So... what did Materazzi say to Zidane?

Listener suggestions on the Today programme were quite amusing. Along the lines of:

"Bung you a million if you headbut me"
"Make it five"
"OK, but not on my face".

The other one was along the lines of:

"Do you accept that the common agricultural policy favours French farmers disproportionately?"

Made me larf anyway. So what do you think he said?

other meant to say. Multi-tasking here, cooking dinner for two (monsters that is)

singledadofthree · 11/07/2006 00:51

fav drink has to be guiness - if you remember that - altho i hardly get out now and so dont indulge meself much. also partial to decent strong red wine - which i get even less of....oh and as for hugs - they are a rarity - for now at least

singledadofthree · 11/07/2006 00:52

of course - its tea time - am in a world of my own here in the middle of the night

Alipiggie · 11/07/2006 00:54

Best Guiness I ever had was in this really grotty little pub in Dublin followed by a Bushmills Chaser. Red Wine - love the Chilean ones, but I'm spoilt over here as it's so much cheaper. As for hugs for you sorry can't manage the guiness.

singledadofthree · 11/07/2006 00:58

yeah the exported stuff just isnt the same - and you do travel well - even to ireland

i was in the states last year but no where near you - was down south in florida being a tourist for a change.

so what delights are you cooking up for your littluns? and be sure not to burn them - i'm off soon

Alipiggie · 11/07/2006 01:00

When I worked - sigh those were the days - I travelled a lot as Ericsson was one of my customers. Love Dublin. The monsters are eating egg noodles with fresh parmesan and watching Toy Story 2. So all quiet. Was Florida good?? Oh and you're knocking off early tonight then

singledadofthree · 11/07/2006 01:04

early? your hug should keep me going for a litle longer

and florida was excellent - very hot and great fun - hired meself a nice little chrysler and popped down to the gulf of mex - was a great escape - thought of going over full time but kids etc..
and i'm hungry now - will have a rummage in the cupboard

Alipiggie · 11/07/2006 01:05

singledadofthree · 11/07/2006 01:07

yeessss?? the thought of?

Alipiggie · 11/07/2006 01:08

That got your attention didn't it . Long lazy days lying on the beach with nothing but a cool drink and the man of your dreams massaging your back. Ummm what a thought massage - now that would be good wouldn't it

Alipiggie · 11/07/2006 01:09

As for the other thoughts - not in open forum you don't

Toby72 · 11/07/2006 01:11

well whatever he said it will go with him for the rest of his life..........along with his career

Moomin · 11/07/2006 02:47

it can't be much worse than beckham had after his sending off in 98. do you remember - such gems as 'i've f*ed your wife up the arse' and 'i hope your little boy gets cancer', not to mention to racist abuse many of the players have to suffer. it all stinks. it spoiled the final for me

monkey · 11/07/2006 06:42

One of the "best" insults I heard when I taught in a London school, & mummy cussing was the sport of the moment was "you're mum's got furry tits". caused a similar reaction.

I agree he shouldn't hace done it etc etc, but it must've been pretty bad, come on, as others have said, this sort of this happens all the time.

If it was racist comment, will Matterazzi also be called to account?

aelita · 11/07/2006 08:41

Each newspaper seems to have a different story, but one claimed a lipreader gave the translation as 'you're the son of a terrorist whore'. This was after Materazzi tweaked Zidane's nipple - wtf?? Apparently Zidane's mother was taken ill recently, so he lost it. If someone's to be described as unsporting, my money's on Materazzi.

Freckle · 11/07/2006 09:26

Yes, but footballers insult each other all the time - and the ref come to that. I'm sure Zidane will have heard worse. What surprised me was that the lipreader was Italian and I therefore assume that Materazzi was speaking in Italian - which seems to presume that Zidane speaks Italian too.

Anyway, Zidane was a prize idiot. It Materazzi was trying to upset him (which he clearly was as they had been having a slanging match up to that point), Zidane gave him absolutely everything he could have hoped for and ended his career in total shame. There are a lot of children out there who have been badly let down by seeing their hero show complete feet of clay.

monkey · 11/07/2006 09:30

I dunno, it also shows that grown ups can loose it too, can be upset, can be nasty and say mean things

I love ZZ. I think even more now.

My ds sometimes says he doesn't want to go to his football club cos the other kids sometimes say mean things, he gets disappointed when they loose. I thinks it's been useful for them to see this happens in the grown up world too, that they can cry when they're disappointed etc.

foxinsocks · 11/07/2006 09:31

materazzi could just deny what was said anyway

insults are often bandied around in football - for all anyone knows Zidane could have been winding Materazzi up all game

don't forget, Zidane has a reputation for losing his cool and it's not the first time he's headbutted someone on a football pitch

Marina · 11/07/2006 09:50

Zidane has remained an idol even with his uncertain temper...he has done this before, as FIS says. Interesting piece on Newsnight about his background. I didn't realise his family were of Berber descent rather than Algerian Arab. He has been heckled very badly in France-Algeria matches because of the suggestion his dad was an informer in the Algerian War of Independence and that is why they moved to Marseille.
Papers this morning that I have seen seem to tend to terrorism-based insults. Materazzi is coming across as pig-ignorant and his refusal to speak to the press has been interpreted as having something to hide.
Still feel so sad that the final picture ds saw of Zidane was of him being sent off after such a stupid act of rage
But love the suggestion that ZZ was told to keep his tiddlypeeps at home. I'd headbutt someone who said that to me, frankly.

What Made Zizou See Red
Updated: 07:41, Tuesday July 11, 2006

A lip-reader has reportedly revealed the words which provoked Zinedine Zidane's now infamous World Cup final headbutt.

Marianne Frere claims Italian defender Marco Materazzi insulted the French captain with a stream of racial and personal abuse.

She told The Sun that Zidane was called a "son of a terrorist whore" before he lashed out and was sent off.

Reports in France have suggested it was the reference to the Algerian-born star's mother which made him blow his top.

His mother Malika had been taken to hospital seriously ill only hours before Sunday's final.

Zidane's agent Alain Miglaccio said the player had told him a 'very serious' comment had been made during the match.

Italian news agency Ansa quoted Materazzi as saying: "It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist.

"I'm ignorant. I don't even know what the word means."

Italy won the match 5-3 on penalties, with Zidane missing the shoot-out in his final match before retirement.

Marina · 11/07/2006 10:21

There is one completely apparent truth in that report, for sure...Materazzi is certainly ignorant
It won't be his name cited as one of the most outstandingly talented, if flawed, footballers in the world in years to come, either.

zippitippitoes · 11/07/2006 10:22

according to that report

he did not call Zidane aterrorist but the first bit he was said to be the son of a terrorist

foxinsocks · 11/07/2006 10:27

it's certainly been a lucrative time for lip readers

they've all come up with something different

aelita · 11/07/2006 10:48

The Mail came up with the same translation as The Sun (same lipreader?). The article also has some interesting background on Zidane's upbringing. If the translation is correct, I guess it means he thinks his mother more important than the World Cup. Who on Mumsnet could argue with that?
