Just in case people want to continue discussing this.

OP posts:

You can get things debated in parliament with 100,000 signatures.

KERALA1 · 09/01/2016 17:02

Fantasising about a Europe wide strike by the majority of women of both paid and unpaid labour if our rights are sacrificed and freedoms compromised to appease Islamic rights.

Justanotherlurker · 09/01/2016 17:03

The reason why the water canon was used today was because they where expecting trouble (and got it), they where state police (they don't fuck around) and they massively outnumbered the protesters.

You cannot compare the two scenarios, when dealing with pegdia and self proclaimed hooligans in a pre planned march they will bring out the water canon.

Olivepip59 · 09/01/2016 17:06

hidden I felt like you until this and the previous thread.

I have been branded a right-wing racist (ironic if you knew me) by many during previous discussions on this subject.

I felt like the boy shouting 'but he's got no clothes on' as those about me called for uncontrolled immigration, explaining how disgusting I was for worrying that young men from a culture I know intimately might find it hard to assimilate into our western traditions.

But now I feel hope.

And slightly Confused at the water canon and draconian presence which was so sorely lacking six nights ago.

polentapies · 09/01/2016 17:07

I can compare the two scenarios

The NYW attack went on for hours Just. If it had been a terrorist event with weapons rather the 'cultural terrorism' as it has been called, you can bet your life that the police would have been mobilised very quickly. There is a reason that they weren't

carlajean · 09/01/2016 17:07

I'm always getting emails from 38 Degrees (seems to be an effective petition creating website). Anyone can put forward suggestions for a petition to them. Does anyone feel like having a go, posting a link, and we could sign? (Though I suspect they're too left wing to accept it, it would be worthwhile having a go)

MamaMary · 09/01/2016 17:09

Just wanted to add my support and thanks for this thread.

A 2016 logo in suffragette colours, with O as the female symbol, sounds like a good logo, for a much-needed campaign. Come on, women, we are 50 % of the electorate and need to start shouting a bit louder.

I'm not on Twitter but a good hashtag or two might also be required - something like : #Don'terodewomen'srights

LumelaMme · 09/01/2016 17:09

Help, I agree with a lot of what you say, but you seem to be generalising here:
Truth is, they have no finer sensibilities at all
Or have I got the wrong end go the stick and were you just referring to the misogynistic gems who catcall and grope? I have no idea if they are a 'majority' of the migrants. I really, really, hope they aren't.

Olivepip59 · 09/01/2016 17:09

Leading on R4 news now

LumelaMme · 09/01/2016 17:11

KERALA, are you familiar with the story of Lysistrata?

hiddenhome2 · 09/01/2016 17:11

Indeed, wait until they find out they can visit the local pool and sauna Sad

Constancegardner · 09/01/2016 17:12

Sadly, I think we've been allowing misogynists to get away with banning free speech for a few years now, I'm thinking of the universities which have cancelled talks by Germaine Greer and Maryam Namazie because of vocal opposition by what is, after all, a minority. A vocal, and easily offended group of men seem to have become very powerful in certain sectors and have become successful in closing down debate. We have become afraid of offending people yet some people seem offended by so much, even everyday life in the West seems offensive.

We have become passive in so many areas. This allows so many wrong things to happen unremarked and people that do shout up are branded with certain words and marginalised, oddly enough I'm thinking here of an anti-fracking campaigner who was detained under the terrorism act, deeply disturbing for free speech.

I don't know what the answer is, I'm not sure the system we have is representative of many but it's what we have got. Look at the amount of coverage this has received now, because women in Germany spoke up and we listened and have spoken too.
Boring, time consuming and often seemingly fruitless, we must keep talking, write to various bodies when we see our rights being eroded, etc or we risk sliding back in time.

Just reflecting. Who does the left represent these days?

hefzi · 09/01/2016 17:15

^^ Not me, that's for sure!

hiddenhome2 · 09/01/2016 17:18

I find the Left quite sinister tbh. I have no idea what their aims are, but I don't feel it's in our best interests. They've lost sight of what they're for and who they should be representing.

iamnotaponceyloudperson · 09/01/2016 17:18

Wow I've just been on a 6 hour train journey and read these threads. It is truly overwhelming to think about the possible implications and then to think of the silence in real life as well as in the media. I think this genuinely scares people into burying their heads in the sand. I fear our politicians and media is woefully inadequate.

One question, I was pretty shocked to find that this isn't a discussion of the day and I haven't noticed it even trending in the long period I've been on mumsnet today......admittedly I came very late to it but have I missed something?

DogStrummer · 09/01/2016 17:20

Just reflecting. Who does the left represent these days?

Nice segregated meeting here. That they are prepared to tolerate this, tells me everything I need to know.

As mentioned earlier on this thread, we risk going back in time 200 years. No going back. No way!

Justanotherlurker · 09/01/2016 17:27

A vocal, and easily offended group of men seem to have become very powerful in certain sectors

I would take a closer look at who is doing banning or no platforming of free speach in universities, or behind the majority of socail media storms, it isn't men in my view.

2016IsANewYearforMe · 09/01/2016 17:30

Who is it?

Olivepip59 · 09/01/2016 17:30

vocal opposition by what is, after all, a minority. A vocal, and easily offended group of men seem to have become very powerful in certain sectors and have become successful in closing down debate

I think some of it is apathy; the drive to promote certain beliefs and cultures is a driving force to many to an extent that would shock the average tolerant-but-not-that-arsed British citizen.

Partly ignorance: a well-meaning acquaintance who made a huge fuss about removing the pork sausages from a buffet that a Sikh colleague was attending, demanding we check the meat was Halal, which anyone claiming such cultural sophistication should know, is forbidden to Sikhs.

I was reminded of 1984. even then; there was a sinister quality to her stupidity and the sheep-like horror of other colleagues and rush to de-sausage the table.

And I think that virtue-signalling is the third element. I have used the phrase moral hard-on before. I believe that many fellow citizens, particularly those who have limited experience of actually living in other cultures get a huge rush telling the rest of us we are racist and small-minded.

speakergirl · 09/01/2016 17:33

I guess safe spaces are ok when it benefits certain people

LumelaMme · 09/01/2016 17:33

hefzi and carla, I have pm'ed you my letter to my MP.

Happy to pm anyone else who wants something to work from/use.

Also happy to post my FB comment (it was rather long) in case anyone wants to share it.

What does the left represent these days?
Dunno. It makes me sad: I used to canvass for Labour, but I haven't voted for them for years. That meeting picture depresses me utterly.

LongWayRound · 09/01/2016 17:33

Like iamnot, I also find it strange that this thread is not listed in Discussions of the day. It has more posts than any other thread currently in the Active list.

Constancegardner · 09/01/2016 17:34

Yes, sorry, not just men. Plenty of women too willing to use the freedoms won by women (and men) to close us down.
