New thread as part 2 is nearly full.

Part 1 is here.

Part 1 was started when 3 Israeli boys were found murdered.

Part 2 is here.

In part 2 we mainly discussed the legality and human consequences of Operation Protective Edge.

Ooh, goody, an Islamphobic website! Thanks for linking to that bit of hate speech, "IsraeliArab".

AishaHosseini · 30/07/2014 20:02

Reigning queen, what happens if I attack Jewish on here? will something change? will there be magic and shelter appear for my people there?
I hate the zionist I wish they would leave Gaza but when you go there and see that Hamas does not want to stop fighting, israil will never stop fighting too.
it is so easy for you all here, have you even been to Gaza?

IsraeliArab · 30/07/2014 20:03

A zionist is a person who supports the right of Israel to exist. I just mention this because I saw it used almost as a pejorative in an earlier post.

Those of you who seem to demonise Israel, which you are doing with the language you use, those of you who condemn Israel's right to defend itself, you are clearly against the existence of Israel. I don't see you saying the same things about other countries and regimes which do far, far worse and not in self defence. Which makes you....hypocrites.

Backinthering · 30/07/2014 20:03

lk14 2 million Brits marched to protest the Iraq war, because we didn't want another nation attacked on spurious pretexts. Almost no-one supported that, or believed the bullshit.
Pity the Israelis can't make a similar statement about the actions of their government.

Part 2 of this thread discussed how Jewish and Arab children are taught about the conflict in Israeli schools. See for example the post by AndHarry Tue 22-Jul-14 12:29:25. You might be just the person to enlighten us about this. I would be really interested to hear about how Jewish and Arab children learn about the history of the conflict, and if they ever get to meet each other.

The impression I get from talking to my dad (originally from Israel, lived in the UK most of his adult life but visits every year) is that the Arabs in Israel live largely separate lives. They tend to go to different schools and live in different areas, although they may mix at work or university, for example. I don't think Arabic is a compulsory subject at school, which is a shame. How have you found life to be as an Israeli Arab (or is Palestinian citzen of Israel the preferred term?) I think in some ways the situation is better than countries such as Lebanon, where third-generation Palestinian refugees are barred from entering many professions. But although on paper the Arab citizens of Israel have equal rights, I understand that they face much discrimination, not to mention the recent anti-Arab demonstrations and racism. How have you found life in Israel to be during this time?

WasabiMonster · 30/07/2014 20:06

ik14 many, many British people did not support the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan, there was a huge demonstration against the war in Iraq. So you may want to check your facts before making such blanket accusations. And I thought this current conflict started after the abduction and murder of the 3 israeli men, then it suddenly became about the tunnels. Make your mind up.

sherazade · 30/07/2014 20:08

Read my history? I have roots in palestine , jordan and syria and both my parents are refugees and I've been debating this cause on mumsnet for the past five years. Take your fateh bullshit somewhere else.

timbucktoo · 30/07/2014 20:08

First it was the issue of missiles being fired now its because of tunnels, Israel have known the tunnels existed for years. Why don't they bomb outside Gaza, if they want to destroy the tunnels?

I heard someone speak recently who was involved in efforts to come up with an agreed history textbook for use in Israeli and Palestinian schools. She said that there were months and months of negotiations, but that the commission simply could not come up with a text agreeable to both sides. It was decided in the end to print two parallel histories in text boxes on the same page, one from the Israeli perspective, one from the Palestinian. Obviously not perfect, but the hope was that if the texts were right beside each other, at least students would have the chance to read and learn about the position of the 'other side'.

Springheeled · 30/07/2014 20:10

Probably today is a bit of a turning point and Zionists are running scared. With 44% of Gaza now under Israel again, and 56% left to go, they're just making too many blunders with their precision weapons and their arguments are wearing just a little too thin.

Still, shares in drone are well up. Time to invest in global capitalism's ruiniation of humanity!

On another note, has anyone checked out the labour and Tory 'friends of Israel' membership? It doesn't surprise me that so many labour MPs are on the list, especially those who came through the student politics route, such as Jim Murphy, but it did make me wonder whether any of them have reassessed their 'friendship' in the last couple of weeks- maybe they should be asked?

British people would not have supported indiscriminate bombing and carnage against defenceless people on the scale that Israel is wreaking. British soldiers who committed crimes werevtried and punished. Has any Israeli soldier ever faced prosecution in their own country for human rights abuses?

Yep, as backinthering says, over a million marched against the war, opinion was consistently against it, Blair made himself such a pariah over it forever more that every time he opens his mouth these days the whole nation pukes, and a considerable number of British people would dearly love to see him eventually stand trial for war crimes.

So hmmm I'm not sure where you get the idea that action in Iraq and Afghanistan had public support.

somewheresafe · 30/07/2014 20:18

There is a chance we can salvage the thread if we don't feed the trolls.

Sarahs123 can you please go back and read all three threads on this subject? That way you may learn something - you are bringing nothing new to the table. And you may want to get your news from somewhere other than IDF and Israeli government propaganda.

I agree somewheresafe. Let's get this thread back to some normality.
