"wearing a headscarf doesn't not hinder the capability of the brain or an individual's ability to do their job"

How do you know? Do you have evidence for this?

Pinkchampchoccies · 14/01/2016 07:44

I wonder if any ecological studies have been conducted wrt headscarve wearing and sexual violence.... .

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 08:02

No petition yet.

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 14/01/2016 08:06

Pink oh yes I read that. Proof that the problem lies with the mentality of the men doing the harassing and not the women's dress.

Not that women should need to do anything to avoid harassment of course.

Constancegardner · 14/01/2016 08:28

I like that banner from a demonstration in Germany, Silence hides violence, might put that on a few tweets, emails and even postcards. I'm going back a bit but postcards in the eighties were a campaigning tool, atom energy nie bedanck or some such (nuclear power, no thanks) cheap, quick, visual.
Love the logo btw.

CalmYoBadSelf · 14/01/2016 08:36

BBC are covering a sexual violence piece about Paris in the Victoria Derbyshire show at 9.15am.
I'll be at work but will record it

Pinkchampchoccies · 14/01/2016 09:10

Daft question, where are we with the petition and is there anything I can help with?

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 09:14

We are waiting for someone to start the petition.

Pinkchampchoccies · 14/01/2016 09:16

Effing hell

just read this, slightly off topic, or maybe not:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-35263230

It's an ad promoting a translation device. In the ad a male protagonist 'Dean' used the device to try to persuade apparent strangers to kiss him, who run away from him in horror.

One Facebook comment in response to the viral add:

"Fantastic! Now you don't need to learn another language in order to sexually harass strangers in other countries,"

Pinkchampchoccies · 14/01/2016 09:17

*Ad not add

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 14/01/2016 09:20

Pink "The headscarves issue is in reference to an article linked to yesterday, where a egyptian man talks about 95% of women being harassed in egypt on a daily basis, even though many cover their heads, whereas 40 years ago, few women wore them and sexault assault was not that common."

And if you've had time to read the link to how Afghanistan was, you will see no headscarves are worn. I believe France has got it right on this issue. A scarf sounds inocuous (not talking about burka) and in the street it is. But to wear scarf all day at work in office or shop is putting out a message.

I know that female muslim GPs in England do not wear the scarf in the surgery because they understand that it can be alienating.

GraceKellysLeftArm · 14/01/2016 09:27

The whole "headscarf issue" is something I get very angry about. Those who choose to wear it are fighting against freedom for women. Can you imagine the horror of spending years dreaming of freedom for you and your daughters, you arrive on British shores and then you've got e.g., Lauren Booth mincing around in hers!? (Makes it ever so easy for "home culture" to be enforced here.)

There are so many women in the UK who will not be given the choice as to whether they wear it or not - and then we've got these idiots subjugating themselves and citing freedom of expression.

I can wear loose, baggy clothing to hide my flesh and it means nothing. Don a scarf and I'm telling you that it's OK to treat women as second-class citizens.

Wrt Egyptian women: I worked with some who were sent to EU on secondment. I remember chatting to one asking whether she'd be going to a food festival in town. She said she wasn't allowed. Wtf? Your colleagues don't have a problem with it. No, apparently her brother would be phoning/skyping to make sure she was in the aparthotel - he'd also make sure she was at the office. Another stayed in europe and married a fellow Egyptian. She got pregnant and everything was fine until it came to labour... turns out the medical team got more (less???) than they bargained for when they lifted the sheet - EMCS.

We need to talk about this shit!

news.nationalpost.com/full-comment/tasha-kheiriddin-the-attacks-in-cologne-reveal-the-ugly-truth-cultural-relativism-is-harmful-to-women

'. The attacks in Cologne reveal the ugly truth: cultural relativism is harmful to women. And feminists who refuse to call out sexism because they fear being called racist are doing women no favours'

Constancegardner · 14/01/2016 09:35

Anyone still in missive writing mode? The Women and Equality Commission might be worth a shot. In the news today with regard to a report on transsexuality. Their Twitter output is v bland but am going to tweet them with the 'silence hides violence' slogan, Cologne 2016

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 09:37

I posted this link yesterday, I think it's worth posting again as it is now available.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06vkktf

I want a Penis tree avatar, now.

Frankfurterwuerstchen · 14/01/2016 09:40

ausnahmslos.org/

Not sure if anyone has posted a link to this previously but it is a positive step.
Ausnahmslos is without exception.

GraceKelly "The whole "headscarf issue" is something I get very angry about. Those who choose to wear it are fighting against freedom for women."

Thank you, Grace. France is still quite Roman Catholic and they do observe, BUT France does not allow signs of faith to be displayed in public. In private you can worship whoever you want to, but not in public, school, work. They are democractic so other faiths have places of worship and inside you can put on whatever type of dress you want. But not in public because it is divisive, imo.

Headscarves. GraceKelly said: "Can you imagine the horror of spending years dreaming of freedom for you and your daughters, you arrive on British shores and then you've got e.g., Lauren Booth mincing around in hers!? (Makes it ever so easy for "home culture" to be enforced here.) "

Absolutely. Interestingly enough I have seen a number of British-born muslim girls in hijab but with a face full of makeup; heavy eye makeup, lipstick, blusher - the works. Together with tight-fitting jeans showing off their form. It must be a well-known anomaly because such a character is featured in 'Citizen Khan' sitcom.

DespicableBee · 14/01/2016 09:55

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jan/14/migrant-bogeyman-europe-mood-refugees

' Germany, New Year’s Eve celebrations turned nasty as up to 40 incidents of sexual assault, '

So a blatant lie by the guardian saying there were only 40 sexual assults in cologne??
The last figure I heard was 560 with 45% being sexual

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 09:59

The Guardian just gave MN the V.

2016IsANewYearforMe · 14/01/2016 10:00

The comments are all critical to that article Bee. Thoughtful, but critical.

DespicableBee · 14/01/2016 10:00

How vertigo

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 10:00

Fuck The Guardian and Labour. I am cancelling my membership. The Labour MP withdrew her blog post yesterday and it's still not up.

unlucky83 · 14/01/2016 10:01

We need to get the petition up and running before we can publicise it.

We have the text for the description we need something that 80 characters long for 'title' (not 80 words as I read it last night)
which means it has to be much much shorter than I thought
We need Olive or one of the other people good with words - I'm not and I really don't do concise Blush
(from the UN link I like the word reaffirm though!)

'To take measures to uphold the safety, freedom and equality of women in the UK'
is exactly 80 characters long ....
