It's an ideology that I love. But I can't see it happening irl. Big difference in parental attitude towards academic qualifications for a start. It's already clear in ds reception class who reads everyday and who doesn't. And this a at an outstanding school.

Presumably he is talking about the school not the parents.

There are so many reasons why private schools are (in general) successful and get good results and these factors just can't be replicated in every state schools. We have 60% EAL children and about the same FSM-attendance is a huge issue and so many of the children don't read to anyone at home ever. We are oversubscribed with huge classes, no TA, a large number of poorly educated parents who don't attend parents evening or even come to the school gates. These are issues entirely concerned with home environments-how can Gove possibly change this?

Cutting class size would be much more effective than tinkering around the edges. I imagine many that use private would be drawn back to state.

Will cost a bomb though. Not sure how funding it would work.

And if they were indistinguishable he'd have done a lot more than reform the Education System.

Ever wondered why there is such a disparity between schools in Britain? And why we uniquely in the world get so chewed up about state v private?
Because people in Britain are phenomenally different. This is an extraordinarily uneven society where what class you're born into defines the rest of your life, right up until your (early) death.
But so long as we're bickering over schools we're not arguing about those issues.

Gove has a daft pipe dream State schools 35 in class. Some private schools under 10 .

Our county is around £4500 a year per secondary pupil

Local private school is £4500-£5300, Y7-Y11 per term

That means DD1 gets £11,400 less spent on her last GCSE year

If gove wants to use common entrance he'd better up his game. The syllabus is different to key stage and some of the level 3 papers are GCSE standard. Good luck with that one

Ok this probably slightly unfair because state schools do get certain building repair grants from else where, but I guess private schools have investments and other funds too!

What Gove wants is academic results in state that are on a par with private on a state school budget - so the teachers and free parent help take the workload while he takes the credit.

I'd love them to put in the money to make this a possibility but they are not going to are they?

Plus DS1 spend 50% of his time in class treading water while teachers are abused whilst trying to handle challenging children - what is Gove going to do about that? When you have an 11 year old shocked by how some children behave you know something is going wrong.

The only way to attempt to level the playing field would be to make all schools boarding, and have all chiuldren raised by the state.
Too many variables otherwise, would contaminate the specimens.

I used to be a teacher before I had the children, I will be returning next January if I manage to get a job. I have been out 8 years.

Even in that short time the job I trained for and enjoyed seems to be long gone.

I do feel that it should be someone with an interest in state education who should be in charge..eg: someone who actually went to one or sends their - shock horror!! - dc to one.

Or is it just that the successful ones are the ones who were educated privately?
