A new thread following on from the previous one in Chat here

OP posts:
nauticant · 22/07/2014 10:00

I'm glad you posted scandip. Among other things I see on this thread and the predecessor are that liberal values have "caused the problem of abuse" and should be rolled back.

So when do we go back to, the 1950s, the 1920s, Victorian times? However much some people don't want to acknowledge it, sexual abuse of children was rife in those times. There was no Golden Age.

I think one cause of the "massive surge" in such abuse is that for the first time ever, it's becoming acceptable for victims to come forward and not be automatically disbelieved or blamed. And to be honest I think that's down to liberal rather than Victorian values.

Suzannewithaplan · 22/07/2014 10:47

I agree, I'm broadly in favour of liberal values, I don't think that sexual depravity is a recent thing, nor can it be attributed to any simple cause, some humans are prone to evil and corruption, it takes constant work to thwart this.

Predators are opportunistic and will work any situation, any political, ideological, cultural or economic climate to their own advantage.

Blaming the internet is too simplistic, there is never one cause, always multiple factors which interact in complex ways

unrealhousewife · 22/07/2014 15:33

scandip I appreciate your apologies. It's fine. I talk at people sometimes too!

My arguments are for a different thread. I'm not happy with current restrictions on the internet that's all.

unrealhousewife · 22/07/2014 15:39

The Waterhouse report found no evidence of a paedophile ring beyond the care system but in April 2013 further allegations were made of wider child abuse.

As a result, Operation Pallial was set up initially to examine potential evidence. It has now become a full-blown criminal investigation.

Does this mean that as long as it happens within the care system then it's not criminal? What do they mean when they say the police investigation has 'primacy'?

I don't understand this relationship between police investigations and inquiries.

Placing a footprint on this thread - thanks for starting it, stand - but having to limit my involvement for a few days as it seems to be affecting my mental health.

GarlicJulyKit · 22/07/2014 16:43

XH1 and I were stopped at Dover in 1989 for some porn he'd smuggled in from Amsterdam. The joy of waiting in the cold for hours while my car was dismantled, and discovering I was married to a lying criminal arsehole, is its own story. The customs men told me the material he'd bought was borderline illegal in Britain and I wouldn't like it, but they let him keep it. Customs said they were specifically looking for violent child porn. This shows they were getting information and acting on it. But we've never seen swathes of high-level arrests over this before, let alone convictions. So either Customs don't get enough information, or something prevents the prosecutions happening. I suppose this must relate to those frustrating accounts linked on the last thread, where police got close to the perpetrators, but were stymied by international rules & regs ... which look very convenient for anyone looking after the perps' interests.

The Mafia used to use interstate police lines to avoid arrest in America, didn't they? If a keen cop was getting too close, they'd pop over to another state with tamer governors, or have the cop transferred.

GarlicJulyKit · 22/07/2014 16:45

Oh, Kate, I'm so pleased survivors are gaining confidence!

IorekByrnisonsArmour · 22/07/2014 19:08

I have signed the petition.

Thanks for the link Kate

creekyknees · 22/07/2014 20:04

Wasnt it William Hague who was involved in the Waterhouse inquiry?

Makes you wonder why he is retiring early especially if this is all going to get looked at again Hmm

scandip · 22/07/2014 20:07

Good news that more people feel they can come forward and be believed.

Take care of yourself Garlic. You are an intelligent lady and it is great to read your comments.

Exactly, so why was this not taken into consideration before borders were opened Angry.

SweetSummerSweetPea · 22/07/2014 21:25

The National Criminal Intelligence Service, which registers and monitors the activities of paedophiles, has warned that the scale of the problem is on a level with sex tourism

Shock
SweetSummerSweetPea · 22/07/2014 21:30

In the Sun, describing himself as the "Godfather", who "fixed" things. Telling Lynn Barber in an interview for the Independent that getting a knighthood was "a relief", that it got him "off the hook" [hmmm]

yes of course but one can imagine how its been set on fire, now pedos can chat to each other, pass things to each other and link up, globally. at all levels.

Children in the philipines are being used to film acts for a global paying audience, and I am sure from many other countries. All you need is a computer and the internet and a camera.

SweetSummerSweetPea · 25/07/2014 15:34

I think this thread has died a death as thought. And moved the issue off the main boards.

Wannabestepfordwife · 25/07/2014 16:25

I think as there is a lot going on in the news and the stories have slowed down a lot of people do care but just don't want to digging themselves.

cfskate thank you for all the links the one on aid agencies reminded me of this [http://english.cri.cn/6966/2010/01/23/1321s544687.htm]

Whitershadeofpale · 25/07/2014 16:31

I think the lack of interest is making it difficult to keep going. There's only so many times we can say how shocked and disgusted we are and MNHQ have made it obvious they're not interested in using their influence to fight for justice for these poor children.

Wannabestepfordwife · 25/07/2014 16:40

It makes me quite ashamed to be British tbh everyone is up in arms for what a week and them no-one seems interested anymore. The Belgians really do put us to shame

applecatchers36 · 25/07/2014 19:22

There was a segment on the Today programme this morning about abuse in Lambeth children's homes in the 1970's and 1980's I think it is still being investigated but perhaps the air disaster ..Palestine/ Israeli conflict is getting all the news ATM...I also think the news are being cautious after Lord McApline libel situation...[hmmm]

Scaredycat3000 · 26/07/2014 23:07

I'm still reading. I have nothing relevant to post, but I'm still reading. I can't read to much on this. I read to much on the Watkins case and had to stop, it messes with your head, not sleeping, nightmares, and I've had a good life. I keep up with stuff making sure I haven't missed anything by reading these threads.
Keep posting, we are here.
