Wording for the petition is excellent.

Fucking hell - is it true that the men who carried out the NYE attacks will get German passports in three months? Merckel's experiment is very shortly going to bite us on the backside

Pinkchampchoccies · 13/01/2016 20:15

Let's focus on the petition...

CalmYoBadSelf · 13/01/2016 20:16

Surely a big part of this has been down to the Police having orders not to book immigrants so it is not just the news articles that minimised it

I don't think there should be a comma after victim blame either (sorry, pedant here!)

DespicableBee · 13/01/2016 20:16

It's not about being specific or getting legislation, its just about it being brought up in parliament, that Monmouth MP said it should be simple

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 20:16

Link the # to the petition at the end, so easily found.

What one are we going with?

Inkanta · 13/01/2016 20:16

Emily are you a man? Just wondered. You refer to women as ladies?

Pinkchampchoccies · 13/01/2016 20:16

haha despicable, I was thinking that. I remember group work at uni..... just joking.

Moreshabbythanchic · 13/01/2016 20:16

Emily my question was in response to this comment, please keep up!

"Forty years ago, hardly a woman in Cairo wore a headscarf, and public sexual harassment was rare. Today there is hardly a woman who is not veiled, yet they are hassled and groped on public streets.

"The same could be said for Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, along with most of the other predominantly Muslim countries."

And my life is just fine thank you.

2016IsANewYearforMe · 13/01/2016 20:17

Right now pedants are good! Criticise away!

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 13/01/2016 20:19

emily If you read some of the links on here you would understand where that question comes from, smartypants. Forty years ago in Egypt hardly any woman wore a headscarf, as well as those in predominantly Muslim countries. So what happened do you think?

Quote from Egyptian Hamed Abdel Samed:

"Forty years ago, hardly a woman in Cairo wore a headscarf, and public sexual harassment was rare. Today there is hardly a woman who is not veiled, yet they are hassled and groped on public streets.

"The same could be said for Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, along with most of the other predominantly Muslim countries."

I'm not sure saying that the mainstream media has minimised this is going to work. The Telegraph, The Times and The Daily Mail have said quite a lot. It's more an issue with The Guardian and the BBC specifically.

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 20:24

'We are concerned that sections of the mainstream media have minimised this issue'?

Or leave it out altogether?

What about the twitter 'campaign'?

Somebody upthread (sorry can't remember who right now) said that the female symbol in #Cologne2♀16 does not work on twitter but that a .gif would.... Do we still need this?

Emily disappears around this time of night....to cook her tea....change into twisted

Pinkchampchoccies · 13/01/2016 20:26

whoops that doesn't display well on the thread...

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 13/01/2016 20:27

MammaMary: "Re headscarves, I know in conservative Christian cultures, it was required when women pray. I don't know if it's similar for Islam."

Yes, when you enter a church if you are orthodox christian or catholic you put on a headscarf (not imposed in every church). However, not required to wear scarf in street or at work. That's the difference.

Olivepip59 · 13/01/2016 20:27

On New Year's Eve across Europe hundreds of women were sexually assaulted by large gangs of men with unacceptable attitudes towards women. All women living in the EU states have the right to live without fearing or suffering sexual violence. In the light of the subsequent non-reporting, minimising and victim-blaming, we call on the British Government to have an honest debate about how they intend to tackle the phenomena of tarrush gamea, to acknowledge the implications and possible consequences for women’s rights of these events, to assure us the our rights as women, as enshrined in xxx law will be upheld by all authorities and agencies.

Do we want to mention tarrush game?
anyone know what the bilking law is anyway that enshrines our rights?? EU equality bill or what?

Polenta, absolutely no offence taken! we are all understandably emotional.

I have just run a rather interesting informal focus group of some older teens, both sexes, in which we discussed the cologne events.

CalmYoBadSelf · 13/01/2016 20:28

Are you getting a bit frustrated now Emily? You diverted the debate for long enough and we have all tolerated your posts despite having requested you stop derailing numerous times and now, when people start planning action you are starting with the insults about our "sad, stifling, etc lives" Grin

Didn't get the unanimous support you were hoping for on the other thread you started either did you? That is because Mumsnet is a site where women listen, learn, debate and share rather than just agree with the person who repeats themselves the most time for the longest.

Olivepip59 · 13/01/2016 20:28

Sorry, cross post with a zillion people while I was plonking this out!

DespicableBee · 13/01/2016 20:29

Yes that's good Olivepip

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 13/01/2016 20:30

Pink That symbol looks really smart. Fab.

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 20:30

Olive, yours omits the bit about women's freedom of movement and safety in public spaces, which I think is crucial:

'Women across Europe must be free to travel where they want, and wear what they want, without fear or experience of sexual violence.'
