It's only 'liberal democracies' that tie themselves up with angst re. racism. In my experience in the ME, all nationalities had specific views on others, would hire according to race and pay accordingly. And that included the hiring of westerners - all in a big pecking order

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 23:32

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/check

Use #Cologne2016 and re tweet the petition when it's started and gif.

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 23:54

If requiring five emails puts anyone off starting the petition, you can use your email. David Davies suggested the petition so use his. If you don't have three people in rl, pm three of us for our email address.

MariscallRoad · 14/01/2016 00:09

Pinkchampchoccies I feel Cologne is better - perhaps because it is where it all started.

unlucky83 · 14/01/2016 00:10

Gosh - just caught up (again) - this is brilliant! Not much derailing and real action....
I like the cologne rather than Europe or world ...
and will share on fb when the petition is up and running
Who is doing that?
(I have lots of email addresses (hotmail/outlook/google) which all forward to one account - lots that are just for one or maybe two things - so if I start getting spam I know where they got the email address from...if someone pms me they can use one of mine ...).
Oh and BTW the link on discussion of the day and in the news goes to thread IV - not this one - how do you tell mumsnet to update them?

Wordsaremything · 14/01/2016 00:13

Just to point out the bleeding obvious David davies is anti-Europe so that , not women's rights, is his main priority politically.

Like many posters in the light of #cologne2016, I'm reconsidering my pro Europe stance ( unthinkable until, erm, 31 Dec 2014).

And it's certainly heartening that we are at last getting some response from politicians.

Just so everyone is aware, and all that.

polentapies · 14/01/2016 00:14

Final version from above below.

n New Year's Eve, hundreds of women across Europe were sexually assaulted by large gangs of men with unacceptable attitudes towards women. All women living in liberal democracies must be free to move about in public spaces and to wear what they choose, without the threat of sexual violence. In the light of these recent events, which have been recklessly minimised by sections of the mainstream media, we call on the British Government to have an honest and open debate about how they intend to address this menace to women's safety and uphold the liberal and democratic rights and freedoms of women.

However, the actual text for the petition needs to be less than 80 characters; How about:

Following events across Europe on NYE, we call on the British Government to have an urgent debate on how to address the menace to women's safety and freedom (please review..)

Also, if we want to tetweet, the top version is too long - it needs to be 140 characters, including the petition address.. We need to amend it quite a bit - gah!

The top version could be released as some kind of doc with a tiny url with the tweet?

venusinscorpio Wed 13-Jan-16 22:09:47. Thanks for the links. these photos leave me speechless. I had seen those before.

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 00:20

we call on the British Government to

That can go.

polentapies · 14/01/2016 00:21

Ok, the petition title is 80 characters, then there is a field for Background - a description of the petition, which is 300 characters so we could amend the original above, and there is a field for additional information (Optional - background information, evidence and references) - This could direct people here, with the permission of Mumsnet? Anything else?

MNHQ can we direct people to a thread here which will link to other threads perhaps?

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 00:22

women living in liberal democracies must be free to move about in public spaces and to wear what they choose, without the threat of sexual violence

This needs to stay.

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 00:25

We need something punchy then for the 80 characters and the planned description in the main body.

iPost · 14/01/2016 00:27

Surely those freedoms were not so much lost as stolen?

Valid point.

Also... If anybody needs an email address to start the petition they can PM me for mine. As long as I recognise the user name from here, we're good.

unlucky83 · 14/01/2016 00:37

I think something like polenta wrote
Following events across Europe on NYE, we call on the British Government to have an urgent debate on how to address the menace to women's safety and freedom (please review..)
is not far off the mark for the 'title'
...I think the second bit might be better if it was something like 'on how to protect women's safety and freedom'
or 'preserve' maybe - not sure of the right word just now -think there is a better word but can't think of it right now.

(and have to go to bed now ...)

venusinscorpio · 14/01/2016 00:43

Thanks for the links. these photos leave me speechless

Me too, Mariscall. They're sickening.

TheNewStatesman · 14/01/2016 00:45

Re the poster asking for the correct pronunciation of taharrush gamea--honestly, I would just pronounce it as spelt. The word seems to be, sadly, on the verge of going mainstream in the English language, and when that happens an Anglicized pronunciation is generally considered OK.

almondpudding · 14/01/2016 00:46

You might find the kind of language used here helpful:

www.un.org/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=A/RES/67/144&Lang=E

UN resolution on Intensification of efforts to eliminate all forms of violence
against women.

MariscallRoad · 14/01/2016 01:41

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3396091/Full-horror-Cologne-migrant-gang-sex-attacks-revealed-time-Police-logs-terrifying-experiences-victims.html revealed for the first time

I lost my peace since a week ago - never heard such massive horror attacks targeted on women by large groups forming suddenly in few seconds. I am out twice a week and come back very late. I live in inner city London but now move only with the bus because feels safer than train and tube. It takes me longer. Trains from London have now fewer passengers after Paris attacks and because of terror allerts the key stations have police with assault rifles. The people shown in the press radicalised lately lived in my borrough.

Igneococcus · 14/01/2016 06:21

That's an excellent comment bienchen, so please to read something like that from a female German commentator.
I'll email my MP and MSP.

emilybohemia · 14/01/2016 07:02

Helpforanimals, wearing a headscarf doesn't not hinder the capability of the brain or an individual's ability to do their job. Wearing a headscarf is fine and you seem disproportionately angry about it.

Supporting the choice of women to wear what they wanton their head does not make me an Islamic extremist. Calling me one actually shows your inability to debate and your fear of tolerance.

I have good intentions towards Europeans and I do not limit my compassion nor concern to 'ethnic Europeans as you seem to.'

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 14/01/2016 07:18

Why are we talking about headscarves? Hmm that doesn't have much to do with it.

People can wear whatever they want without being sexually assaulted. Headscarf or not.

Besides which I don't think wearing headscarves protects you that much in certain places.

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 14/01/2016 07:21

#heforshe has been surprisingly quiet on this.

LumelaMme · 14/01/2016 07:32

Regarding the EU, if David Davies is in this for the 'out' vote, I do wonder what the those who support the 'in' vote will ever say about it.

This should not be an issue in which only the Right has a stake. This is about women's rights. It comes to something when the political Left, apparently pro-women's right since forever, cannot find a coordinated and sensible response. Is the Left pushing women to the back of the queue because other things take priority? If so, what does that say about the Left? This really bother me, because I am not a right-winger.

Pinkchampchoccies · 14/01/2016 07:39

They
In principle I agree with that. The headscarves issue is in reference to an article linked to yesterday, where a egyptian man talks about 95% of women being harassed in egypt on a daily basis, even though many cover their heads, whereas 40 years ago, few women wore them and sexault assault was not that common.
