How plausible do we find John Terry's defense?

Condover · 09/07/2012 12:35

That he was only repeating words Anton Ferdinand has accused him of saying.

I can't imagine saying those words ever. I'd be very upset to be accused of saying them, but I wouldn't repeat them in my denial, but then I'm not John Terry....

I thought it was a member of the public who reported this to the police not Ferdinand.

At the 'clear the air' meeting after the match didn't they shake hands and that was the end of it and it was only later when Ferdinand watched it back that he realised what was said? If that is true then JT's defence of repeating what Ferdinand said to him is rubbish.

Either way it looks like one of them is lying.

mayorquimby · 10/07/2012 13:45

*god complex (posting from iPhone = nightmare)

mayorquimby · 10/07/2012 13:47

I thought it was a member of the public who reported this to the police not Ferdinand.

It was. Also the reason why there was no Suarez trial, nobody made a complaint to the police

Yama · 10/07/2012 13:51

Yes, so if JT claims to be sarcastically repeating some AF said, wouldn't AF remember saying "Are you calling me a black cunt?" It doesn't add up.

YouGoonie · 10/07/2012 14:19

And if there was a meeting after the game and AF said he didn't hear anything, wouldn't JT have said "But you said I called you a black cunt-which I didn't"
Also wouldn't the other people at the meeting have to be called as witnesses?

thestringcheesemassacre · 10/07/2012 14:21

Agree with Alibaba.
I hope he gets life

1sassylassy · 10/07/2012 14:21

The magistrate has stated there is a case to answer.

YouGoonie · 10/07/2012 14:26

Has he just said that? What does that mean in relation to what's happening?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/07/2012 14:26

hackmum I disagree. Fools up and down this country worship footballers as some kind of higher species, and aspire to be like them. Bringing a case against John Terry shows that no-one is higher than the law, not even the England football captain.
If we as a country are serious about tackling racism then Terry needs to be an example of here.

hackmum · 10/07/2012 14:47

mayorquimby: "The parking in disabled spaces." He parks in disabled spaces?

Alibaba: "Bringing a case against John Terry shows that no-one is higher than the law, not even the England football captain."

But it seems to me that it's the other way around - that he's being prosecuted for something that no-one else is prosecuted for. I assume there are thousands of instances of verbal racial abuse committed every day in this country - sad, but probably true. If they were all prosecuted, the courts would be overflowing. As it is, prosecutions for this kind of thing seem to be extremely rare.

CharlieBoo · 10/07/2012 15:25

Exactly Hackmum... Like I said before any other footballer would not be there if they'd don't the same, it would've been dealt with by the FA...

MonaLot · 10/07/2012 16:40

John Terry seems to be an appalling human being. He had an affair with the partner of a team mate so he's probably racist too.

Nancy66 · 10/07/2012 17:04

bizarre logic there Mona - most footballers shag around.

Think it's a stupid time-wasting case.

1sassylassy · 10/07/2012 17:38

I dont think its a time wasting case.As somebody who has suffered racial abuse,I find too many people think it is still accepatable to racially abuse somebody.Hopefully a high profile case may teach some of them what they are doing is wrong both legally and morally.

edam · 10/07/2012 22:44

Mona, are you taking the piss?

JT had sex with someone who used to have sex with someone else. Big wow. Same applies to 95% of all adults, I'd guess.

Lottapianos · 11/07/2012 07:19

Just as an aside, the woman he is supposed to have 'shagged' - Vanessa Perroncel - is absolutely adamant that there was no affair whatsoever. She said it was a nasty little rumour started by someone else designed to wind up her ex-partner, Wayne Bridge, the story then got legs and the tabloids went with it. So we don't know for sure that he has cheated. I'm certainly no fan of JT but to be honest, I think he and AF sound just as bad as each other.

Nancy66 · 11/07/2012 08:44

Lotta - there is absolutely no doubt that the story was true.

ironman · 11/07/2012 08:55

I sat for three hours in court yesterday watching John Terry be cross examined by the prosecution. I can't say what went on as the trial is still going on.

Suffice to say it was very interesting.

I'll post what went on when the trial is over.
I think there trial is going on for a few more days, anyone can attend the trial and sit in the public gallery. It's being held at Westminster Magistrates Court in the Marylebone Road. The public gallery was full of the press, so hardly any members of the public could get in. I'll maybe try again to sit in on the trial, if I can get in!

EldritchCleavage · 11/07/2012 12:08

He's not being accused of 'being a racist'. It doesn't matter what's in his heart or mind. The question is, did he resort to racist language in his contretemps with Anton Ferdinand? Ferdinand has been very clear in his evidence that he did not use this language first or make an accusation as Terry claims. We shall see whose evidence the magistrates prefer.

Ironman, there's no jury, so you can post about what you saw and heard provided there is no reporting restriction in place.

Lottapianos · 11/07/2012 12:44

Nancy66, can you say more?

Oblomov · 11/07/2012 12:48

JT is a nasty piece of work. People in the football world know that.
Of course he is guilty.
Can they prove it? Aaaaahhhhhh ..... well that is totally another matter......

ironman · 11/07/2012 12:49

Ok then. I sat in the court and heard the prosecution say to Terry "you're not a racist are you? you are friends with Ashley Cole aren't you? John Terry said he was. At first I thought the prosecution was actually the defence! Prosecuting Council went onto say that "this is like being in the school playground isn't it?

Film footage was played of the alleged incident, and speech recognition 'experts' were quoted, they also used facial recognition 'experts'. I thought how much is this costing. Learned council said how professional they were in their field. An old woman was dropping of to sleep by this stage, and I thought she had wasted her time in the public gallery, and someone else could have used her space. Out of 40 spaces in the public gallery, I would say 35 people were from the press and only 5 of us from the public.

The prosecutor said to Terry did you use the words BC and Terry replied that before that he had called Ferdinand "a fxxking knonbhead first". I nearly burst out laughing, the whole thing was farcical, it reminded me of two children being hauled before the school head and asked who was name calling.

Terry was asked on quite a few occasions if this sort of behaviour goes on regularly on the football pitch and he said it did. Ferdinand according to Terry was making 'thrusting' gestures with his hand (wanking gestures) and I think he said something about his wife and affairs, (could not hear that clearly, as we were behind a large glass window).

Apparently Ferdinand did not have any support in the court and only his father and lawyer attended court on Monday.

If I heard "fxxking knob head" used once I heard it ten times. I'm sure our learned friends enjoyed using this term.Grin

Having sat through part of this trial, IMO it is a complete waste of taxpayers money.

Nancy66 · 11/07/2012 12:55

Lotta - John Terry spent a small fortune taking out an injunction (that was over turned) to prevent him being named. Seems a lot of trouble and expense to go to for a false story.

Newspapers ran the story and nobody ever sued.

Vanessa P only started to deny it when nobody would pay her the ludicrous sum she was asking for her story.

ironman · 11/07/2012 13:03

Ashley Cole is giving evidence today. This should be interesting as he is a friend of John Terry.

EldritchCleavage · 11/07/2012 13:18

Have you been to many trials, ironman? It's not like on TV...
