BREAKING NEWS: P&G win gold on the mumsnet family awards (which they sponsor)

Anyone else a bit cynical about this and think that P&G have basically 'bought' the award. My best friend and husband used to work there (how i met him) and I can guarantee they are anything BUT family friendly to work for!!!

What do you mean sponsored? They won an award which was fantastic, but the awards weren't sponsored at all.

You can see more information on the awards here.

Greythorne · 03/11/2011 17:19

P & G and family friendly cannot ever coexist in the same sentence, FFS. I worked with them (client / agency scenario) and this is risible.

But knowing them as I do, I am not surprised they managed to rig it.

jackstarb · 03/11/2011 18:20

Well done Mumsnet for encouraging family friendly practices.

So, companies get some positive publicity, but the award and this publicity makes them more accountable to customers and staff.

An excellent programme.

iloveberries · 03/11/2011 19:19

yes, the wording is 'We are delighted to partner with Mumsnet on the Family Friendly programme.' So it might not be direct sponsorship but it's fairly easy to read between the lines as to what P&G are getting from this!

jackstarb I agree it's great to recognise those family friendly companies out there (god knows we need more of them!) But it's a bit naive to say it makes them more accountable to staff. The big boys of industries (such as P&G) always find a way to get around things and i completely agree with Greythorne - it is INSANE that they have won this! (though if they've 'partnered' with mumsnet i'm not so surprised Wink agree with you they will elbow their way to whatever they want. my DH is out of there but he was basically forced to work 60 hour weeks there as was my best friend (including when she was PG and told by her boss if she wanted to be considered for promotion alongside the men she couldn't use pregnancy as an excuse to knock off early - early being 5.30pm)

P&G just want to sell stuff to mums, not help those mums (and dads) who work for them....

Hopefully the other 'winners' are better!! I know of some places which are great for mums and dads but mostly public sector orgs....

Do you know anything about P&G, OP? It doesn't sound like it.

iloveberries · 03/11/2011 19:23

maybe we had different experiences with them and mine were just a blip!

OP posts:
MindtheGappp · 03/11/2011 19:27

Have you actually worked for them as a parent?

iloveberries · 03/11/2011 19:31

not me but my DH has and my best friend has

OP posts:
MindtheGappp · 03/11/2011 19:39

What was not family friendly about their experiences? Were they in staff positions?

I can list loads of family friendly features:

Enhanced maternity benefits
Part-time working
Paid paternity leave and leave for adoption
Flexible and spontaneous work from home
Child care breaks for both parents
Three-month sabbatical
Private areas for expressing breastmilk and refrigeration facilities
Teleconferencing to avoid travel
Childcare finding service and emergency childcare
PMI for whole family
Time off for scout/guide camp weeks
Take your child to work days
Pantomime and children's party
Dividend days
Company car includes learner drivers and new drivers
Women in Science support network
Health check ups

How many companies offer these tangible benefits - and the ones that just very quickly spring to mind. I am sure there are more.

No, I'm a teacher. My only family friendly benefits are the holidays.

Yep - I have a very good and real knowledge of the company.

They deserve to win a parent-friendly award. Some of the rhetoric on this thread is quite incredible.

We need to have more concrete knowledge about Iloveberries experience and expectations, and where she thinks she can get a better deal.

Is my list not enough?

HerdOfTinyElephants · 03/11/2011 20:29

Why did the bronze companies only get bronze?

Greythorne · 03/11/2011 20:30

Mindthegapp

I don't have direct experience but I do have a close friend who spent 6 years at P & G and when I worked agency side, my biggest client was P & G.

On paper, they may well offer the benefits you comprehensively list.

I know the realityis utterly different.

These benefits are fairly straight up, grey. Please explain how your experience differed. It is pretty hard to extrapolate from being an agency employee and being a staffer. If you are an agency employee, you are accountable to your agency and not P&G. It is you direct employer who gives enhanced benefits, not your clients.

It is not utterly different in reality. They do what it says on the tin.

Look at the list of parent friendly features that I posted. Which ones are not true?

MindtheGappp · 03/11/2011 20:38

She needs to say where she was expected to work 60 hour weeks. The standard hours are 37.5 hours per week,

Ps. P&G doesn't have that type of HR department. The vast majority of 'HR' is done within the management lines.

Wht is your personal interest in P&G though MTG? I think that's relevant here. ie what point of view are you talking from.

josephinebonaparte · 03/11/2011 20:44

What a pile of wank.
