Is this just a another shit example of the selfish society? Could the bus driver or one of the other passengers not just given her the 20p she needed for her fare?

'the article says she was out with friends. why didtn they give her the 20p?'

presumably, because they had left by then and she only found out she was short of money when it was time to pay. Otherwise, she would have already been to the cashpoint to get the money out.

bitofcheese · 08/06/2012 15:26

i think the people who were on the bus and ignored the fact that she needed 20p should give thought to their selfishness as her tragic experience could have been avoided if they had not ignored her plight, tight bastards

pattercakes · 08/06/2012 15:34

Yes I would have given her the 20p. It seems a bit unusual. She was very unlucky not to get helped out. Have the bus company made a statement yet

2shoes · 08/06/2012 15:36

"Nice victim blaming there!"

But ok to blame the bus driver for the fact the woman was raped, but not ok to ask why the woman didn't take responsibility for her own safety.

alemci · 08/06/2012 15:44

glad my dd didn't get her place at Nottingham and I cannot believe no one would give her money for the fare or the bus driver would let her on the bus.

NapaCab · 08/06/2012 15:51

The worst thing about this story is that when sentencing takes place, the sick fecker will probably only get 10 years or 10 years and be out in 7 or something. The police are talking about taking him off the streets so he is no longer a threat to women but sentencing for rape is so pathetic, he will continue to pose a threat long-term.

The poor, poor girl. The fact that she pleaded with the driver and passengers shows she was scared to walk home and so she must have been so terrified when she was kicked off the bus at that hour of the morning.

Obviously the rapist is 100% to blame but I couldn't live with the guilt of what happened to her if I were the shitbag bus driver, in particular.

Ryoko · 08/06/2012 15:53

Heard about this on the Wright Stuff this morning another non-story.

As I live in London I see plenty of people begging for 10p for a cup of tea, £1 for the bus etc, it's done so often no one takes any notice. And at 3am in the morning the other passengers refused to help how many drunks was that then 2? maybe 4? after 11pm there is hardly anyone on buses.

Fact of the matter is this is a non-story because if it wasn't for the double bad luck of getting kicked off the bus and then raped this story would not have been reported, note here that the focus is the bus driver and passengers rather then the man roaming the streets looking for a victim, he would have still raped someone if this woman had got on the bus it would be some other poor fuck and we wouldn't have heard about it.

Why is it accepted that the streets are no place for a woman at night and it's societies responsibility to help them get home safe rather then the police/governments/councils responsibility to ensure that the streets are safe day and night for all.

Magneto · 08/06/2012 16:07

I actually posted a thread a few weeks ago about how I regularly get begged for 20p on my to the train station because that's all they need to get home. Sometimes it's men, sometimes women and sometimes it's children. Often they beg and plead for sometime before moving on to the next person.

The general consensus of mumsnet was that not giving them 20p was the right thing to do for various reasons. Any one of those people could be raped after I refuse them 20p, but how am I to know? Any one of them could also just be out begging and any one of them could easily call a parent or friend to pick them up.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

knowitallstrikesagain · 08/06/2012 16:11

her tragic experience could have been avoided if they (the passengers) had not ignored her plight, tight bastards

And her tragic experience could have been avoided if she had checked in advance she had the money for the bus, knowing it was the last one and she needed to get home.

Comments like this, the attitude of 'don't blame the victim' but happily blame anyone else in the vicinity make me very angry. It was not their fault this happened. It was not her fault this happened. It was the rapist's fault this happened. But if you are going to lay blame with the people who allowed her to walk home alone at 3am, some of the blame has to lie with her.

Ryoko · 08/06/2012 16:12

Theres a boy who stands round ealing broadway station day after day, begging for a quid for the train home with his fake tears and I want my mummy bullshit.

Honestly this story is bullshit all it does is highlight the fact we are still living in the Victorian age where the streets are not a safe place for a lady and people should be gentlemen and assist her in getting home, away from all the nasty people who roam the streets and are accepted as part of the norm.

FanjoForHerMajesty · 08/06/2012 16:20

knowitall, well, she learned her lesson didn't she.. Hmm

Ryoko · 08/06/2012 16:27

Considering the time you have no idea how many others had tried to get on the bus free or beg for a fare that night.

Saying she was clearly distressed as she tried for 8 mins doesn't cut it, come to London where well trained screaming kids cry and pester people day after day, harassing them until they give up and give them money. you honestly can't tell if someone genuine or not, some are so good they deserve an oscar.

And no I wouldn't give her 20p I never give any beggers money for the above reason.

The real point of this story is how accepted rape is, if it wasn't for the bus part the news wouldn't be reporting it at all.

knowitallstrikesagain · 08/06/2012 16:31

Fanjo you are either spectacularly missing the point or you are being deliberately provocative.

My point, nice and clear:

You should not blame anyone bar the rapist for this girl being raped.

If you are going to blame people, the girl would have to take some of the blame for not getting herself home safely, as well as the bus driver and the passengers.

Why is it acceptable to say that strangers should have given her money but not to say that she should have made sure she had enough money, knowing this was the last bus and otherwise she would be walking home in a dangerous area?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/06/2012 16:36

or..i am disagreeing with you

raindropsinmyhair · 08/06/2012 16:36

But this woman obviously needed 20p for her fare- she wasn't begging, asking people then moving on. She needed to get on that bus at 3am and nobody helped her.

raindropsinmyhair · 08/06/2012 16:40

She made a mistake in being 20p short, yes- but how on earth does that excuse the behaviour of the bus driver? Would any decent, compassionate person turn someone away at that time in the morning for being 20p short? And happily sit on the bus and not step in to help?

Yes, it's not their fault she was raped- that lies soley with the rapist. However, their behaviour, in my opinion, was disgraceful.

knowitallstrikesagain · 08/06/2012 16:46

Fanjo I am saying that nobody was to blame but the rapist. So I am happy to hold an opposing view to you if you think differently.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/06/2012 16:47

Yes, I actually do understand what you are trying to say :)

Ryoko · 08/06/2012 16:48

raindropsinmyhair

You obviously have never been on a London Night bus it happens all the time, hell if some fucker kicks up stink everyone can get kicked off the bus without being given their money back or an emergency ticket and have to walk home (had that happen before now that is unacceptable).

GhouliaYelps · 08/06/2012 17:09

That poor girl. She must have had her worst fear realised coming true.
Some people are just utter cunts.

KalSkirata · 08/06/2012 17:09

3am bus. cant beleive no-one would stump up 20p. I'd rather be ripped off than let anyone at 3am, male or female, get stranded miles from home. what is wrong with people?

claig · 08/06/2012 17:37

These bus companies need to change their policies on passengers late at night. What if a person with learning difficulties had been abandoned by friends after a pub crawl, or if someone had been mugged or it someone had been chased or if someone is mentally ill or suffering concussion or if someone is totally drunk and none of them have enough money for the fare at 3 am?

claig · 08/06/2012 17:39

We're not talking about a fortune, it is a matter of a few pounds and the bus is already out on the route, and a few people not paying the full fare is not going to break the company.

Annunziata · 08/06/2012 17:48

20p Angry

There are just so many things which combine- the girl for not having her fare, the bus driver who didn't want to/ was too scared to let her on, the people who sat and ignored her begging... Did no one on that bus have a daughter or a niece or a friend?

BoffinMum · 08/06/2012 17:50

There's also a point here about allowing drivers to behave like decent human beings rather than being ridiculously punitive with disciplinaries when the company is not even going to be out of pocket.
