Part 2: Israeli-Palestinian conflict

AndHarry · 17/07/2014 11:50

Starting a new thread as the original is almost full.

The original thread is here. It was started on 1st July after three Israeli boys were found murdered, before the murder of the Palestinian boy and the resumption of sustained rocket attacks and Operation Protective edge.

There are lots of excellent posts and links in the original thread showcasing a variety of views. The main consensus was that there is fault on both sides. We also considered various options for people on both sides of the conflict to work towards a lasting peace.

runes · 21/07/2014 19:16

An interesting article about Richard Kemp electronicintifada.net/blogs/asa-winstanley/hardcore-christian-zionism-israels-favorite-british-colonel

Yruapita · 21/07/2014 19:19

colgate I sincerely hope its not real - wouldn't put it past them though!

ColgateSmile · 21/07/2014 19:23

Yes there is a lot of stuff online that is inaccurate, hoaxes or atrocities committed in other conflicts (e.g. Syria) that are being reused and re-labelled as part of the current conflict in Gaza.

I am not not 100% about the validity of that video (apologies if it turns out to be a fake, if so I will delete the post), I will dig a bit deeper and try and find out more about it.

ColgateSmile · 21/07/2014 19:36

I have reported the video I posted, it does appear to be fake.

EllenMumsnet · 21/07/2014 20:08

Hi all. At ColgateSmile's request we've deleted the post with the video.

Wannabestepfordwife · 21/07/2014 20:17

I am sorry if this sounds really ignorant but if there is opposition to Netanyahu in the Israeli government could they impeach him for war crimes

runes · 21/07/2014 20:20

What makes you think it was fake colgate? It appeared on my facebook feed shared initially by a palestinian living in Gaza.

ColgateSmile · 21/07/2014 20:31

I did a quick google search and virtually every comment related to the video was saying it was fake. I don't know how reputable the source is, although the video is now on the Al Jazeera website as well?

I'm really not sure, it's hard to tell sometimes. I don't want to be sharing disinformation.

PigletJohn · 21/07/2014 20:33

with hundreds and hundreds of killings over the last few days, we don't need a video to tell us how terrible it is. Faked or real, the truth on the ground is worse.

TheHoneyBadger · 21/07/2014 22:04

just to say i'm still here and glad people are keeping the thread going. i've had to take a step back today. too easy to get into feeling sick and despairing in the face of the msm mis coverage and our leaders speaking in support of war crimes.

plus a busy day in this heat wipes you out.

somewheresafe · 21/07/2014 22:11

The video is real. It featured on C4 news and was very distressing to watch despite being edited.

Jon Snow has been fantastic and the C4 news is outperforming the BBC and other news channels in terms of journalistic integrity. There's still a long way to go but when he questions the despicable mark Regev you can almost see his hatred spilling over.

Interestingly C4 looked at the impact of social media on this genocide and concluded that this was a key ffactor in determining which way public sympathy was going.

PigletJohn · 21/07/2014 22:22

I suppose Google search can be manipulated if there is a large body of opposition to videos that show one side or the other in a bad light.

ColgateSmile · 21/07/2014 22:56

I asked for the video to be removed because I really was not sure about its authenticity; whether that video is real or not we know that similar things have happened in the past: rt.com/news/israel-soldier-45-days-525/

Social media is proving to be a very powerful tool (as much for the IDF as it is for Palestinians and their supporters).

somewheresafe · 21/07/2014 23:18

This diary account has had me in tears today, it's heartbreaking and so poignant: m.aljazeera.com/story/2014721102859370216

emma2277 · 21/07/2014 23:18

just watched Newsnight on BBC2 and Im disgusted the Israelis bombed a hospital killing doctors and patients and even people in intensive care...ANIMALS they are, nothing more than animals

Yruapita · 21/07/2014 23:53

Calling them animals is insulting to the animals!

Social media is letting it be known that most of the world is appalled by Israel's actions. Sympathy for their age old mantra of 'self-defence' and 'they don't want peace' is dwindling as people are seeing the lies. Many Israelis are seeing their government for what it is too, but It will take a bit longer for the totally brainwashed individuals who accept everything their government puts out.

To the Israeli apologists, the world can see what Israeli government is doing and drawing parallels.

Lawrence Weschler, a writer of considerable mainstream prestige, is sick of prevaricating about Israel. It’s rabid. It has rabies. And Gaza is a concentration camp. (Source mondweiss.net)

Lenny Lapon, an activist and retired teacher from US writes:

'Subsequently Israel has embarked upon an aggressive, Nazi-like expansion and a brutal, inhuman, military occupation of nearly half a century.
Israel is not becoming an apartheid state—it already is one with separate and unequal laws and policing for its Jewish citizens on one hand and for its non-Jewish, mostly Arab citizens and victims of the occupation on the other hand.
It is with a newfound clarity of thinking and analyzing a very emotional tragedy that I have thrown off the shackles of Zionist propaganda and am proudly and publicly renouncing my Israeli citizenship effective immediately. ' (source: mondweiss)

There are many many more. The voice of the world will get louder, whether the leaders act or not.

babbas · 22/07/2014 00:06

Weschler was mentioned in the first thread with a link to his writing.

Another influential writer is Gideon levy who is well known in Israel and internationally. He sums up exactly how a lot of Israelis who oppose the apartheid feel. Not all of them are as brave as levy in voicing their disapproval. Fantastic article here:

Yruapita · 22/07/2014 01:00

Apologies for repeating Blush

levy is a hero! Anyone who stands against oppression is a hero.

Fakebook · 22/07/2014 01:07

If anyone wants to know which companies to avoid, download the app "Buycott" and join the causes supporting Palestine. You can scan barcodes of products and see if they are connected to Israel in any way.

Yruapita · 22/07/2014 01:27

Fantastic! Thanks for that fakebook.

runes · 22/07/2014 02:04

I've been checking up on who to boycott too. It seems most of the cosmetic companies I use are out. I've now discovered that Lush have supported war on want and were boycotted for being anti Israeli for supporting one worlds single released in support of Palestine. Check out their charity work and ethos. www.lush.co.uk/article/charity-support From tomorrow I'll be mostly buying Lush products.

wordsmithsforever · 22/07/2014 07:38

Wow - Gideon Levy - courage! I'm going to post that link on the Chat thread.

Nads0622 · 22/07/2014 07:45

Lots so sad Israel are bombing children and hospitals. The video footage shot by international journalists running away desperately for their life from Israeli fire. 4 lives taken cruelly. The images of children murdered in the cruelest of ways . Gaza is one of the most densely populated strips of land on earth. It is made up of people who were displaced by the Israelis. It's blockaded land, air and sea by the Israelis. Illegal chemical weapons are being used to ensure future generations are affected. This is about ethnic cleansing .
