Keeping this in the spotlight since the mainstream media isn't.

If you offer asylum to anybody, without differentiating between those at risk and those who pose a risk you're just going to end up importing what those most at risk are running from. And then you haven't given asylum to anybody, you've just put a whole lot more people at risk.

The most concise articulation of what I have been trying to express for the past week! Thank you!!

emilybohemia · 10/01/2016 19:57

DeeDee, Isis do want anti Muslim feeling in the West and anti refugee feeling. They hate them for leaving and getting to Europe.

I suppose Einstein, it is seeing the differences but not making blanket statements when we don't really know enough to make an assumption. There are things I don't know enough about, including what you state about disability and how people are treated in some places. That is very sad. I think at times I have made assumptions about things that I was ignorant of. How can people be bothered by the sight of disabled people eating! That makes my blood boil.

WildeWoman · 10/01/2016 19:57

Abetadad probably works for the guardian in that case Bill.

I read an interesting piece from an ex cologne policeman responsible for policing the train station area.

He made a point about the general area, that it is a magnet for petty crime (which I have also previously said), homelessness, drugs and anti social behaviour. And he also says that it is absolutely not a secret that the main problem group in the area is migrants (which I have also seen myself).

Now, I'm obviously not saying all migrants are criminal, or that all criminals are migrants. I also think it is obvious that when you get a large amount of poor, jobless, homeless young men with nothing to do and nothing to lose you are going to end up with a crime problem, whether they are migrants, neo nazis or the local criminal underclass.

Unless and until we can ensure that every migrant coming to Germany can be kept gainfully occupied, has no criminal past and is unlikely to commit crime here, I would like to see numbers curtailed. Allowing the influx whilst failing to protect local citizens against robbery and assault simply shouldn't be allowed to happen.

True Will -another can of some opened--.

The Guardian = Stammtisch

I have read the last Guardian article that was linked to upthread and have realised that the Guardian level of reporting is on the same intellectual levels as a Stammtisch discussion.

"The words "Stammtischpolitik" (Stammtisch politics) and "Stammtischniveau" (Stammtisch level), describe the simplified nature of Stammtisch discussions, and have an established metaphorical usage in describing simplified political and social discussions beyond the Stammtisch itself." This was usually reserved for right of centre discussion but the Guardian absolutely reports on this simplistic level. Shocking, if I hadn't learned to expect it.

Your statement Bill, is now my Facebook status.

I completely agree.

Pinkchampchoccies · 10/01/2016 20:03

strike through fail Blush another can of worms opened.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 10/01/2016 20:03

I don't see why families are not encouraged more, pp have been saying for ages, why so many young men, where are their families.

The job of the government of any country is to first and foremost, protect its citizens.

There have been absolutely no checks on those Merkel has allowed in, many open letters have been published from different departments crying out for help, saying they cannot cope, they cannot check people properly, even to make sure they are syrian.

Then we had Paris attacks and now we have this.

And....the worst thing is - how on this earth does this - help the true refugees.

They are even more under threat and its this that drives me mad.

Its so stupid.

If proper admittance system and checks done, it protects them. People wont fear them as much.

onthephone100 · 10/01/2016 20:06

When I went to the DomPlatz yesterday the numbers of migrant homeless were about equal male and female.

I would certainly limit the number of fit young men coming into Germany as asylum seekers if it meant more resources to help some of the women I saw. My god they were in a shocking state. They looked in their 50s or 60s, not even a plastic bag of possessions with them, slumped against the side of the cathedral clutching a dirty styrofoam cup to beg with.

They are the ones I want to welcome with open arms, a hot shower and a square meal. Not those raping scumbags.

onthephone100 · 10/01/2016 20:09

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

There was NOTHING to stop one, just one, of the crowd being armed on NYE. No checks, no police, no intel.

There would have been scores killed. Scores.

That's why I'm staying at home for Karneval.

Pinkchampchoccies · 10/01/2016 20:10

Will what you say regarding refuges makes a lot of sense.

Cellardoor1 · 10/01/2016 20:12

"Cellar, as far as I can see from the reporting in the Guardian today, they are slanting the reporting to say that it was a series of robberies, some of which may have included some incidental sexual assaults which don't really matter, because apparently sexual assaults done for the purpose of robbery are a lot less serious."

I don't think 40% reporting sexual assaults can be described as 'incidental' Hmm

I haven't had a chance to read that much today but as far as I can see the German authorities are now conceding that these were preplanned events. Doesn't really tally with the guardians position of opportunistic robberies with a dash of sexual assault. I wonder how long they can keep the pretence up.

2016IsANewYearforMe · 10/01/2016 20:46

Bravo BillSykes, some really clear thinking that I hadn't heard before.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 10/01/2016 20:51

And then you haven't given asylum to anybody, you've just put a whole lot more people at risk

YY sorry had not read all thread I totally agree and it ties in with my comment how pp will fear ALL ALL ALL refugees even more now Sad.

Its all handing a gift to far right groups isnt it.

emilybohemia · 10/01/2016 20:54

My feathers are fine help. It's you whose imagination seems to be running away with you. 'Gave myself away?' It's mumsnet, chill.

Olivepip59 · 10/01/2016 20:59

There have been some wonderful contributions here which are helping me focus my ideas.

Some thoughts on what I want to say to my MP.

I would like you to make the necessary motions/open discussions/meet with appropriate ministers/lobby/establish working groups, whatever to assure me that:

Refugee policy will focus on bringing to safety the truly vulnerable women, children and old people.

Economic migrant males will be issued with booklets/classes/phone apps (?) explaining that women are of equal status in our country and that they are shown the same respect as men.

Graphic explanations of what behaviour is unacceptable, verbal and physical.

This training/info to be delivered by as diverse a range of instructors as possible, giving focus to the message rather than the tutor.

Draconian, well-publicised immediate deportations of anyone who behaves inappropriately towards any fellow citizen.

Classes for immigrant women explaining what is unacceptable behaviour in their new home (I know some sterling work is being done in this area already).

I don't know how realistic these suggestions are, so open to discuss.

DespicableBee · 10/01/2016 21:09

Sounds good, Olivepip59,
I really like the point on concentrating on women, children migrants

"Little point in debating with the two individuals. They are experienced provocateurs who want this thread to end thru our exasperation. I recognise the tactics used in studio TV and radio debates."

I agree with you.

Pinkchampchoccies · 10/01/2016 21:15

Ego I know.

I honestly think the quickest thing we can all agree on is to launch some sort of shame the guardian campaign.

Pinkchampchoccies · 10/01/2016 21:16

There should be enough disgruntled guardian readers to happily share on FB/TW something that isn't too focused on migrants but on minimising and gas lighting. Any ideas?

emilybohemia · 10/01/2016 21:17

Can men not be vulnerable OlivePip? Seems a bit sexist to me.
