Part 2: Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Starting a new thread as the original is almost full.

The original thread is here. It was started on 1st July after three Israeli boys were found murdered, before the murder of the Palestinian boy and the resumption of sustained rocket attacks and Operation Protective edge.

There are lots of excellent posts and links in the original thread showcasing a variety of views. The main consensus was that there is fault on both sides. We also considered various options for people on both sides of the conflict to work towards a lasting peace.

His reporting has restored my faith in journalistic integrity. Seeing Dr gilbert treat the injured and dying palestinians actually brought a tear to my eye.

Last night he stated that caging an entire population and then bombing them knowing they have absolutely nowhere to go is terrible.

edamsavestheday · 22/07/2014 20:19

Jon Snow is excellent. Unbiased and compelling.

wordsmithsforever · 22/07/2014 20:53

Just watched the interview - oh my word - thank you Jon Snow for asking Mark Regev all the tough questions! What an excellent interview. See www.channel4.com/news/the-israeli-military-does-not-target-civilians-video

PigletJohn · 22/07/2014 22:18

Let's be clear, Jon did ask some good questions, but lets be clear, it's not Mark's job to give truthful answers, so, let's be clear, he avoided them.

Let's be clear he would not (could not) give a good answer to why his navy fires shells at children playing on a beach, he could not give a good answer to why his air force bombs a hospital in the middle of the night, he could not deny that the effect of his nation's acts of war is predominantly to kill non-combatants, he attempted unsuccessfully to bluster away the question of war crimes by his nation, and, let's be clear, he claimed that all the parties has been involved in the imaginary ceasefire talks but, let's be clear, he could not give a good answer to why "all the parties" does not include Hamas.

Let's be clear, he has a difficult job to divert incoming questions when there is no good answer available, to avoid the truth, and he did that job, let's be clear, as far as he was able.

toodles · 22/07/2014 22:26

Haha PigletJohn. I got sick of the 'Let's be clear's too. What an awful arrogant man. Jon Snow - fantastic, also a news presenter on AlJazeera interviewing him yesterday, but I don't remember his name.

edamsavestheday · 22/07/2014 22:42

There's some Youtube footage going round of an Al Jazeera reporter doing a piece to camera from Gaza who is just overcome with emotion. He stops, tries to continue, and then just walks off screen. That is an astounding thing for a TV reporter to do. Sadly I can't understand what he was saying without a translation, but it is testament to the suffering in Gaza that hardened journalists, who are experienced in reporting from war zones, (at least I assume this guy was, you wouldn't send a newbie in) are struggling to cope.

Springheeled · 22/07/2014 22:48

Love Jon Snow this week.
Complained to BBC and got a stupid email back. The bias is absurd.
So glad I can make the demo on Saturday- anyone else going?

donnie · 22/07/2014 22:52

Let's be clear, Mark Regev is a vile lying bastard.

Just so we're clear. Wink

Springheeled · 22/07/2014 23:17

Aside from demonstrating, writing to mps and boycotting- what can we do?
Does anyone know the firms that sell/stock Israeli produce and is if worth tweeting to put on pressure?
How did it work with South Africa? I am too young to remember other than that we didn't bank with Barclays and there was a lot of musical protest, not playing Sun City etc.
What can people do?

The BBC has become an utter disgrace and an irrelevance in world news but it has been dying for a while, hope it kicks the bucket before long, I wont miss its patheticness

Jon Snow should win an award for his coverage...and I see the coward Netanhayu has blamed all the civilian deaths on Hamas...what an utter irresponsible warmongering wanker

ColgateSmile · 22/07/2014 23:39

I emailed Sainsbury's asking them why they stock produce from illegal Israeli settlements and whether they would consider following the example set by the Co-operative. I got a response telling me that they are not a political organisation (although they are aware of the 'sensitive' situation in the Middle East) and that they like to give their customers the choice of whether to buy those products or not.

Apparently they are not currently stocking any Israeli produce at the moment.

I have not had chance to write a response back yet.

