So... what did Materazzi say to Zidane?

Listener suggestions on the Today programme were quite amusing. Along the lines of:

"Bung you a million if you headbut me"
"Make it five"
"OK, but not on my face".

The other one was along the lines of:

"Do you accept that the common agricultural policy favours French farmers disproportionately?"

Made me larf anyway. So what do you think he said?

Very good!

Sorry, not inspired enough to come up with any more.

Marina · 10/07/2006 14:11

I am still struggling to see the funny side of it Caligula
I have always loved ZZ and cannot think what got into him.
Sad I know but ds and I were both crying when we saw what he did and got sent off.
Ds had already wept buckets earlier when I had to explain that Roger Federer is, and has always been Swiss and not British.

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:12

I am dying to know I think it was racist, most of my french friends think it was possibly anti muslim

zippitippitoes · 10/07/2006 14:12

I thought it was really sad..dp suggested a slur on his mother

Reginald · 10/07/2006 14:13

It must've been something pretty bad to make zizou react like that. So sad

(but the today prog suggestions were v funny!)

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:13

and in the bigger picture if Matterazzi was in the local park and played like he normally does
He would get nutted

Marina · 10/07/2006 14:13

I have to say I am pretty sure it was racist myself

Earlybird · 10/07/2006 14:13

Heard a rumour that it was something about him being a "terrorist", but no idea if there's any truth in it.

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:13

if it is marina the whole incident was very ugly indeed

niceglasses · 10/07/2006 14:14

Wow never thought of the racist aspect, could well have been for such an extreme reaction. Wonder if we will ever know.

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:14

and Zizou has head butted before...
Wonder if he is a Taurus by any chance
I'm sorry but I really love him...

Marina · 10/07/2006 14:14

Not excusing his behaviour for one second but trying to think of an explanation that made someone who is a tough but usually fair player do something so aggressive...

Caligula · 10/07/2006 14:15

He's released a statement where he's said he's not going to tell us.

So maybe Materazzi will.

Marina · 10/07/2006 14:16

Or a Capricorn maybe piffle?
Ds wants scars just like Franck Ribery [puzzled emoticon]

zippitippitoes · 10/07/2006 14:16

there will be a disciplinary so he will have to make a statement, what he says in it may or may not be correct

It will be in his book though I'm sure

I think racist is likely..isn't he morroccan from marseille?

Earlybird · 10/07/2006 14:16

I think he's Algerian.

dressedupnowheretogo · 10/07/2006 14:17

my dh reckons along the lines of your mother..... or your wife ...... or your kids......

men are hateful when football is involved ifeel sorry for zz his last match to end like that bless him

Reginald · 10/07/2006 14:18

HAHAHA Marina!

SpoiralTheEejit · 10/07/2006 14:18

Am sure it will be racist. Couldn't help noticing teh complete absence of black players in teh Italian team compared to France. Now, I know (I think) that there has been less immigration into Italy, or rather, it is more recent, but it still seems odd. Maybe?

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:19

algerian parents but born in Marseille
Riberys scars come from a massive car accident as a toddler
Gosh I hope Arsenal buy him this season

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/07/2006 14:19

so it's ok to behave like that if some makes a racist comment then?

DH has the occasional racist comment (some quite nasty) while doing his current job - but he's never felt the urge to headbutt someone!

SpoiralTheEejit · 10/07/2006 14:20

Who has said it is ok?

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:20

Not to generalise of course but my brother informs me that Spain and Italy are quite racist in the football scene - players and fans

PollyLogos · 10/07/2006 14:20

I too think this is a very sad end to Zidane's career. I have a lot of respect for him. They are reporting over here (Greece) that the Italian called him a terrorist.

Reginald · 10/07/2006 14:20

Ribery was fantastic wasn't he? What club does he play for now?
