I'd really like to point out that not all the feminists concerned about safe spaces for women are absent.

2016IsANewYearforMe · 10/01/2016 22:43

For heavens sake, just don't even read emily or twisted's posts at all! Much less comment on them. It's derailing useful debate. I have no idea who they/he/she are, but I don't think they are sincere.

TwistedReach · 10/01/2016 22:45

Emily- it seems unlikely we can have any influence on the thinking of these people - I don't know. I do think the level of paranoia is reflective of the paranoia that is around about immigrants/ refugees and is often a factor in racism.
It is very sad.

I often just watch posts because don't have the energy to engage. But see people making points that get shouted down etc but feel pleased to see them posting. So we might not be able to engage with some of the people on the thread - they think we are part of a conspiracy for gods sake! But there will be others reading.

I'm not saying that intergration is straight forward- far from it. There may be things that need to be spoken about more directly. But I do think it's a tough call because it does so easily spiral into and fuel paranoia, racism and violence. There have been people in Calais deliberately driving into refugees to kill them like dogs.

I don't understand why we would take women over men. Are women's lives worth more? I'm a feminist, I want equality - not in my name.

venusinscorpio · 10/01/2016 22:47

Totally agree with Rustique and Longway.

venusinscorpio · 10/01/2016 22:48

Well said 2016, I quite agree.

MariscallRoad · 10/01/2016 22:59

It is a very interesting thread with many points of view converging to several focuses and I will be writing to my MP on that. I will be watching the thread for an e-petition. Or it might be more than one petition perhaps.

Pinkchampchoccies · 10/01/2016 23:00

This thread is pretty fucked, the next one will be better and it will be without emily and twisted.

For now, lets just try and learn from these spin doctors and ask ourselves, who would benefit from what they are doing.

"But why was it published then?

What was its purpose?"

That is sadly obvious. Targeted at the young female reader (Bridget Jones undertones) to reiterate how harmless ME migrants are. I was reminded of the theme tune of my pet and me.

hiddenhome2 · 10/01/2016 23:01

How would an e-petition be worded?

hiddenhome2 · 10/01/2016 23:03

How are you going to get rid of emily and twisted Pink?

RufusTheReindeer · 10/01/2016 23:04

I've reported emily

I assume others have

Has she gone?

Werksallhourz · 10/01/2016 23:04

I will challenge racism and those that use women's rights to further a far right agenda and I will not be intimidated.

What you seem to fail to understand is that the ground has shifted massively and you have been left behind by changing political dynamics.

To all intents and purposes, those men that committed mass sexual assault in Cologne ARE the far right -- they are just the far right of other countries.

Open your eyes, Emily. Those men weren't bloody liberals, were they? All this debate about Middle Eastern and/or Muslim culture ignores one vitally important issue: that there are liberal and humanist modes of thought throughout the Middle East and within Islam, and there always have been. This is why many Middle-Easterners and/or Muslims would never behave in the manner seen in Cologne. Crikey, it would never even enter their heads to behave in such a fashion.

So why did these men? Because they subscribe to an authoritarian, patriarchal and racist dogma that sees fit to challenge police authority and violently target citizens who are not of their group nor whom adhere to their beliefs.

If you took away the supposed ethnic markers of these men, you would see the incident for what it actually is: a far-right attack upon liberal European women and liberal values.

You are using "challenging racism" to defend far right attitudes and beliefs, and you don't even realise it.

hiddenhome2 · 10/01/2016 23:05

She never goes away Rufus like herpes Confused

TwistedReach · 10/01/2016 23:07

I'd like to know too!
To be honest I probably won't have the energy for another thread. So you will I expect, finally be safe without me wanting to think about why bad things happen.

Cellardoor1 · 10/01/2016 23:07

here is an interesting article from the New York Times

emilybohemia · 10/01/2016 23:07

Hi twisted. It is sad.

The issues are very complex but I think we need to see people first and foremost as individuals and not just as an ethnicity or representation of a culture. Blanket generalisations help noone.

The way the people at Calais are treated is horrific. One day you will look back and you will know what you did to help them. Like many people you will probably say, 'It was nothing' but you will be remembered and you will be treasured by the people you have helped.

"I've reported emily' hell yeah."

"I probably won't have the energy for another thread. So you will I expect, finally be safe without me wanting to think about why bad things happen."

Good.

travellingpeople · 10/01/2016 23:12

I joined mumsnet because of this
You know,it doesnt really matter if these men were arabs/clangers/scottish gingers/smurfs
After distilling this, the main thing is that women could not stop this happening and were severely sexually assaulted
The police/government did not or could not provide safety for their citizens
We women are unarmed
We have by concensus given this up as law enforcement have agreed to provide safety to citizens
Big effing fail eh boyhos?

"As long as I remember, the fisher girls, who follow the herring round our coasts and who are brought by that employment into some of the worst quarters in Britain, always carried with them their sharp gutting knives; and they were always left severely 698 alone by everybody. They passed unscathed through the worst quarters, because everybody knew that they were perfectly ready to use, those knives if they were molested. I believe the recent sobriety of the country and the knowledge that the girls are not to be touched with impunity has led to a discontinuance of that practice, but if any fisher girls were molested again you would find exactly the same remedy being invoked."

I have a daughter and have given her good advice on how to keep her self safe.No advice can help her in a situation such as Cologne
If the men involved thought that the women were armed with knives, maybe it would have made them think twice
If this happens in the uk,I will assume that the social contract is broken, and
will be arming my daughter so that she can protect herself.

hiddenhome2 · 10/01/2016 23:12

Well said Werk Shock bloody well said. Never looked at it from that angle before.

WildeWoman · 10/01/2016 23:12

During the past 7 days of reading this thread, one video disturbed me above no other. Someone linked on maybe the first thread to a twitter feed. There was a video there of a guy talking about having gang raped a German virgin. He was very adamant that she was a virgin. 7 men. Arab men. One German innocent girl.

It is very hard to watch that and have SYMPATHY for the perpetrators of the NYEs attacks.

I have no sympathy. I only have sympathy for the girls who feel violated, debased, degraded, frightened, inferior, raped, assaulted, hurt, sad, depressed, claustrophobic.

That was the intention of these poor little immigrants. They achieved their goal.

They may have won a battle, but they won't fucking win the WAR. If I have to write you personalised emails each, these bastards will not WIN THE WAR.

Pinkchampchoccies · 10/01/2016 23:14

"Pink The chap who was shot in Paris was Syrian!? I'm really surprised, always thought the Syrians were more levelheaded. But I guess the bombing of his country was too much for him to bear."

Apologies, he is likely to be Tunisian as it turns out but was using a Syrian ID when attacking the police.

emilybohemia · 10/01/2016 23:15

'That is sadly obvious. Targeted at the young female reader (Bridget Jones undertones) to reiterate how harmless ME migrants are'.

He wasn't a migrant. Can we use the right term? He was a refugee. Most of them are harmless.

Pinkchampchoccies · 10/01/2016 23:16

Wild, you don't need to have sympathy and you don't need to justify yourself. Twisted and emily have succeded in guilt tripping and manipulating us, just like the Guardian does. They will soon be gone.