The email address is [email protected] if anyone else is interested in contacting them.

emma2277 · 22/07/2014 23:42

Why are Palestinian fishermen not allowed to fish in their own bloody sea? Why do the Israelis make sure they have little water and electricity? Why do the Israelis hold hundreds of innocent Palestinian prisoners? Why are Gazans PENNED in and not allowed to travel and why are NO DOCTORS allowed to go into Gaza to help the injured? Why do the Israelis stop the Palestinians rebuilding their infrastructures after they blow em up? Why are the Israelis such sadistic FUCKS and why are their apologists and spokesmen all such liars

emma2277 · 22/07/2014 23:48

The Israelis aka Netanyahu today also lie when they say Hamas are exactly the same as al quaeda ISIS Hizbollah and the Bakrum group in Nigeria...desperados....they also lie when they say Hamas want to destroy Israel...they changed their manifesto years ago, getting more moderate so a WORRY to the Israelis as they only have an argument against utter terrorists.....a bit of honesty from the israeli authorities wouldnt go amiss....and they may like to look in the mirror as well as plenty of their lot want to eradicate gazans totally...hypocrites and godless murderers

emma2277 · 22/07/2014 23:51

All the Palestinians want is a right to LIVE but also live like a free human being! Shove that up your arse Netanyahu and piss off you utter failure of a human specimen

ReigningQueen · 23/07/2014 00:03

Is it over 600 slaughtered now? And still the world does nothing.

justasecond · 23/07/2014 00:11

Right with you Emma. I feel an uncontrollable rage whenever I see that lying, deranged, psycopathic bastard on tv. He gets more deluded by the day.
I ask again why did he derail the unity of the Palestinian gov. He would have got his wish to get rid of Hamas but "lets be clear" if there was no Hamas what excuse would Bibi and his murderous, genocidal regime then use to kill innocent children, pregnant women?

emma2277 · 23/07/2014 00:20

Reigning Queen its edging up to 650 dead (100 of them children) and nearing 4000 injured. MAJORITY civilians. This has sowed the seeds of misery and problems for years to come for so many families.

There have been protests and rallies in four countries, UK, France, Greece and I forget the other, its something better than diplomats sitting on louis the 14th chairs on ancient expensive persian rugs in palaces and rubbing their chins! Whilst people are murdered with impunity...they are as guilty as the bombers IMO....and whilst the moon chap from the UN has called for an immediate ceasefire...its taken them all too long....ALL THEY NEED to get into their little heads is that Israel is an oppressor of a minority and are war criminals, nd theyare actually by their actions seeding more hatred, its not hard, they just have to open their eyes and LOOK

ReigningQueen · 23/07/2014 00:29

You're right emma. I feel your anger. I don't get why no one who can actually do something feel it too.
The UN are beyond useless. They do the same as all the world leaders. Spout a few words which have no strength and not much opinion.

he like Blair will be haunted by his ghosts and demons make no mistake....as for anger, I see it in many places....in the palestinians who havent been killed or been affected by loss of family...all the others are too grief stricken to let anger in yet....in the media outlets...more and more including USA are critical.....in normal people commenting online..in the street protests......and the israel apologists and spokespeople show GUILT!! only and some silly old scripts and arguments.....no anger..only feigned anger by Netanyahu....he has lost the plot.....very very telling and lets not forget the unreported many Israelis protesting against their stupid govts actions

emma2277 · 23/07/2014 00:45

ReigningQueen while the barbaric illegal infantile actions of the Israeli govt anger me and their hypocrisy and lies and their fkuting of international laws and NO ONE has theballs to take them to task for this, I more feel sad for both the general populations of both Israel and Palestine, particularly Gaza this time, I wonder if ordinary Israelis are rounded up if they speak out! I bet alot of them think NOT IN MY NAME....they shouldnt have to live with rocket attacks but the answer is and never is going tobe murdering civilians after they complain about being treated like animals in their own bloody land too,,,its a total disgrace and if these people think they are religious Im sure their God would be thoroughly ashamed of them, but of course they are not religious or spiritual, they are evil warand power mongers...the lowest of the low...aided an abetted by the USA and UK..shame on all of them

emma2277 · 23/07/2014 00:49

Thanks for the link justasecond...excellent!

I think most bullies and Purveyors of power will get their dirty pats taken down by the latest social revolution that is the www

Sleep well all and spare a thought for the hundreds of thousands Israeli govt has destroyed over two weeks, the utter bastards

emma2277 · 23/07/2014 00:57

hahaha just heard on Al Jazeera tv (by the way the tv station that was bombed in Gaza! And who have written to BN to complain and who the Israelis have said should be banned from Israel) that BN has spat his dummy out has demanded from the USA to reverse its decision to stop flights into Tel Aviv...tough luck! its not your call

Springheeled · 23/07/2014 07:06

Love the link justasecond because it's true- People are waking up now, people can see for themselves.
However, I bet Israel will get it's 'war room' into action and I wouldn't put it past them to falsify and distort etc sending things viral to back up their 'righteous cause' and so on.

emma227 I feel such an intense anger too.

I'm going to dig out my copy of shock doctrine by Naomi Klein as there was a chapter about Israel and the US and I can't remember it all but it was about the things manufactured in Israel such as surveillance equipment etc and possibly weapons of torture? But I need to reread. It's a great book btw
