So... what did Materazzi say to Zidane?

Listener suggestions on the Today programme were quite amusing. Along the lines of:

"Bung you a million if you headbut me"
"Make it five"
"OK, but not on my face".

The other one was along the lines of:

"Do you accept that the common agricultural policy favours French farmers disproportionately?"

Made me larf anyway. So what do you think he said?

We are not doing right or wrong QOQ
Jusy why

LadyTophamHatt · 10/07/2006 14:21

For someone like, a player at that level to do that in the world cup final I think it's safe to assume that Materazzi deserved it.

I'm not excusing it but there no way anyone would have reacted so badly had it been a usual footballer comment....

SpoiralTheEejit · 10/07/2006 14:21

Agree piffle, lots of problems in sport with racism.

cardy · 10/07/2006 14:21

Whatever was said doesn't justify his reaction. I think he really let himself and his team down. I know that sounds a bit self-righteous but he could have been a real hero at the end of that match, whether France and won or not.

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:22

Ribery plays for Lyon Gerard Houllier manages them(ex liverpool manager)
Not for long....

Caligula · 10/07/2006 14:22

Dunno, Zinedine must have heard it all before, surely?

Hello QoQ, where've you been?

I was shocked at the time. And we have videoed it for DS (5) to watch tonight. He was going on about zidane at breakfast time so we had to explain that he got sent off. Nice for DS to watch once he gets back from football training. I've already had to reprimand him for spitting which he picked up from watching the World Cup.

Reginald · 10/07/2006 14:23

I don't think his reaction was right or justified either, but I do feel very sad for ZZ on what must have been an extremely emotional occasion that he lost his rag like that

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/07/2006 14:23

well lots of comments are saying (along the lines of)

It must have been racist for him to react like that. I read some of those comments to mean that if it wasn't a racist comment that made him behave so disgustingly then it would be terrible, but somehow a responing like that to a racist comment would be slightly more acceptable.

I don't think it matters what was said - ZZ shouldn't have done it!

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:23

Well I'm a pacifist adn I have wanted to slap Materazzi ever since that US game where De Rosis elbowed that Yank in the face and smashed him up and then they argued and started a fight with Us team who were shell shocked
Arrogant feckers - nice that the most corrupt football league in the world takes home the trophy though...

SaintGeorge · 10/07/2006 14:24

He has always had a temper and has acted violently on the pitch before.

Nothing justifies his behaviour and I think he has no one to blame for his disgrace but himself.

He still walks away from the tournament with the Golden Ball for best player which personally I think is a bad decision.

Earlybird · 10/07/2006 14:24

They just showed a clip from the late '90's where Zidane headbutted someone on the field and was banned for 5 games....so, he's done it before.

Didn't Figo also headbutt someone in one of the earlier matches? Alot of experienced players losing their heads - not just the young, impulsive players like Rooney.

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:25

SG the decision was made at half time so their hands were tied!

Caribbeanqueen · 10/07/2006 14:26

I don't think he should have got the Golden Ball either. C Ronaldo didn't get the Best Young Player because of his behaviour in the England match, so Zidane shouldn't have got that either.

cardy · 10/07/2006 14:26

Arh, perhaps I am a bit bias, being half Italian. I wanted them to win especially after their fantastic display against Germany. It would have been better if they had won without ZZ being sent off though.

SaintGeorge · 10/07/2006 14:27

I didn't realise that Piffle. Was it announced then too? Shame really, I think it really gives a bad impression of the sport when someone who acts like that gets such an award.

Reginald · 10/07/2006 14:27

Italy performed well throughout the tournament, but in the final, France were the better team

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:28

not true caribbeanqueen it is done on points system alone

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:28

it is so tough being a francophile today though

zippitippitoes · 10/07/2006 14:28

just read some history of him and racism

Reginald · 10/07/2006 14:29

I know - not getting the olympics and now this

SpoiralTheEejit · 10/07/2006 14:30

I've a soft spot for him because he has such a cool name

foxinsocks · 10/07/2006 14:31

they voted for him before end of the last game

it was v sad - doesn't matter what was said, he still shouldn't have done it. If it was racist he could have reported him after the game. The problem is you only have the say-so of the two of them so easy to deny (unless someone else heard it).

Piffle · 10/07/2006 14:32

Maybe Zizou could head butt Le Pen...

Marina · 10/07/2006 14:35

I have already told ds those scars must be as the result of a bad accident - now I can tell him again knowing the full story Isn't he at Lyon at the mo? I thought he had a fantastic tournament generally.
I did love it when Alan Hanson got so fed up with Abidal he nicknamed him Abigail...(no disrepect to any Abigails out there especially at MNHQ).
Agree piffle, I so hoped to be able to say at least that France played their socks off. Sad day for ZZ and French football.
