WARNING - DISTRESSING LINK

I can't believe this man only got 6 years??! here Surely he deserves life at least?? I have a 2 year old and just can't imagine how I would feel if someone did this to her - why on earth did he just get 6 years?? Sad

I too am crying and that never happens. Six fucking years when she will bear the scars forever, and god knows what ramifications it will have both physically and psychologically. Someone who does that will NEVER EVER be normal and be able to live in society without posing a risk. Ever.

For fucks sake, some people who posted stupid comments on facebook during the riots got nearly as much! Where do our priorities lie in our justice system?

JustHecate · 26/01/2012 10:54

My god. 6 years. And that's the full sentence?

So he could be out in half that?

My god.

You get more than that for robbing a bank.

There really does need to be an overhaul of the system.

noir · 26/01/2012 11:02

Being a child protection social worker I thought I was unshockable when it came to abuse, but this has stunned me. God bless that poor poor child.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 26/01/2012 11:04

Six years is ridiculous x that poor poor child nothings ever gonna ne normal for her again and the guy responsible gets just six years! Agree with Hecate u would get more for robbery! Even life wouldn't be long enough for that sick freak.

SardineQueen · 26/01/2012 13:03

I just read it. Six FUCKING YEARS. I am really really shocked.

I am going to write to the attorney general.

SardineQueen · 26/01/2012 13:05

here it seems quite easy to email them. Put in the name of the man and the court and the date and send an email saying you feel the sentence is unduly lenient if you would like. They look at all of them.

Zideq · 26/01/2012 13:08

I simply don't understand how you can plea bargain when there is enough evidence to covict other than to save cost.

WinterIsComing · 26/01/2012 13:13

SQ could you perhaps C&P your email, or the bare bones of it (facts and a link to the address maybe) as a post here? I'd like to write too but I am shockingly bad at it.

SardineQueen · 26/01/2012 13:14

email address [email protected]

this is what I wrote

Dear Attorney General

I have seen a news report on the BBC which I have linked www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-16701076 here.

The case involves a man called Jaimi Watt was convicted of an appalling extreme assault and sexual assault on a 2 year old child. He was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh. He has received a sentence of 6 years for this, and presumably will potentially be released in 3. This attack is so horrific that I simply do not understand why he has received such a light sentence. I cannot believe that he is anything other than very dangerous to children, and he has caused massive injuries and trauma to this toddler, who might well never recover.

I simply do not understand the thought process behind a 6 year sentence in this case. I also cannot comprehend the judges comment that the sentence is "extended". I would have imagined that a crime of this extreme severity would attract a very long sentence, both to punish him for what he has done to this child, and to protect the public.

Please can you look at this case.

Thank you

sardine

SardineQueen · 26/01/2012 13:15

x-posts winter Smile

Probably best to change a few bits to your own words, but feel free to use it.

I am really really shocked by this.

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 26/01/2012 13:16

I feel sick after reading that. That poor, poor baby girl.

Poledra · 26/01/2012 13:23

Can I just ask, is it the Attornet General or the Advocate General for Scotland that we should contact? I will be writing to them and my MP, but want to make sure I get the right person.

That poor little scrap Sad

SardineQueen · 26/01/2012 13:24

Don't tell me I've written to the wrong people.
Sorry chaps.

Still it won't do any harm. I'll have a look poledra, see if I can see if what I have said is wrong or not.

Sorry guys.

Latsia · 26/01/2012 13:24

Done. Emailed.

Latsia · 26/01/2012 13:25

Ah. Scotland. Yes.

SardineQueen · 26/01/2012 13:30

I think this is the website for the advocate general for scotland, but I can't get onto it, it keeps timing out.

Anyone got any other ideas?

I am sorry for the bad info upthread.

LittleTyga · 26/01/2012 13:32

That poor child - wasn't there a case a while ago where there was such a public outcry the sentence was revised and the criminal was given a longer sentence? not sure about the details, but could we get a petition going get the sentence lengthened? Crimes against children always seem to come with light sentences. He would get more for robbing a bank in this country! It needs to change and life should mean life - not the silly 15 years it is now, pathetic :(

(personally I'll have him hung drawn and quartered and dragged by wild horses and thrown to the sharks!)

Panfriedstardust · 26/01/2012 13:33

"Extended" has a specific meaning in England sentencing and it refers to lenghts of time in custody AND the time on licence. Just saying 'extended' is v sloppy reporting.

SardineQueen · 26/01/2012 13:34

It's a direct quote from the judge, panfried. Maybe it means something else in scotland?

LittleWhiteWolf · 26/01/2012 13:35

I am very shocked by this, despite working for the Ministry of Justice and being a firm believer in the way (most of) the justice system works, although I don't have experience of the Scottish legal system or if there are vast differences.

Ordinarily I would suggest writing to your MP as judges have to follow sentencing guidelines set out in parliament, so complaining to them might get sentencing changed to something more appropriate. I'm not sure how it works in Scotland, but surely the same applies?

This case is shockinggoing by the minimum information on the BBC news website this man is a definite risk to others, particularly children and there is no way he will be rehabilitated in 3-6 years, if he even can be changed. I totally agree that he ought to have gotten life in this casethat attack sounded deranged.

Fo0ffyShmo0ffer · 26/01/2012 13:35

Poor poor baby girl. No words.

Panfriedstardust · 26/01/2012 13:40

yes the judge would have passed "an extended sentence" (it has a specific meaning) BUT he would also have described exactly what it was. This reporter seems to have not bothered with reporting it properly. I ahve tried googling it but nothing that I recognise as definite is coming up foro Scotland extended sentences.

ScrambledSmegs · 26/01/2012 13:49

Oh good god. That poor child.

I hope unspeakable things happen to him in prison. If someone can do something that sick, surely they should never be released?

Has there been a consensus on who to email now?

ScrambledSmegs · 26/01/2012 13:54

Right. Quick google has come up with this article in the East Lothian Courier.

The judged ordered that Watt, 24, of Inchview Crescent, should be kept under supervision for a further four years and placed on the sex offenders register.

Pathetic.

SardineQueen · 26/01/2012 14:04

The website for the scottish people is still not loading.

I'm not sure what to do now.
