E comments have been interesting, but anything sensible they have had to say have been covered up by their inability to answer questions, and their constant accusations of racism even though many, many, many posters are not saying anything racist at all

But yelling racist is a very useful tool to try and shut people up, it probably works in everyday life...just not on here

Pinkchampchoccies · 13/01/2016 08:16

"I know we have paedophiles and rapists in our own community, but the ratios seem awfully screwed in terms of sexual violence and these perpetrators.'

The problem is amplified by a lack of transparency when these awful crimes are committed by ethnic migrants. Police do not want to deal with crimes by this population group. German media are beginning to talk about it at last.

emilybohemia · 13/01/2016 08:16

Itsjust, which stats do you have that show immigrants commit more sex related crimes? Lack of reporting is the case for all these kinds of crimes,so how do you compare?

ItsJustaUsername · 13/01/2016 08:19

They're on the last thread as you well know. A+ for persistence but you won't shut me up.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 13/01/2016 08:24

I must admit I was disappointed by the anodyne response from Mhairi Black in the webchat yesterday. Has any UK politician – apart from the gleeful Nigel Farage who has got his own agenda - stepped forward and said something real?

I wonder what Jeremy Corbyn’s view is? Whether you agree or disagree with him, at least he doesn’t give me the impression he’s reading from a script some party apparatchik has handed him. Given that he threw the idea of women-only train carriages into the ring, though, I’m afraid he thinks the lumbering testosterone-fueled male – whatever its country of origin - is a force of nature we just have to work around.

emilybohemia · 13/01/2016 08:25

They are for Denmark itsjust, not the whole of Europe.

Pinkchampchoccies · 13/01/2016 08:25

Another thought on 'clipped wings'.

Turkish / NA /ME boys in Berlin are known to cause a lot of trouble in public swimming pools.

Sexual harassment and large group fights among boys with an immigration background are pretty much the norm now. The last two summers the city of Berlin had to close several lidos for a number of days due to the antisocial behaviour of these boys. German boys are not know to cause this kind of trouble during the swimming season. I have seen it for myself. I would not send my children to a lido in Berlin by themselves. Sad

Pinkchampchoccies · 13/01/2016 08:26

"Itsjust, which stats do you have that show immigrants commit more sex related crimes? Lack of reporting is the case for all these kinds of crimes,so how do you compare?"

The German and Swedish police have admitted that crimes conducted by migrant communities are ignored due to political correctness.

Olivepip59 · 13/01/2016 08:31

Some other long-running threads have a 'sticky' or whatever it's called at the beginning, summarising the key points.

I propose we do similar, round up and organise information so we can start building resources.:

  • all the articles and clips that have been mentioned here
  • template MP/MEP letters
  • links to these threads copied to persons of influence
  • contact other EU countries (journos, women's groups) who are dealing with similar issues

People are waking up, it's just a question, like everything, of education.

PM me with anything I may have missed

BarryMerry · 13/01/2016 08:36

Emily... re your post at 8:04

If this were a case of simple universal patriarchal misogynist violence, we'd expect to see similar offending patterns between the white male European population and ME-NA men. The statistics from Sweden/Scandi show that's NOT the case. Immigrant men in cities like Malmö and Oslo commit a hugely disproprtionate number of sex crimes in relation to their demographic numbers. Something like 90 - 100% of stranger rapes are committed by those immigrant men. It's been conceded quietly by authorities, by never publicly acknowledged yet alone tackled.

Image from the Almost Nearly Perfect People which discusses the sex offending phenomenon of immigrants. Michael Booth the author is a journalist with full liberal credentials... think he writes for the Guardian.

GraceKellysLeftArm · 13/01/2016 08:39

Thank you Barry, you are very eloquent! That's exactly what I meant.

Olivepip59 · 13/01/2016 08:40

On another issue, I spent yesterday with some women who were organising and sorting clothes for the Syrian camps.

They also organise knitted items in which they sew a message in Arabic and Kurdish, along the lines of 'made with love and friendship just for you by xxx in the UK'

They were, as are many women, discussing the implications of Cologne.

It occurred to me that, having just sent a load of men's clothes to a refugee distribution centre, that a trick may have been missed.

Some attackers had crib sheets "I fuck you, I kiss you, etc."

What about putting, in every pocket of every pair of jeans, jacket, shirt, a paper with a message too.

Thinking on the hoof and train here but something that spells out we are very happy to welcome this who respect and accept our culture and way of life, that women are equal in our society (we could ask the Belgians and Norwegians for experience in the messages they have used) and if we even have one young person pause for thought, or become aware of the legal/deportation/penal consequences of sexual crimes, then it will be a start.
