Just in case people want to continue discussing this.

'This is OUR culture. Our values. Our principles. Our way of life.'

Well said WildeWoman.

fidel1ne · 08/01/2016 19:20

So can you cite recent examples in western cultures or can't you Ego?

MamaMary · 08/01/2016 19:27

I cannot believe the mayor of Vienna has said women should not go out alone at night! Does someone have a link for this ?

This has made me angrier than a lot of stuff I've read on this thread (and the last). For a public representative to state this.... unbelievable. I know Austria is a conservative society, but come on !!

Does he realise that many of the women in Cologne were NOT alone and had their boyfriends/ husbands/ male friends with them?

WildeWoman · 08/01/2016 19:28

I wonder whether we could enable women who arrive here? I can't see much hope in trying to re-program men. Maybe our fellow ladies are the place to start.

We have to address all of these issues though. Otherwise, our society, as we know it, is FUCKED!

Top three stories on BBC news, all Islamic extremism. FFS what's wrong with the world.

I did think years ago much of the world was storing up trouble for itself with the way boys/men are treated compared to girls and the disproportionate amount of males compared to females. I think the influx of young men is an example of the misogyny in there own nations, women/children can just be abandoned and left behind.

"Hopefully there will be a referendum shortly, that will allow British citizens to decide whether this sort of thing is acceptable"

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Interesting (!?) article here from Corriere della Sera (Italian newspaper).

They make no apologies about their views!
“Town with a history of Western culture and deep-rooted Christian traditions. Those who do not respect local culture and traditions are asked to leave”

Leave it all to the Italians haha!

claig · 08/01/2016 19:39

"I cannot believe the mayor of Vienna has said women should not go out alone at night! Does someone have a link for this ?"

"Vienna's police chief has has caused outrage by advising women in the wake of sex attacks over New Year not to go out on the streets alone in Austria.

The astonishing claims by Gerhard Purstl were made as it was revealed Austria also had cases registered in which women claimed to have been sexually assaulted by men who were described by their victims as being immigrants."

Ego

It is SO important that we recognise that what happened on NYE is of a completely different nature to DV, 'ordinary' sexual offending etc.

There are a great many people (such as yourself) keen to minimize acts of terror and pretend they are of the same ilk as other criminality. But they aren't - the motivation, intent and planning is different and so the solution is different.

Meanwhile women's bodies become the battlefield on which wars are being fought. I don't understand the desire to minimize that.

(And if you want people to be elaborately polite to you don't do the snotty 'if you'd read my post properly' shnizzle.)

I don't wish to see an end to political correctness. As i said many times on this thread we all benefit from a code of conduct which discourages derogatory remarks or humiliation based on race, gender or ability. I feel a degree of political correctness is and integral part of living in a diverse society. But I think religious sentiment or other ideologies should be 100% open to debate and 100% open for criticism. We must be able to rely on our laws and on our police to protect the laws.

And never should the fear of appearing racist, sexist or whatever stand in the way of tackling crime. People ought to be a able to describe potential criminals and refer to their appearance and perceived race or ethnicity if this will help identify perpetrators.

Pinkchampchoccies · 08/01/2016 19:47

"Leave it all to the Italians haha!"

Mhm.... Now Italy is another country where catcalling and unwanted attention from males is rather prevalent, especially but not only if you are blonde.

OP posts:
onthephone100 · 08/01/2016 19:50

Political correctness is NOT to blame here.

Fear of being called racist is NOT the same as political correctness.

We all benefit from PC.

onthephone100 · 08/01/2016 19:51

Yeah the Italians really know how to do respect to women! Old Silvio really blazed a trail there.... Hmm

The original purveyors of the Madonna/whore dichotomy...

WildeWoman · 08/01/2016 19:51

Basically Ego, you cannot equate 1000 lone sexual assaults, perpetrated by 1000 randomers to 1000 men perpetrating sexual assault en masse, at the same time. Can you acknowledge that?

These people know that we value our modern society. We, particularly women, and men (!), value our relative equality. THEY hate this. THEY want to attack this. THEY want to show US how disgusting (to them) our way of life is.

This is nothing like your usual sexual violence. This is extreme, organised, calculated acts aimed at attacking one of the very best elements of our Western culture.

The women victimised here were purely random. They were quite simply - Western women. There was no sexual motivation. This was a 'FUCK YOU' to US. This was a 'FUCK YOU' to our society. This was an indication of what they hope will come to US.

Well.......... They have their shite! Because WE will not fucking stand for it.

fidel1ne · 08/01/2016 19:52

Ego the whole substance of your post, of your snotty reply to me (in which you missed the point that the events of NYE were ORGANISED and POLITICIZED sexual violence) and of your follow up post, was to deny that there is any significant difference between these events and DV and rape as they happen individually in European context.

THAT is minimizing the events of NYE.

We must stop doing that.

We need to be able to discuss all of this clearly and intelligently without the weird bien pensant attitude that immigrants can never be criticized, no matter what.

DawnMumsnet · 08/01/2016 19:52

Evening all,

Apologies for the interruption. We just wanted to clarify that nobody has been "thrown off the site" as a result of this thread.

We received a number of reports about some posts on the previous thread and when we checked things out, we could see what appeared to be some sock puppeting going on. This is in breach of our Talk Guidelines, and so we followed our usual protocol and temporarily suspended several accounts. We've mailed the poster/s in question, and are happy to discuss the matter with them.

This is a hugely important topic and we're keen for this discussion to continue, with minimal intervention from us. We're really not trying to silence anyone or stifle debate.

Many thanks.

evilcherub · 08/01/2016 19:52

Sorry. I was not trying to downplay it. I am as angry as the next woman. The way I see it is that nothing will be done because it has become such a big taboo to name the "elephant in the room" (which is the misogynistic culture unfortunately of most of the Arab and Islamic countries) and none of the leaders of any EU countries want to call a spade a spade (except some of the Eastern European countries which have already been accused of being Nazis/xenophobes for not wanting to have foreign cultures imposed on them).

If Cameron or Merkel will not do something (apart from mumbling a few harsh words), then women will have to take their safety into their own hands. I see it as being proactive. Of course one woman can't fight off a group of men but at least equip them with some power to fight back (not be seen as meek and subservient which is what they presumably imagine women to be)?
