polentapies you have provided some great links.

Olivepip59 · 13/01/2016 19:05

Sorry, did I make it sound like we were a minority? I wanted to emphasis the inclusive of ALL women living here factor.

venusinscorpio · 13/01/2016 19:06

Will be really interested to listen to the radio programme about medieval attitudes to sexual violence as women's rights in medieval and early modern Europe is an academic interest of mine, thanks so much to a PP who posted the link.

2016IsANewYearforMe · 13/01/2016 19:07

Keeping basic order is a fundamental duty of the state. It's beyond just women-stuff. If half the population risks gang rape just commuting to work, we'd be living in a failed state. I really hope the powers that be "get that."

polentapies · 13/01/2016 19:16

Sorry Olive I was sounding off; I think this has all been getting to me and that came over quite rude. Sorry! flowers.

But I'm not sure about priority as that makes it sounds as if there is a pecking order. How about the language of women (and men's) Inalienable Rights' etc. to be safe etc Isn't there a UN Women's charter of something we could use some of the phraseology from.

Just braindumping tho', yours was great

Liesel Gaunt is an okay guy. Shoots from the hip, but honest. Does not deny or contort.

polentapies · 13/01/2016 19:18

well that didn't work.... Flowers

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 19:18

Venus, there is a thread in History club, it's where I got the link.

Pinkchampchoccies · 13/01/2016 19:18

Mamamary

That is an excellent article!

"One becomes a Salafist, another a drug dealer, pickpocket, or womanizer. One sees in European men only crusaders bent on destroying Islam, the other sees in European women only the porn stars they remember from the Internet."

I mentioned porn in thread 1 somewhere and I can only imagine the damage Porn does to men who have basically no everyday contact with women.

venusinscorpio · 13/01/2016 19:19

Ooh thanks Vertigo!

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 13/01/2016 19:20

MoreShabby: "I don't understand all this headscarf wearing, is the sight of hair so arousing?"

Perhaps we can ask someone who knows. Emily, pls answer this question.

Pinkchampchoccies · 13/01/2016 19:22

"Guys, complain to Ofcom, the broadcast media regulator, about the BBC."
And about the Guardian?

glenthebattleostrich · 13/01/2016 19:25

I think the only thing we can do about the guardian is make it clear it is being boycotted and why.

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 19:26

How can you do that Glen?

glenthebattleostrich · 13/01/2016 19:31

Write to them and their publisher or owner I guess. Use social media again. Possibly a second petition? Perhaps contact their advertisers and ask them for their thoughts?

glenthebattleostrich · 13/01/2016 19:32

I guess I was rather in elegantly saying there isn't much we can do as they are a private business other than loudly shout about the biased coverage.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 13/01/2016 19:36

MammaMary: Yes, the McCallin piece is very good. In fact, other posters were saying exactly that 3000 posts back in threads 1 & 2 but were deleted by MN because it was thought "inflammatory" following a complaint by someone who did not want a full debate.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 13/01/2016 19:44

2016isaNewYear: "Keeping basic order is a fundamental duty of the state. If half the population risks gang rape just commuting to work, we'd be living in a failed state."

And that would not please employers. Perhaps a c.c. to the CBI ?

2016IsANewYearforMe · 13/01/2016 19:45

Who is McCallin? Do you mean Hamed Abdel-Samad? That was a very informative piece.

hiddenhome2 · 13/01/2016 19:46

Do we have to contact our constituency MPs?

This, absolutely!

On New Years eve across Europe hundreds of women were sexually assaulted by large gangs of men with unacceptable attitudes towards women. Women across Europe must be free to travel where they want, and wear what they want, without fear or experience of sexual violence. We should not in 2016, have to experience news articles that minimise or victim blame, targets of Men who sexually assault. We call on the British Government to debate the implications for women’s rights in light of what has taken place to ensure our government will ensure the safety of Women is taken seriously by the public, Police, press and business.

VertigoNun · 13/01/2016 19:51

Who is starting the petition?

iPost · 13/01/2016 19:51

The piece by Hamed Abdel-Samad is the most informative and least mealy mouthed article I've read.

This bit stuck out ..

"I come from Egypt, where the sexual abuse of women has now reached an unbearable scale, in part because it was initially ignored or downplayed. This can be ascribed to a few factors: for one, it is difficult to admit in a supposedly religious, moral society that many women are sexually abused; for another, there are concerns about the effect a more open discussion might have on tourism, one of the country's main sources of income. And many even go a step further and blame the victims because of the way they dress. The hypocrisy and unwillingness to confront the problem have turned a limited phenomenon into an epidemic: over 95 percent of Egyptian women report daily experience with sexual abuse and sexual coercion.

Thank you to the poster who provided the link.
