We need to find out how to start a petition.

I like what you've written Vertigo. Olivepip had some really good letters earlier. Any ideas to add Olive You are a very good writer.

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 19:58

petition.parliament.uk

If you don't want to out yourself you can pm me and I can post the petition link.

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 20:01

You can petition the government.
After 10,000 signatures it's guaranteed a response.
After 100,000 signatures it gets debated in parliament.

Petition the government

Or you can start a more general one at the likes of change.org.

Change.org. start a petition

hiddenhome2 · 13/01/2016 20:02

Ds tells me that a petition to parliament is aimed to get a debate and ultimately lead to legislation.

What legislation would be able to be passed surrounding this issue?

OP posts:
MamaMary · 13/01/2016 20:02

Oh, sorry, cross-post Vertigo. You've started a petition then?

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 20:02

Don't do a change one we need the government one.

So has anyone got any further improvements on the wording before someone starts the petition?

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 20:03

Hidden, I don't think we need to be specific about legislation at this stage. It would probably be to do with immigration and EU policy, if anything.

hiddenhome2 · 13/01/2016 20:04

What will the petition do?

OP posts:
LumelaMme · 13/01/2016 20:04

Yes to rewording.
without fear or experience of sexual violence would read better as 'without fearing or experiencing sexual violence'.
picky

hiddenhome2 · 13/01/2016 20:05

It needs to be specific otherwise you'll just get a non answer.

The petitions that do well tend to be very specific.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 13/01/2016 20:07

No, Jessica McCallin's article upthread - Muslim men misogynist.

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 20:07

On New Years eve across Europe, hundreds of women were sexually assaulted by large gangs of men with unacceptable attitudes towards women. Women across Europe must be free to travel where they want, and wear what they want, without fear or experience of sexual violence. We are concerned that the mainstream media has minimised this issue. We call on the British Government to debate the implications for women’s rights in light of what has taken place.

Above is a slightly amended version of Vertigo's - I think it reads slightly better, but could still undoubtedly be improved.

LumelaMme · 13/01/2016 20:07

How about:
On New Year's Eve across Europe hundreds of women were sexually assaulted by large gangs of men with unacceptable attitudes towards women. Women across Europe must be free to travel where they want, and wear what they want, without fearing or suffering sexual violence. We should not in 2016, have to experience news articles that minimise these issues or blame the victims of men who sexually assault. We call on the British Government to debate the implications and possible consequences for women’s rights of these events, to ensure that our government will ensure that the safety of women is taken seriously by the public, police, press and business.

No, I'm not an English teacher with a SPAG obsession

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 20:08

We then need someone to collate the previously posted twitter accounts to in a new thread link it. Then, with an agreed # tweet then fb the petition.

Complain to the Guardian, collate their advertisers.

Complain to the bbc overseeing group.

Link all information on the petition thread. Make it easy for people.

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 20:09

The petition will prompt a debate in parliament. And hopefully raise awareness.

And send a clear message that we will NOT tolerate the curtailing of women's freedoms, or the minimising of women's rights and freedoms.

LumelaMme · 13/01/2016 20:10

Actually, don't like the repetition of 'ensure'... um... how about, from We call...
'We call on the British Government to debate the implications for women’s rights of what has taken place.'
And just leave it there as Mama suggests? Otherwise we risk having an essay in the TLDR category.

Pinkchampchoccies · 13/01/2016 20:10

We should not in 2016, have to experience news articles that minimise or victim blame, targets of Men who sexually assault.

sorry Vertigo, the bit in bold did not make sense to me...

We call on the British Government to debate the implications for women’s rights in light of what has taken place in Cologne and other European cities (add this) to ensure our government will ensure the safety of Women is taken seriously by the public, Police, press and business.

I think it needs a tad rewording maybe not have ensure twice...

Pinkchampchoccies · 13/01/2016 20:11

*(add this?)

MamaMary · 13/01/2016 20:11

Pink, I suggested changing it to simply: 'We are concerned that the mainstream media has minimised this issue'.

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 20:11

I am dyslexic, that's why I invited others amend. My English is poor I do know. Grin

LumelaMme · 13/01/2016 20:12

It would really help to have letter templates with absolutely accurate facts like, for example, when did the BBC (inc R4) first cover this - I was certainly aware of it from R4 before the I joined whichever thread it was - 2 I think. If we're going to moan about the Beeb, it will be much better to moan accurately.

emilybohemia · 13/01/2016 20:12

Helpforanimals,

MoreShabby: "I don't understand all this headscarf wearing, is the sight of hair so arousing?"

Perhaps we can ask someone who knows. Emily, pls answer this question.

I don't know why Muslim ladies wear headscarves, nor do I need to as it does no harm to me or anyone else. As you are such fervent supporters of women's rights, I have no idea why you care either. Why don't you support women's rights to wear what they like?

You seem terrified of anyone a little different ´from you. I can only imagine what stifling, limited and miserable lives you must have.

Pinkchampchoccies · 13/01/2016 20:13

I quite like Mamas editing

On New Years eve across Europe, hundreds of women were sexually assaulted by large gangs of men with unacceptable attitudes towards women. Women across Europe must be free to travel where they want, and wear what they want, without fear or experience of sexual violence. We are concerned that the mainstream media has minimised this issue. We call on the British Government to debate the implications for women’s rights in light of what has taken place.

Cake Brew or Wine to all helping to get this out..

DespicableBee · 13/01/2016 20:14

I think let's just get on with the petition we could debate for years what to write in it,
