Yeah but saying 40 assults, when everyone knows it was over 200
Are they allowed to lie like that?

Moreshabbythanchic · 14/01/2016 10:06

Nesrine Malik reminds me of someone else who minimises and denies what has happened regarding sexual assaults in Europe by migrants, cant quite think who.

glenthebattleostrich · 14/01/2016 10:06

Worth speaking to the press complaints commission. At toddlers at the mo but will Google wwhen I get home.

Title wise can it be something like cologne sex assaults on nye?

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 10:08

When we start promoting the petition we need to get it onto trending, so start tweeting/fb during an agreed few hours a day. Say 10 am, 1 pm, 7 pm and 9 pm. If anyone has better plans please let us know better times.

I never began any debate about women wearing headscarves. It seems clear to me that your campaigning is grounded far more in your fear and hatred of Islam and your desire to present it is a 'menace' to society, than in any intention to make Europe safer for women.

'But to wear scarf all day at work in office or shop is putting out a message'. It puts out the message that they like wearing a headscarf, or that they are a Muslim. I wear a headscarf sometimes in the summer to keep the sun off my face and neck. Older women in my village wear them.

GraceKelly "The whole "headscarf issue" is something I get very angry about. Those who choose to wear it are fighting against freedom for women."

No, you are fighting against freedom by saying they shouldn't be allowed to wear it and you would oppress women by taking their right to put a scarf on their head. In supporting women's rights, I support women's freedom of choice and their right to value different things to me.

This lady seems very happy to wear hijab.

And I've just realised I am reluctant to start this - partly because of the loss of anonymity on here. (Guess someone could name change for it first?)
Even thinking about putting it on my facebook page (seeing as actually post nothing on there - so it will be glaringly obvious)
I am worried about what certain people will think - am I aligned to the far right? Blanket anti-immigration?
We really have been brain washed...

Pinkchampchoccies · 14/01/2016 10:14

"The Guardian just gave MN the V.
I agree.

From the Guardian article:

"Suddenly it seems acceptable for even liberals to ask whether women’s rights and immigration are compatible."

Why should it not be acceptable? Acceptable to whom? Funny how liberals don't seem to like free speech unless it suits their agenda..... appalling.

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 10:14

Vic Derbyshire now.

LumelaMme · 14/01/2016 10:16

from the Guardian article:

Sorry, mate, but I can ASK whatever I like. It's called intellectual enquiry.

I despair, I really do.

I'm a member of the LD. I don't why I didn't think of this before, but I'm emailing Tim Farron now.

Where the hell are we going? When I was a small child, we lived abroad and one of my mother's closest friends was a Muslim lady. We used to go to her house, I used to play with her DC. She didn't wear hijab, she would talk to my father, her husband would talk to DM. When DM died, the most memorable condolence letter of all came from her ('She was my true sister' she wrote: I have remembered that for 25 years). It's the Islamist extremists who have fucked it up for people like that. If it wasn't for them, if all Muslims in Europe were like that family that I remember with such affection, we wouldn't be asking 'whether women's rights and immigration are compatible'.

It distresses me beyond measure.

And the reason the Right are wheeling themselves out as the defenders of women's rights is because the fucking Left is sitting with its fingers in its ears going 'Lalalalalanothearingyou'.

Fucking fantastic.

Pinkchampchoccies · 14/01/2016 10:16

Lovely, cosy, heart warming photo of a ME looking family. Poor 'journalism'.

LumelaMme · 14/01/2016 10:16

X-post with Pink
Not just me, then.

"It's the Islamist extremists who have fucked it up for people like that."

yes, yes, yes.

Constancegardner · 14/01/2016 10:19

Illiberal liberals defending the illiberal. It's a joke.

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 10:29

Amazing turn around from the bbc on vic Derbyshire.

They are using Taharrush term too.

Pinkchampchoccies · 14/01/2016 10:30

"No, you are fighting against freedom "

The freedom to be viewed and treated like a temptress?

No thanks.

The discussion about headscarves is also important, i hope it will not derail the thread though and distract from the action. I think many Western liberal women do support the right to wear whatever, me included and this is a difficult topic.

At the end of the day, the wearing of headscarves presents a symbolic 'othering' of us, Western society, especially Western women. It is divisive and opressive. But it is difficult to talk about.

Blimey those poor girls on Vic Derbyshire. What a horrendous night for them!
Good to see the correspondent from Egypt on explaining attitudes there and Taharrush. Basically sounds like women are regularly subjected to this but say nothing because victim shaming is the normal response. The correspondent sounded REALLY uncomfortable talking about it. She was taking a lot of time choosing her words.

Pinkchampchoccies · 14/01/2016 10:37

Guardian:
"Expecting the victims of crime or the general populace to embrace the nuances of long-term policy is a lot to ask. But instead of answering whether we care more about women or immigrants, we should reject that question altogether. If everything is reduced to identity, xenophobia and racism quickly creep in."

How arrogant Confused.

TheElementsSong · 14/01/2016 10:39

I'm still lurking on these threads and full of admiration for those pp who have been discussing so thoughtfully and working so hard on the text for the petition (obvious exceptions apply). I'm sorry, once again, for not contributing anything concrete so far - but when the petition is ready, I am willing to share on FB and Twitter under my real name. I am an ethnic minority, and an immigrant (from a Muslim country!) so we can hope my "credentials" will be acceptable to the critics among us. And I have two young daughters, whose future I fear for Sad.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/01/2016 10:40

Apparently the author of the Guardian's "40 attacks" piece has justified it thus ... read it and weep

Incidents of a sexual nature as described and sexual assault are not the same classification, this is not to downplay any incidents of a sexual nature (which range from everything from verbal harassment to assault), but the numbers are actually split between these two categories

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 10:40

Imagine being either Woman. The one being attacked and the one watching it.

34z67y90 · 14/01/2016 10:47

David Aaronovitch has written a good piece in the Times today about this. I will email him. I will email Harriet Harman and Yvette Cooper too (although I'm not a labour supporter) - they bleat on about supporting women's rights..... Their silence is deafening! I will sign a petition.
