Who does vote conservative? Is it lots of old people who don't work?! Nobody I know with primary aged children-and let's face it, that's who this is aimed at because secondary children can look after themselves for the most part after school-who wants this. Lots of people do vote conservative r though?!

Following on from the subject of this thread, maybe not such a pipe dream, but even then our best it appears would struggle against their 'worst'.

China is looking to move away from mass manufacturing and moving further up the export 'value chain', where they take on the world in the better skilled job market. Just a thought.

“British schoolchildren are lagging so far behind their peers in the Far East that even pupils from wealthy backgrounds are now performing worse in exams than the poorest students in China, an international study shows.

The children of factory workers and cleaners in parts of the Far East are more than a year ahead of the offspring of British doctors and lawyers, according to a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Researchers said the study, which looked at the performance of 15-year-olds in mathematics, showed countries could overcome traditional social class divides to raise education standards among relatively deprived pupils.”

The visit could lead to schools adopting Chinese-style tactics such as more evening classes

Hmm.

I think the biggest difference between China and the UK which affects educational success is cultural. Not how they teach, or 'eliminate time wasting between lessons' but in utter obedience to authority, discipline and respect for education. Look at the opening ceremony for the Olympics. There is no way ever that the UK could achieve what was achieved in Beijing. And would we want to?

Noblegiraffe …. Not really, as much of the education process in China and Japan IS repetition, which does stifle creativity, but may be necessary in the basics? As we have discussed elsewhere on mumsnet, SOMETHING has to change based on the terrible results in the basic life skills the majority of our children leave school with, whether looking at international comparisons, or listening to the frustrated employers.

We have already let down a generation of children, and that is what scares me.

Some serious commentators think Mr Gove is really interested in Tory leadership if Cameron loses next time.

Definitely, umpity; I think that is his end goal.
