Morning all. Yeah, I wasn't sure about posting that, my finger hovered over the button for a while. I don't want to purposely upset people, but the reality of a war zone is hard to comprehend unless you've been there. Talking about Bosnia is a derailment, but tbh I can see many similarities with Russia/Ukraine and FRY.
It seems so easy, I suppose it should be easy really. There has been this terrible tragedy, innocent lives have been caught up in it, why wouldn't we be able to just go there and pick up the pieces? Someone up thread compared it to Lockerbie, and I can understand why - a plane has fallen out of the sky and decent people should want to help the bereaved. But it's not like that. You'll have the rival leaders (rival countries in this case) not wanting 'outsiders' come into their territory. They will also not want the truth about the attack coming out - although both will know exactly who was to blame. You'll have locals not wanting to get involved because of reprisals. You'll have other locals bitter that the rest of the world only wants to get involved now the 'rich people' (who can afford plane travel) have been hurt. You'll have the local who has lost sons/daughters wondering why his loss isn't as important, the person who thinks death is the end, not the funeral and the person who clings to hope that missing doesnt mean dead. You may even have the 'owner' of the land the plane has destroyed wanting compensation, or not giving permission for investigators/journalists/families to enter to cover up their own nefarious deeds or to ensure that the crop/animals that were supposed to feed his family aren't lost.
Add to all that people shooting at each other, laying mines and trip wires, discarding grenades for kids to find, committing war crimes and hiding bodies and it's a whole new ball game.
All that has to be accounted for and it takes time. Bosnia was particularly bad for that and Ukraine will be the same. There are still bodies being uncovered there, 20 years on. I hope against hope that it will not be the case for the families of the 298, but think it is likely to drag on for quite some time.
